As chamadas pequenas frutas, como a amora-preta, o mirtilo, a framboesa e o morango, e as espécies nativas, como a pitangueira, o araçazeiro, o butiazeiro, a goiabeira serrana e a uvalheira, dentre outras, podem ser uma opção de cultivo e de retorno financeiro, especialmente em propriedades rurais de base familiar, devido à rusticidade de cultivo, às exigências do mercado consumidor por novas opções de diversificação da dieta alimentar, aliado às propriedades nutricionais dos frutos e ao excelente valor agregado aos produtos obtidos destas frutas. Nestas últimas décadas, devido às mudanças econômicas, sociais e comportamentais, a demanda por frutas tem aumentado, e isso se deve ao fato destas trazerem benefícios à saúde humana, quando ingeridas regularmente; aos sistemas de produção que se adéquam a realidade do produtor; e com cultivares adaptadas aos diferentes biomas, com plantas mais resistentes a novas pragas; frutas com maior vida pós-colheita; além da geração de produtos transformados a partir destas matérias-primas. Isso tudo tem aumentado a pressão por respostas imediatas da pesquisa agropecuária. Neste sentido, a Embrapa Clima Temperado, em Pelotas, RS, em parceria com diversas Instituições de Pesquisa e Ensino, tem ampliado esforços para gerar avanços de conhecimento e disponibilização de tecnologias de forma a subsidiar e orientar tomadas de decisão do setor. Novas cultivares, métodos de propagação, recomendações de manejo de plantas em sistemas de produção integrada e orgânica, nutrição mineral, manejo de pragas, conservação pós-colheita, determinação de compostos antioxidantes e desenvolvimento de novos produtos constituem eixos de atuação de Pesquisa, Desenvolvimento e Inovação. Como forma de apresentar os avanços obtidos nas pesquisas com essas fruteiras nos últimos anos, bem como despertar o interesse nas várias possibilidades de uso das frutas e promover o debate com especialistas nas diversas áreas de pesquisa, a Embrapa Clima Temperado, Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel)/Faculdade de Agronomia Eliseu Maciel (FAEM), Emater-Ascar-RS, com apoio da Fundação de Apoio a Pesquisa Edmundo Gastal (FAPEG), Sociedade Brasileira de Fruticultura (SBF) e Associação dos Engenheiros Agrônomos de Pelotas (AEAPel) realiza o 7º Encontro Sobre Pequenas Frutas e Frutas Nativas do Mercosul, na expectativa de contribuir para o desenvolvimento da fruticultura no Brasil. Nesta edição, estão presentes palestrantes das regiões Sul, Sudeste e Nordeste do Brasil, e conferencistas dos Estados Unidos, Argentina, Espanha, assim como são apresentados 95 trabalhos científicos na forma de pôsteres e oral, nas diversas áreas de pesquisa. Prefácio A Embrapa Clima Temperado, em conjunto a outras entidades parceiras, desenvolve pesquisas com frutíferas de clima temperado a mais de 43 anos. Dentre os principais objetivos da pesquisa estão, desenvolver cultivares mais adaptadas às condições de clima e solo das regiões de produção brasileiras, com alta qualidade de frutos, a partir de sistemas de produção sustentáveis, com respeito ao ambiente e a sociedade. Pesquisa, desenvolvimento e inovação são fatores preponderantes para a inserção e competitividade destas culturas no mercado. Qualidade, rastreabilidade e certificação são caminhos que as pequenas frutas começam a trilhar visando mercados competitivos. As pequenas frutas, como amora-preta, mirtilo e espécies nativas como a pitanga, araçá, goiaba serrana, uvaia e o butiá, entre outras, podem ser opções de cultivo e de geração de renda, em especial, às propriedades rurais de base familiar. Devido à importância do grupo de pequenas frutas e de fruteiras nativas, a Embrapa Clima Temperado realiza o 7º Encontro sobre Pequenas Frutas e Frutas Nativas do Mercosul com a finalidade de divulgar, aos produtores e empresários, técnicos da extensão rural, estudantes de graduação e pós-graduação, pesquisadores e agentes de desenvolvimento, as mais recentes pesquisas e informações produzidas no Brasil e no exterior. Esta publicação reúne os resumos expandidos apresentados durante o 7º Encontro sobre Pequenas Frutas e Frutas Nativas do Mercosul, na forma oral e de pôsteres, os quais estão organizados por área, bem como os resumos das palestras apresentadas no Encontro. Phylogenetic analyses based on 10 chloroplast DNA regions and 22 morphological characters were conducted in order to (i) examine evolutionary relationships within Lithospermum and among related genera of Boraginaceae, and (ii) investigate patterns of morphological evolution. Several morphological features, such as long-funnelform corollas, faucal appendages, reciprocal herkogamy, and evident secondary leaf venation, have evolved multiple times within the genus. In contrast, other morphological features, including the presence of glands and the position and number of pollen pores, are less plastic and tend to characterize larger clades. Some features, including the presence of glands, are interpreted as symplesiomorphic for Lithospermum, while others, such as evident secondary leaf venation, appear to have originated repeatedly. The range of structural diversity that occurs among the species of Lithospermum suggests the potential utility of this genus as a model for integrative studies of evolution, development, and molecular biology. (BORAGINACEAE) AND THE EVOLUTION OF HETEROSTYLY James Isaac Cohen, Ph.D. Cornell University 2010 Lithospermum L. (Boraginaceae) includes ca. 60 species. The genus has a nearly cosmopolitan distribution, being native to all continents except Australia and Antarctica. The center of diversity for the genus is Mexico and the southwestern United States, and approximately three-quarters of the species of Lithospermum are endemic to this region. Lithospermum and the tribe to which it is assigned, Lithospermeae, have been the subject of recent phylogenetic analyses, but these analyses have been limited in their scope. In order to examine critically the phylogenetics of Lithospermum and its relatives, three matrices, each consisting of 67 taxa, were constructed. The molecular matrix includes 10 chloroplast DNA regions, and the morphological matrix is composed of scores for 22 morphological characters. The combined matrix comprises the data from both of these matrices. Analyses of these matrices resolve Lithospermum as non-monophyletic, because members of other New World genera of Lithospermeae are found to be nested among species of Lithospermum.

La Pira 4, I-50121 Firenze, Italy 4 Author for correspondence ( [email protected] ) Communicating Editor: Lena Struwe Abstract— Boraginaceae tribe Trigonotideae comprises a heterogenous assemblage of taxa, many of which have been shown to belong to widely divergent lineages in Boraginaceae in the recent past, with some taxa now assigned to three of the four currently recognized tribes of the Boraginaceae s. s., namely the Cynoglosseae, Echiochileae, and Lithospermeae. The systematics of Moritzia and Thaumatocaryon , the only endemic South American genera of Boraginaceae, have been controversially discussed in the past, and their most recent placement was in Trigonotideae. The present study investigates the phylogenetic relationships of “Trigonotideae” based on micromorphology and molecular data (ITS including 5.8S rRNA, and the trnL-trnF spacer). Molecular data show that “Trigonotideae” are polyphyletic, and none of its mem- bers is at all closely related to Trigonotis itself. Moritzia and Thaumatocaryon are closely allied to each other and are the sister group of the Old World Boragineae. Flowers, pollen, and fruit morphology strongly support this systematic placement.

Barrett 4 , Danny Rojas 5,6 , Juan Arroyo 7 , and Luis Navarro2 PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Populations of heterostylous species are characterized by two or three fl oral morphs with reciprocal positioning of stigmas and anthers. Theoretical models predict equal morph frequencies (isoplethy) when disassortative mating is prevalent in populations, but biased morph ratios may occur when variation in the expression of heterostyly causes deviations from intermorph mating. METHODS: We explore the role of sex-organ deployment in governing morph ratios in two closely related genera of Boraginaceae, exhibiting striking varia- tion in fl oral traits associated with the heterostylous syndrome. We sampled 66 populations of six species of Glandora and 39 populations of three species of Lithodora across their distributional range in the Mediterranean. In each population we estimated morph ratios and measured several fl oral traits. We used phylogenetically corrected and noncorrected regressions to test the hypothesis that diff erences in sex-organ reciprocity and herkogamy are associ- ated with deviations from isoplethy. KEY RESULTS: Biased morph ratios occurred in 24% of populations, particularly in Lithodora . Populations biased for the long-styled morph (L-morph) were more frequent than the short-styled morph (S-morph). Distylous species were less likely to exhibit biased ratios than species with stigma-height dimor- phism. In Lithodora fruticosa , a species lacking reciprocity, decreased herkogamy in the S-morph was associated with increasing L-morph bias, perhaps resulting from self-interference.

COHEN* Texas A&M International University, 5201 University Boulevard, 379D LBVSC, Laredo, TX 78041, USA Received 20 February 2012; revised 15 April 2012; accepted for publication 15 April 2012 The present study comprises an analysis of six different scoring schemes and eight different types of analytic methods aiming to investigate the evolution of a continuous character (i.e. corolla tube length) in Lithospermum L. (Boraginaceae). Corolla tube length in the genus is quite variable, ranging from 1 mm to 75 mm, and the length of the corolla tube has implications for pollination biology, such as longer corolla tubes (> 25 mm in length) being pollinated by hummingbirds or moths. In general, the various methods resolve similar ancestral character states; however, different states are reconstructed at nodes in which the descendants greatly differ in corolla tube length. Additionally, it is suggested that all of the variation of a continuous character should be included in analyses, and this may necessitate multiple analyses with different partitions of the data. The various analyses provide evidence that two maximum parsimony methods, linear parsimony and the TNT method, minimize the number of different rates of evolution. In Lithospermum, six origins of corolla tubes > 20 mm in length are resolved, and these origins occurred at two different times periods: (1) in the shadow of hummingbird diversi- fication in North America (approximately 6–8 Mya) and (2) more recently (approximately 1–1.5 MyA).
