Problem: A native shrub of Japan, V. sieboldii has been planted as an ornamental shrub for its flowering effect and screening capability.1 Habit: A deciduous large shrub or small tree with open growth and stiff branches, from 4.5 -6m tall and 3-2.4m wide.1 Leaves: Opposite, simple, elliptic leaves 2-12cm long, leaves have serrated leaf margins, dark green color with pubescent leaf veins and petioles (Fig. 1,2). Crushed leaves emit foul odor. Leaves do not turn a showy color in autumn.1 Stems: Stout with gray, alligator-like bark, prominent len- ticles and leaf scar surrounding entire stem (Fig 3.)1

Fig. 4 Johnny 2007 Flowers: Off-white flowers in flat-topped cymes blooming in late May, 7-15cm across, very showy, covering most of the plant (Fig. 4).1 Fruits/Seeds: Oval drupes in clusters, red maturing to black, ripening in September (Fig. 5).1 Habitat: Prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, well drained soils. Similar Species: Viburnum prunifolium has smooth, hair- less leaves, while Viburnum lentago has winged petioles. Viburnum sieboldii has deeper veins with pubescent hairs on leaf undersides.2
