NHESP is responsible for the conservation and protection of hundreds of species that are not hunted, fished, trapped, or commercially harvested in the state. The Program's highest priority is protecting the 176 species of vertebrate and invertebrate animals and 259 species of native plants that are officially listed as Endangered, Threatened or of Special Concern in Massachusetts. Endangered species conservation in Massachusetts depends on you! A major source of funding for the protection of rare and endangered species comes from voluntary donations on state income tax forms. Contributions go to the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Fund, which provides a portion of the operating budget for the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program. Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. For further information, see the references on the last page. Mihail Sadoveanu, nr. 3, 700490–Iaşi, Romania Corresponding author: [email protected] This second part of the paper about the vascular flora of Rarău Massif listed approximately half of the whole number of the species registered by the authors in their field trips or already included in literature on the same area. Other taxa have been added to the initial list of plants, so that, the total number of taxa registered by the authors in Rarău Massif amount to 1443 taxa (1133 species and 310 subspecies, varieties and forms). There was signaled out the alien taxa on the surveyed area (18 species) and those dubious presence of some taxa for the same area (17 species). Also, there were listed all the vascular plants, protected by various laws or regulations, both internal or international, existing in Rarău (i.e. 189 taxa). Finally, there has been assessed the degree of wild flora conservation, using several indicators introduced in literature by Nowak, as they are: conservation indicator (C), threat conservation indicator) (CK), sozophytisation indicator (W), and conservation effectiveness indicator (E). En total se registran 38 especies pertenecientes a ocho géneros, tres de ellas adventicias en Colombia. Cordia diversifolia y Tournefortia glabra se citan por primera vez para Colombia. ABSTRACT A synopsis of the borago family for the department of Santander (Colombia), including keys to genera and species, and information about nomenclature and geographical and altitudinal distribution of the species is presented. Taxonomic observations, remarkable chorological data, vernacular names and known uses for these plants in the departament are also included. In total, 38 species belonging to 8 genera are cited, three of them naturalized in Colombia. -

S. Hitchcock and Paul C. Standley published their succinct manual in 1919 for the identification of the vascular flora in the Washington, DC, area. A comparable new manual has long been needed. As with their work, such a manual should be produced through a collaborative effort of the region’s botanists and other experts. The Annotated Checklist is offered as a first step, in the hope that it will spark and facilitate that effort. In preparing this checklist, Shetler has been responsible for the taxonomy and nomenclature and Orli for the database. We have chosen to distribute the first part in preliminary form, so that it can be used, criticized, and revised while it is current and the second part (Monocotyledons) is still in progress. Additions, corrections, and comments are welcome. We hope that our checklist will stimulate a new wave of fieldwork to check on the current status of the local flora relative to what is reported here. When Part II is finished, the two parts will be combined into a single publication. We also maintain a Web site for the Flora of the Washington-Baltimore Area, and the database can be searched there (http://www.nmnh.si.edu/botany/projects/dcflora). -

It belongs to subgenus Centaurea s. str. (WAGENITZ 1975) which comprises a controversial number of species which inhabit the steppes, forest steppes and mesoxerophytic bushy submediterranean habitats from western Palaearctis. The species is known from only three localities in the entire Transylvania and Romania, which are at the same time the westernmost ones in the range of this species. Here we analyse the three Transylvanian localities of this rare and precious element that needs urgent protective measures. The taxonomic and biogeographic context of the species The place of the subgenus Centaurea s.str. within the genus Centaurea L. and even more largely within the entire tribe of Cardueae was investigated by SUSSANNA – JACAS – SOLTIS - SOLTIS (1995). They have concluded that Centaurea L. can be paraphyletic and that subgenus Centaurea s. str. is a primitive, isolated branch that seems to be more related with other genera like Cheirolophus Cass. Therefore, the unity of the genus should be questioned in the future and a serious revision based upon the phylogenetic relations inferred from genetical, biochemical and morphological studies is further needed.
