(I’m not sure if this applies for Eudicots; I’m listing them in the same order as APG II.) The first few plants are mostly primitive pond and aquarium plants. Next is Illicium (anise tree) from Austrobaileyales, then the magnoliids (Canellales thru Piperales), then monocots (Acorales through Zingiberales), and finally eudicots (Buxales through Dipsacales). Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. Seed Dispersal by Ants in Jarrah Forest Restorations of Western Australia Troy L. Wanless Introduction The jarrah forests in Western Australia cover approximately 1.75 million ha in the southwestern corner of the state (Figure 1). Jarrah, otherwise known as Eucalyptus marginata, is only one species among many that inhabit a region with considerable physical and biological diversity. 1200 species of plants, 29 mammalian species, 45 reptile species, 17 frog species, 4 fish species and 150 bird species live in this system which also has highly adverse conditions for survival. These may include infertile, often salt-laden soils, drought, and the occasional wildfire (Western Australia Forest Alliance, 2003). Considerable deposits of bauxite, which is the primary material involved in the production of aluminum, are scattered throughout the region. Since 1963, Alcoa of Australia Ltd. has cleared these jarrah forests to make way for mining of this ore. It is estimated that these deposits cover 7-8% of the forested area although only 3-4% will ever be mined due to environmental and economic constraints (Majer, 1989). These mined areas create a scattering of patches throughout the forest that are essentially stripped of any kind of biodiversity that was once there (Figure 2). Restoration efforts on these previously mined patches focus on many aspects of the jarrah forest ecosystem. Specifically interesting is the role that ants play in seed dispersal. This paper will focus on the topic of seed dispersal by ants in the northern jarrah forests of Western Australia while paying particular attention to myrmecochory. Figure 1. Large-flowered Trillium or Common Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum) Large-flowered Trilliums Coming Up in Spring In our childhood the woods in late May were full of hundreds of large, waxy white flowers that covered the forest floor. Grandma in her German diary called these trilliums “wild lilies” and also commented that on May14th and 22nd in 1927 and again on May 22nd in 1940 these flowers were numerous and in full bloom. (Freckman, 1994) gave the earliest blooming dates as April 24th. Large-flowered Trillium Bud Opening Today, with more houses and lawns in the country, and fewer undisturbed woodlots those visions of white are less frequently seen. In addition, the White-tailed Deer population has steadily increased and their appetite for tasty trilliums has served to eliminate many stands of this beautiful plant. This is especially troublesome because once the leaves and flowers are plucked, the plant is likely to die. It can no longer produce food to send down to the roots so that it can come back another year. It still grows quite abundantly on the sloping bank along Billings Avenue in the Town of Medford, Wisconsin. Some sources say that deer do not like to graze on steep banks or inclines so that may be why those plants have escaped. We have a patch of trilliums that has grown larger each year in our lawn. Recently we have had to protect these trilliums from the deer that could wipe out the entire patch in a single night. Sometimes seeds from those plants, possibly transported by ants, have grown into new plants in the front lawn. -

Our work is focused both in the internal relationships among representatives of Omphalodes main subgroups (and including Omphalodes verna, the type species), and their relationships with other Cynoglosseae genera that have been related to the Omphalodes group. Our phylogenetic analysis of ITS and trnL-trnF molecular markers establish close relationships of the American Omphalodes with the genus Mimophytum, and also with Cynoglossum paniculatum and Myosotidium hortensia. The southwestern European annual Omphalodes species form a discrete group deserving taxonomic recognition. We describe two new genera to reduce the paraphyly in the genus Omphalodes, accommodating the European annual species in Iberodes and Cynoglossum paniculatum in Mapuchea. The pollen of the former taxon is described in detail for the first time. Box, 12619, Giza, Egypt. ABSTRACT Echium vulgare which is known as viper's bugloss is a species of flowering plant in the borage family of Boraginaceae. In this study, Echium vulgare was examined considering its phenolic and flavonoid contents, and the antioxidant activity of methanolic extract was investigated by the method called 2, 2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl radical scavenging (DPPH) activity. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was utilized to estimate the phenolic acids and flavonoid compounds. The data reported that the Echium vulgare methanol extract is a good source of total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids content and the antioxidant activity. The phenolic acids from Echium vulgare extract were estimated using HPLC, and the highest compounds were gallic acid, benzoic acid and isoferulic acid. Flavonoid compounds were the highest compounds in quercetrin and naringin. The results of the biological experiments illustrated that the concentrations 250 and 500mg/kg body weight from Echium vulgare had contained the polyphenols in the extract to maintain an ideal body weight, improve the complete blood picture, lipid profile and liver functions as Alanine (ALT) and Aspartate (AST) transaminoferase. -

The entire plant is covered with stiff, white hairs and has a mousy odor. The hairs usually lie flat against the stems and leaves. Leaves are alternate, 3/4 to 4 inches long, and covered with stiff white hairs on both surfaces. The lower leaves are oblong, Mrkvicka by Alexander Photo stalked, and blunt-tipped, whereas the upper leaves are stalkless. Flowers are blue with a yellow throat, resembling forget- me-not flowers but smaller, about 1/8 of an inch across. They appear near the ends of stems in leafy clusters. Each flower pro- duces 4 small nuts with 2 rows of hooked prickles that have star-shaped tips. Fruit stalks are straight and erect. Similar Species Western bluebur (L. occidentalis (S. Wats.) Greene) is a weedy annual plant, native to Alaska, that can be distin- guished from bluebur by its nuts. Western bluebur nuts have 1 row of hooked prickles, while the exotic bluebur nuts have 2 rows. Stick-seed (Hackelia floribunda (Lehm.) I.M. Johnson) is native to British Columbia and resembles Family: Boraginaceae Bluebur both bluebur species, but the fruiting stalk of stick-seed is curved or bent downwards.
