01:15 Populists in Power – Dunja Hayali Explores a Political Phenomenon Documentary

What happens when populists come to power? Since Donald Trump became US President, he has been making headlines every day. All over the world, populists have been making the running. What do all these populist movements have in common, and how do they differ? And what unites this new international movement? Journalist Dunja Hayali asks what makes the populist brand so appealing to so many – and also what the populists want. Her journey starts in Europe – in France after the recent presidential election. President Emmanuel Macron was able to fight off a challenge from populist Marine Le Pen, but her Front National party plans on creating a new political opposition and is focusing its sights on the elections in 2022. Hayali’s next stop is Hungary which has now experienced more than six years of Viktor Orban's increasingly authoritarian rule. Then she travels across the Atlantic to a United States marking 100 days of Donald Trump’s presidency. Next stop is Venezuela, where the left-wing populist phenomenon of Chavismo still holds sway. Hayali meets opponents and supporters of populism and explores both its short and long-term social impact.

05:15 Princess Diana – The Quiet Revolutionary Documentary

When Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris on 31 August 1997, not only Britain was in shock. Few other figures in history have ever been the subject of such universal adulation as the Princess of Wales. Her legacy lives on to this day, because the friendly way

in which she approached people whatever their background changed the British monarchy forever. For centuries, ceremonial splendor and a tradition of keeping a stiff upper lip had been the main characteristics of the British monarchy. The royal family had grown apart from the people. Then along came Princess Diana and stirred it all up. She lived a life in the public spotlight: not only as a successful ambassador in the campaign against landmines, but also as a woman whose marriage was in trouble, and as the loving mother of two sons. It was a life of glamour and desperation at the same time. With her husband Prince Charles’s affair with his then long-term lover Camilla Parker Bowles, and her own amorous escapades, the paparazzi were never far away. Princess Diana fascinated people with her beauty, her charm and the warm manner with which she approached the sick and the disadvantaged. But the Queen’s relationship with her daughter-in-law was never simple. The two women’s views of the monarchy were just too different. Yet after Diana’s death, the royal family adopted her more modern, open style. Today, 20 years after Diana’s death, the Queen is more popular among her people than ever.

09:15 Life's a Beach – The Best Beaches Around the World Documentary

The soothing sound of the breakers, the laughter of children, the cries of the gulls – perhaps nowhere encapsulates the joys of a summer holiday as much as the beach. We undertake a journey to three of the most famous coastlines across the world to find out how holidaymakers experience the best – and the worst – of their vacations. Beaches are often places of enchantment, but they are also places to do sports and dig sand pits – sometimes they can resemble bedlam. From solitary reflection to beach hockey, from party venue to yoga – to each his own. Many in the US love driving cars all the way down to the waves. Germans often hide behind their books and magazines in their beach- basket chairs. In Israel sun worshippers have to contend with tennis balls flying around. In Korea grilled meats are delivered all the way to the airbed. In Australia you can even find a beach library. In Brazil towels are taboo. This documentary is about life savers, sporty types, treasure hunters and sand architects, jugglers and mermaids – and about regular families who’re after nothing but a bit of relaxation.

23:15 Treasures of the World – Heritage of Mankind Bauhaus – Myth and Misunderstanding, Germany

In 1919, the architect Walter Gropius founded a new kind of school in the German city of Weimar: the Bauhaus. Under its roof, all the arts were to come together, with architecture taking the lead. Craftsmanship and technical skills were seen as the basis of all artistic endeavor. This combination paved the way for industrial design. A number of major artists and educators taught at the Bauhaus: Johannes Itten, Vassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Oskar Schlemmer. In 1925, the Bauhaus moved to Dessau, where Gropius had had new workshops built. The main building, a cube of concrete and glass, became the school's

emblem. In 1933, the Bauhaus was closed down by the National Socialists, and many of the students and teachers went into exile.

03:15 Leonard Bernstein – Larger than Life Documentary

"I cannot live without music," said the gifted conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein. Bernstein’s pioneering musical "West Side Story" turned him into a musical icon and, for 40 years, the music world lay at his feet. Leonard Bernstein was America’s ambassador to the world of music. He was one of the most influential musicians of the last century and inspired an entire generation with his music ensembles and symphony orchestras. An influential teacher, a brilliant conductor, a fine composer and an accomplished pianist. A man, who lived five lives and who exuded passion from every pore. Leonard Bernstein’s music reflects the America of the 20th Century. In the 1940s, he played in jazz combos, learning the music of African Americans and the other ethnic minorities that contribute to the basis of his own compositions, along with the melodies of his Russian and Jewish roots. Yet Bernstein the composer was largely overshadowed by Bernstein the conductor. Within just 25 years, he had shot to the top as an orchestral director. The conflict between conducting and composing was to define his artistic existence until his death. And conflict also played a role in his private life: with his family on the one hand and his numerous alleged affairs on the other. Forever in search of fulfillment, Leonard Bernstein remained a perpetual seeker, eternally skeptical. At the same time, his music made millions of people happy. This portrait by Georg Wübbolt, director of the awardwinning documentaries on Herbert von Karajan and Sir Georg Solti, covers the whole spectrum of Bernstein’s life.

07:15 Dennis and the Dictator – An American Idol on a Peace Mission to North Korea Documentary

US basketball idol Dennis Rodman is a strange guy – and completely uncontrollable. He’s certainly quite different from the all-controlling dictator of North Korea, Kim Jong-Un. But in 2014, both of them agreed to organize a high-level sporting tournament: A basketball match in Pyongyang between North Korean teams and former stars of America's NBA to promote peace between the two countries. Dennis Rodman sees himself as part of a worthy tradition. After all, in the 1970s, American table-tennis players at a tournament in Beijing ushered in the end of the Ice Age between China and the USA. But in Pyongyang, everything goes wrong: the politically naive Rodman, increasingly in thrall to his drinking, embarrasses his own teammates and becomes the target of media attacks back home. It becomes clear that the game will be a birthday gift to the basketball-loving dictator, complete with a serenade to the beloved "Marshal" by the former NBA superstar. Our film shows where naiveté in the face of a repressive regime can lead.

19:15 Dirty Gold War – Documentary

Gold has been one of the most desirable precious metals since time immemorial. There has been plenty of coverage of water shortages and dwindling diamond reserves but the scarcity of gold, the gold rush of recent years and its devastating effects on people and the environment have received much less attention. Our documentary demonstrates the uncomfortable truth about the gold industry and explores how gold could "go green." Our investigative research leads us into the heart of a secretive business; to the leading mining companies and the victims of the industry. On a journey from the Amazon Basin in Brazil to the Andes in Peru, "Dirty Gold War" documents the environmentally destructive effects of gold mining, which is often done with the aid of highly toxic mercury and cyanide. It also addresses the discrepancy between the miserable conditions faced by miners and the massive health risks posed to local residents and the luxury of London or Geneva, where the gold is ultimately sold. It points to the long-standing conflict of interest between an industry that does its best to avoid environmental regulation and activists campaigning for "green" gold. Yet it also raises hope, for major mining companies are slowly rethinking their approach. Some jewelers are demanding ethically sourced gold and new legislation. Nevertheless, ecologically sustainable forms of mining are still a rarity and universally ethical gold remains a pipe dream for now. This documentary shows how we could be more environmentally conscious in our use of global gold resources and demonstrates the need for industry, policy-makers and consumers to change their ways.

02:15 Treasures of the World – Heritage of Mankind Cuzco – City of the Incas, City of the Spanish, Peru

When the Spaniards penetrated the high valleys of the Andes in the 16th century they found a well-ordered state structure already in place. As of 1100 AD the Incas’ insatiable thirst for power coupled with advanced organizational skills had allowed them to build an empire stretching from Colombia to Argentina. The center of power was Cuzco. From here the Sons of the Sun ruled over millions of subjects. From here the royal highways fanned out in four directions across their vast domains. After the capture and murder of the Inca ruler Atahualpa in 1533 the Spaniards took over the immensely rich city and made it a Spanish protectorate. After an abortive Indian uprising the Conquistadors used the stones from Cuzco’s badly damaged temples to erect their own Christian churches on their foundations, making it probably the most Spanish city in South America.

03:15 Germany Decides – A Journey through the Federal Republic Reportage

Germany Decides – the banner under which a team of reporters from Deutsche Welle is driving across the republic this summer and before the country votes for a new parliament in autumn. The reportage aims to chart the country’s mood and answer our international audience’s question: "What really concerns the German voter?" September 24, 2017 sees elections to the 19th German Bundestag. Current incumbent Chancellor Angela Merkel is running for a fourth time, this year against the Social Democrats' candidate Martin Schulz. Many observers feel German society is becoming increasing polarized. Merkel's refugee policy has drawn sustained attack from the right. One party, the "Alternative for Germany" (AfD), has gained significant traction out of it’s anti- islamist stance. Narrowly missing entry into the Bundestag in 2013, will it make it this time? DW journalists Sumi Somaskanda and Nina Haase-Trobridge set off on a journey across the republic. They go to Dresden, city of anti-immigrant rallies, to gauge the strength of right-wing populism. They move on through the Czech Republic to Wegscheid on the German-Austrian border, where thousands of refugees poured into Germany every day in the autumn of 2015. What’s it like in the small border community now? The DW team meets Mayor Josef Lamperstorfer, who expressed his scorn for Germany’s politicians in scathing a letter about the

humanitarian disaster. How welcome are refugees now? How fairly are they treated in Germany? How stable will the German economy be in the future? Nina Haase-Trobridge and Sumi Somaskanda want to find out how the people of this Republic are getting on. They meet young right-wingers, managers, politicians as well as the politically disillusioned. They travel across Germany from Saxony to Bavaria, Baden-Wurttemberg and North Rhine- Westphalia and then back to Berlin via Bremen. Who is going to be running Germany later this year?

09:15 Domestic Servants – Domestic Slaves Documentary

More than 15 million women work as servants in private households in Asia and the Middle East, often in conditions amounting to slavery. About half of them are from the Philippines. Recruited by shady employment agencies, many of them are exploited, mistreated and sexually abused by their employers. An estimated 45 million people are subjected to this modern form of slavery in 167 countries worldwide. In Asia and the Middle East, many of them work as servants in private households. But labor migration is an important economic factor, especially for the Philippines: the money that the women send home to their families provides vital hard currency. Our documentary looks behind the façade of this form of modern slavery and shows how migrant workers in Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia are joining forces to fight for better working conditions.

14:15 The Lives of Cows – Documentary

The ideal cow produces a lot of milk or meat. It’s resistant to diseases and highly suitable for industrial farming. Farmers today can order the perfect cow from a catalogue. But what do these animals look like? And who decides on the evolution of these cows? This documentary looks behind the scenes at a number of breeding businesses. Ten thousand years ago, the European forests were home to huge cattle with massive horns: the aurochs. Then humans started domesticating them and created the cow. Through interbreeding, we have changed these animals over time so that they increasingly meet our needs and wishes. Beef cattle were bred, as were dairy cows such as the Holstein. Milk production tripled in just a few decades. The cow of the future is now created through artificial insemination. The selection a few top-quality breeding bulls guarantees rapid genetic progress. Ever since humans have been breeding animals for food, they’ve used selection to bring about natural genetic mutations. Now the cows’ DNA can be altered directly thanks to gene technology - to produce drugs or ersatz human milk, for example. This documentary takes a critical look at what industrial cattle farming really means for the animals themselves.

01:15 Against the Tide – Bangladesh’s Brave Women Surfers Documentary

Girls in Bangladesh need a lot of courage to surf. Women don’t have the same rights as men in this conservative society. Surfing is something women don’t so, especially in public. Some brave it nonetheless, against all the odds. But when the girls are fourteen at the latest, the families want them to marry. Bangladesh’s young women surfers need more than wind and good waves. Those two things aren’t in short supply in Cox’s Bazar, a small town in the south of the country. Eight girls train at the surf club on one of the longest beaches in the world. They don’t have to pay; the club funds itself from donations. Shaifullah, the coach, says: "We could train thousands of surfers. If some of them are girls, that’s good for our country. Girls also play cricket and football, now they surf." Sumi Akter is thirteen. Her life has changed since she started surfing. "Before I started surfing," she says, "I was timid. But over time I’ve changed." Sumi’s mother wasn’t allowed to go to school, so she wants her daughter’s to do things differently. That means she has to study for school in the evenings. Nasima blossomed when she started surfing. But when she had her child, her surfing days were over - her husband locked her up at home. She’s eighteen now and looks after her son and niece. She mourns for her old life and her lost freedom. The women surfers at Cox’s Bazar know what happened to Nasima, but they still have a vision. "When people say that we can’t achieve anything because we’re girls, we’ll prove to them that the girls in Bangladesh have a lot to offer. Nobody can stop me," Sumi Akter says confidently.

09:15 The Scent of Home – Encounters in Little Hanoi Documentary

The Dong Xuan wholesale market in the Lichtenberg district in Berlin is like a mini-version of Hanoi in Germany. It reeks of coriander, mint and fish sauce, and the food and kitsch stalls are a meeting place for East and West, Germans, immigrants, tourists and locals alike. The Dong Xuan market is where Germany is exotic and different. There we meet people who came from abroad to East or West Germany before the fall of the Wall. It's a place that vibrates with optimism and smells of home – a symbol of those who had to struggle with all their strength and courage to find a place in the new, reunited Germany. One of them is Mai- Phuong Kollath, who came from Vietnam to East Germany as a contract worker in 1981. Another is Suat Bakir, a Turkish businessman. The fall of the Wall moved him deeply, but he also says that German unity was a "wedding to which the immigrants were not invited." Things didn’t work out for everyone. Elisa Dosse was brought to the GDR from Mozambique as a contract worker. After reunification, she stayed in the East German city of Dessau, where neo-Nazis murdered one of her best friends, another Mozambican, in 2000.

19:15 Death in the Philippines – Documentary

In the Philippines, president Rodrigo Duterte has given the police free rein to kill drug users. In a six- month period, more than 7,000 people, suspected or proven addicts, have been killed. "Throw them in the ocean or the quarry. Make it clean. Make sure there are no traces of the bodies” are the shocking, scandalous words of the president himself. Rodrigo Duterte has been sending out death squads since 1989, when he was mayor of Davao in the southern island of Mindanao. After more than 20 years as mayor of Davao, Duterte won the presidential election last year with promises to rid the country of drugs and crime and to kill every drug dealer and user. Duterte, 72, was seen as a strong man, a savior and an antidote to the "narco” state the Philippines had apparently become. Although Davao still has the highest murder rate in the country and the second highest number of rapes, the drug threat has become so deeply entrenched in the Philippine psyche that the mass murder of traffickers and dealers appears almost normal. Most of the operations take place in poor areas. Yet the president appears to have most of the electorate behind him. Human rights organizations are alarmed. While families mourn their dead, the population at large seems to accept Duterte’s policy and the ever-mounting death toll.

21:15 Treasures of the World – Heritage of Mankind The Grand Canyon – A Cross Section of the Ages, United States

Planet Earth may be home to gorges that are deeper and narrower - but none is as spectacular, as awe-inspiring, as fascinating and as famous as the Grand Canyon. Located in northwestern Arizona, the Grand Canyon consists of a 1800-meter-deep gorge, up to 30 kilometers wide in some places. About 450 kilometers long, this tremendous gash in the earth’s crust runs through the wooded Kaibab Plateau. Geologists estimate that the area evolved over the past 40 to 50 million years. To the European colonizers, the canyon for centuries represented an impregnable no-man’s land. Only in 1869 did Major John Wesley Powell finally explore the interior of the ravine on his legendary voyage down the Colorado River. It was Powell who named it "The Grand Canyon." Today, it is one of the most visited places in the United States, attracting some 5 million people every year.

19:15 Insects – Are They the Best Pesticides? Documentary

For years chemical pesticides were considered an efficient way of protecting agriculture. But in the long term they don’t just harm would-be enemies, they also harm people and the environment. Biological pest control is an alternative - who could fight pests more efficiently than their natural predators? Scientists all around the world are studying animals that bring the dream of pesticide-free farming a little bit closer. They include ichneumon wasps, which burrow into the eggs of the snout moths or Asian ladybirds that eat aphids. Targeted breeding and release of insects like these could free affected agricultural land from pests naturally. Meanwhile, an even more environmentally friendly approach is being pursued in India: ecologists want to combat pests by transforming existing agricultural land to provide the pests’ natural predators with good living conditions and so avoid the need to breed them in the first place. Several producers in Brazil and Europe are banking on biological pest control. But, whilst promising, these methods are still hit and miss and need a lot more work.

21:15 Treasures of the World – Heritage of Mankind Alhambra – Moorish Royal Palace, Spain

The seven hundred year occupation of Spain by the Moors ended in 1492. This also meant the end of a 250 year long rule by the Nasrid dynasty in Granada. The elegant Alhambra had been the Sultan’s palace. Its walls, which were built with red clay containing iron, glow in different shades of red depending on the time of day. Everywhere you go in the palace gardens you can hear the refreshing sound of water which comes from the many fountains, canals, pools and ponds. For the inhabitants of the palace, flowing water was a symbol of paradise on earth.

03:15 The Invisible Enemy – Deadly Pathogens and Big Pharma Documentary

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people die due to multi-resistant bacteria – bacteria where many antibiotics are no longer effective. Experts and politicians around the world are warning of an emerging catastrophe: multi-resistant pathogens are currently the greatest danger to modern medicine and threaten millions of lives. And drug manufacturers are contributing to the problem... Many infectious diseases have long been regarded as defeated. But countless antibiotics are now proving ineffective against a growing number of multi-resistant germs. The documentary shows, however, that the manufacturers of the most important drugs are themselves contributing to the development of extremely resistant germs and spreading them globally – so that even their own drugs are no longer effective. The filmmakers went to India, a global producer of pharmaceuticals, to explore claims that practices there are at the heart of the problem. The consequences could affect us all.

When jihadists overran the north of Mali in March 2012, they destroyed numerous mausoleums and burned more than 4,000 ancient manuscripts in the erstwhile university town of Timbuktu. However, a handful of courageous people risked their lives to rescue more than 300,000 manuscripts and hide them at secret locations, saving this unique cultural heritage from oblivion. The Buddha statues in Afghanistan, the ruins of Nimrod, the temple at Palmyra: when Islamists take over, treasures of the world’s cultural heritage that do not fit into their religious-fundamentalist worldview come under grave threat. commonalities. The famous manuscripts of the medieval university town of Timbuktu - testimony to a highly developed culture of scripture and Islamic-African learning - were in serious danger when Islamists occupied northern Mali. But some of Timbuktu’s residents were able to prevent the worst, bringing this world cultural heritage to safety in a historically unique operation supported by UNESCO. Our film combines the story behind the secret salvation of Timbuktu’s manuscripts with hitherto unreleased footage from the time of the jihadi occupation and documents the suffering of the people under Sharia law.

09:15 Mundiya Kepanga – The Voice of the Forest Documentary

Mundiya Kepanga, the leader of Papua New Guinea's Huli tribe, says the trees in the rainforest watch over him like big brothers. He discusses Nature and the jungle in a poetic, humorous and philosophical way. Our documentary accompanies the tribal chieftain on his journeys around the world to save his brothers, the trees.

DW (English) | FRI 2017-09-08 26/95

Like a real child of the rainforest, Mundiya Kepanga, chief of Papua New Guinea’s Huli tribe, was born on a carpet of foliage from a centuries-old fig tree. In the tradition of the storytellers of old, he talks in the first person about his life and the state of the primeval jungle, which he regards as the Earth's ecological sanctuary. Sensitively and poetically, he describes his close relationship with his green home and at the same time reveals the devastating scale of the deforestation, which has accelerated dramatically in recent years. Mundiya Kepanga passes on the prophesies of his ancestors to elucidate the current state of the rainforest and the dramatic consequences of its destruction. His activities as an environmental ambassador takes him from his remote place in the highlands of Papua New Guinea to big international events such as a session in the French Senate, a colloquium at the World Climate Conference and a meeting with actor and activist Robert Redford. The chief also visits schools and forestry workers in southwestern France and represents indigenous peoples exchanges in discussions with ecologists. His reports set out to look behind the alarming statistics and reassess the state of the environment and its importance to human survival. The rainforest generates the air we need to breathe, he says. It is a common heritage of humanity that must be preserved at all costs.

02:30 Universal Basic Income – How an Experiment is Changing People Documentary

Universal basic income is the idea that everybody, regardless of their financial circumstances, should get a wage without having to provide any service in return. It’s been around for decades and is regularly discussed in Europe. Finland was the first country to test the model. Now a private initiative in Berlin is raffling it off as part of an experiment: how do we live when we get it? "It was such a relief, I cried" was Valerie’s reaction to winning the raffle. "It was heaven- sent." She had just given birth to Noé and couldn’t work and her bank account was empty. Then baby Noé won the basic income raffle - its youngest winner. It was a huge opportunity for the young family - 1000 Euros a month for a year with no strings attached. Anyone can participate in the initiative and donate to it, just like a lottery. The aim is to let the winners find out for themselves what it’s like to live on a universal basic income. A film crew accompanied some of the winners for nine months. How does it affect them? How does it change their lives? What can they do with it, what can they do differently? Can they seize opportunities? Valerie fell in love during an internship in Mali and became pregnant. Now she wants to use the year to create job prospects for herself as an interior designer so she’ll be able to take care of her young family.

19:15 Obsessed with Virginity – Documentary

To this day the demonization of female sexuality remains a core element of many Muslim societies. The oppression of women, excessive chauvinism and machismo among men, forced marriages, and "honor killings" are a direct consequence of moral and religious taboos. How do Muslims in Europe come to terms with the free, western societies they live in? What significance does the requirement for virginity have among young people from immigrant families? What does it mean to be Muslim while living in a free society? Are their own expectations and outlooks compatible with their parents’ traditional culture? Filmmaker Güner Yasemin Balci heard some extremely personal responses to these questions while making this documentary. She was born to Turkish immigrants and grew up in the multicultural Berlin district of Neukölln. From an early age she was eager to know why Muslims often deny their children the right to self-determination, and what price the younger generation have to pay to be free. She talks to female activists, women’s rights campaigners and psychologists, who themselves have Muslim roots. All of them have had to fight to be able to live their own lives. It meant breaking away from families and friends due to the women's rejection of moral concepts that make sexuality a crime - and which are still promoted by preachers in many mosques today as they were 900 years ago. These are women who want to educate and change society, with an agenda that is both personal and political.

19:15 The Devil's Horn – Documentary

To many, the saxophone is the instrument of the 20th century. To others, it is a source of evil, a force of seduction that must be suppressed at all costs - "The Devil's Horn". This allegedly wanton instrument was banned by both the Nazis and the communists, forbidden in tsarist Russia and imperial Japan and ultimately condemned by the pope himself. The saxophone can purr gently or roar wildly. It took just a few years for it to conquer the worlds of classical music, showbiz and military bands. What was attractive to composers and arrangers was a red rag to others, who saw it as the devil’s work and sought to ban it. Even in the dream factory of Hollywood in the 1950s, the saxophone was black-listed as "blatantly sexual." It was developed in the mid-19th century by Adolphe Sax, a gifted and obsessive instrument maker with an almost incredible biography, full of setbacks and mortal dangers. Larry Weinstein tells the story of the "Devil's Horn" - often overheard according to mythology - from Adolphe Sax’ workshop through the legendary jazz and bebop eras to the "sanitized" performances of the classical music world. It is a modern-day fairy-tale combining documentary and theatrical elements, with fascinating archive footage and a gripping narrative.

19:15 Runner's High – Kenya’s Marathon Runners in Europe Documentary

To escape poverty, many African athletes train for marathons in Kenya’s mountains. Sports managers bring them to Europe for a season, chasing victories and money. It’s a tough business, a trade in athletes from Africa. A lot of money is at stake - but what price do the marathon runners themselves pay? The pursuit of a better life leads many marathon runners from Africa to the limits of what they’re capable of. For how long does their hope remain stronger than the pain in the battle against their own bodies? Is all this effort financially worthwhile? Long-distance running is among the toughest disciplines in the world. Professional marathon runners battle over seconds in a race more than 40km long - seconds that are often worth huge sums of money. Running has become a business. The prize money for a major event can be in five figures. Participants have to be world-class athletes to win these amounts. Another route is to become a successful manager such as Volker Wagner. He brings people from Africa to Germany for races. If they win, he gets a cut of the prize money. Wagner invented the trade in African athletes in Germany. He has taken Kenyan and Ethiopian runners from the street to the very top. He’s won all major marathons with them: New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin. His athletes have participated in the Olympic Games and set

DW (English) | TUE 2017-09-12 40/95

thirteen world records. He has turned runners like Tegla Loroupe and Joyce Chepchumba into international stars and millionaires. Wagner was at the very top himself, until rival managers recognized his system and perfected it, coming up with more money, bigger sponsors - and a lack of scruples. Wagner hasn’t had any big successes in the past ten years. His best runners are constantly poached by other managers. But he doesn’t want to quit. His new Kenyan running team will, he hopes, produce another international star. It includes 28-year-old Eunice Chelagat Lelay and 25-year-old Felix Kiprotich. They live in small mud huts in the Kenyan Rift Valley, leading a life of poverty at more than 3000m. They’re not just linked to Volker Wagner via a contract, but also through their goal of earning a lot of money so they can change their lives completely. Eunice and Felix are running for a life worth living. Hopefully things will work out for them this season.

21:15 Treasures of the World – Heritage of Mankind Borobudur – Mountain of a Thousand Buddhas, Indonesia

Buddha is omnipresent on Borobudur. It would be no easy task to count his statues here. Hundreds upon hundreds of bas relief panels tell stories from Buddhist scriptures for pilgrims who once came here seeking enlightenment. But to scholars, Borobudur presents many riddles. No one knows precisely what purpose this shrine on the island of Java once served. But even amid the never-ending stream of tourists, Borobudur can still impart a sense of tranquility and contentment to those willing to stay a little longer. Reliefs on four floors tell stories from the life of The Buddha. For the pilgrims, they are entertainment and religious instruction at the same time. Our film explores Borobodur today.

19:15 Centre Pompidou – A Museum with a Difference Documentary

The Centre Pompidou in Paris is considered one of the world’s leading cultural institutions. It opened 40 years ago to astonishment and controversy, caused both by its striking modern architecture and its holistic approach to art and culture. We look at how it has developed since and how its future looks: has it maintained its Utopian élan? The Centre Pompidou in Paris is turning 40. It is a child of the 1968 movement, a Utopia turned reality. It was designed by the architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers on the initiative of the French President of the time, Georges Pompidou, who belied his conservative reputation. This ambitious project aimed to be art and cultural center, museum and creative space all at once, a place where the visual arts, music, film, literature and media studies would all be at home. Right from its opening in 1977, the Centre Pompidou sparked astonishment, curiosity and public enthusiasm with its eye-catching architecture, diverse range of events and avant-garde character. Extensive, spectacular exhibitions seem like three-dimensional journeys on which visitors not only admire the works on show but also find themselves immersed in their own experiences. Soaring flights of poetry take place beside attention-grabbing happenings. The Centre Pompidou provokes and irritates but it never leaves the visitor cold. At the moment, this globally incomparable cultural center is going through a dual crisis: an identity crisis because the Utopia of its beginnings is constantly being cast into doubt and a growth crisis caused by an ever-expanding collection

DW (English) | WED 2017-09-13 43/95

that began with 16,000 works and has now swelled to 100,000. Artists of international renown such as Daniel Buren, Annette Messager and JR, protagonists of the creativity of this unique venue and the people in whose hands the future of the Centre Pompidou lies, describe this revolutionary architectural and cultural jewel from their perspective.

21:15 Treasures of the World – Heritage of Mankind Petäjävesi – Upon these Logs We Built Our Church, Finland

Built in 1763, the small wooden church in Petäjävesi in Finland is a monument to the simple beliefs and the craftsmanship of the people who built it. Ever since it became a World Heritage Site, the church has been used in the summer months for weddings, baptisms and services. Petäjävesi means "Great Pines on the Water” and that name reflects its surroundings in some of the most beautiful lakeland scenery of Central Finland, In the summer of 1763 the local people had been waiting for two years for permission to build a new church. When they failed to receive an answer to their request from the Swedish king they decided to go ahead and build it anyway. The wooden blockhouse construction was completed in just 35 days. Now it is one of the finest examples of Finnish wooden architecture still in existence. The church is laid out in the form of a cross with arms of equal length. With its logical proportions, octagonal domed ceiling and ornate details, the church still fascinates even today. The wood was never painted, neither inside nor out, and has developed an exceptionally fine patina over the past 300 years.

19:15 Molenbeek, Brussels – Belgium’s Lost Generation Documentary

The word "radicalization" does not go down well in Molenbeek, yet there is no avoiding it. After the attacks of fall 2015 in Paris and spring 2016 in Brussels, the need for anti- radicalization efforts has been widely recognized in the area. But the government has not been willing to stump up any money. Street worker Hakim Naji knows the district and its problems. Even those who complete their schooling have little or no prospects: few employers want to hire someone by the name of Mohamed from a place like Molenbeek. The state is little or no help either. It leaves the struggling local schools on their own with their problems and prefers to patrol the streets with heavily-armed military police. While the state seeks to deter rather than integrate, young people are left to the mercy of self-declared Imams in backyard mosques, who recruit them for the war in Syria. More than 500 Belgians have already gone to fight as Jihadists: more than any other nationality in Europe. Many of those who perpetrated the attacks in Brussels and Paris come from Molenbeek, a deprived district in central Brussels home largely to ethnic minorities. Veronique Loute lost her son Sammy to IS. He was one of the first who left Molenbeek to fight in Syria. While her son is dead, her struggle goes on. Along with other parents from the neighborhood, she has formed a self- help group to warn people of the dangers of radicalization. It’s not the only project of its kind. Various initiatives, including music and dance projects, have been launched to get the kids off the streets and improve their confidence and self-esteem. With limited success: Johann

Leman, one of the activists, sums it up: "Anyone who wants to make something of their life has to get out of here." But it’s easier said than done.

02:30 Doctors for Africa – Visiting Ebola Victims Documentary

A mission hospital in Sierra Leone is an unusual destination for a holiday - but not for Fritjof Schmidt-Hoensdorf. He always takes his surgical instruments with him. The orthopaedic specialist doesn’t travel to switch off, he travels to help. He goes there with a group of doctors for two weeks to treat the sick for free. They focus on surgery. Hundreds of patients with terrible injuries await the international team of doctors upon their arrival. These patients haven’t seen a doctor for years. The work in Sierra Leone has become a vocation for Dr Schmidt-Hoensdorf. The orthopaedist has been travelling there for years to volunteer. However, the last time he was there was around three years ago, because after that the country was struck by the ebola epidemic that killed an estimated ten thousand people in this west African country alone. It’s the first time doctors have been back in the country since the outbreak. Ebola almost brought normal life in Sierra Leone to a standstill. Medical care collapsed almost entirely and nothing works without foreign help.

19:15 The Duel – Merkel vs. Schulz Documentary

Germany goes to the polls on 24 September. It’s the fourth time for Chancellor Angela Merkel. This time around, her main rival is SPD leader Martin Schulz. Merkel is on course to beat the record of former chancellor Helmut Kohl, who spent 16 years in office. But could she face defeat at the hands of someone who has spent most of his political career outside Germany in the European Parliament? In January 2016, when Martin Schulz was made chancellor candidate for the SPD, his party seemed to undergo a period of rejuvenation. Almost overnight he became a focus of hope for his party and was hailed accordingly as its savior. Suddenly, young people were taking an interest in politics again and a surge in new membership gave the SPD a new lease on life. The scene was set for a battle royal for the office of the chancellor. Chancellor Merkel remained characteristically calm, projecting an image of statesmanship and reliability - despite ever-louder accusations that she had failed to deal with the refugee crisis. When the Christian Democrats went on to win several regional elections in early 2017, the hype around Schulz seemed to go quiet. At an SPD party congress, Merkel’s rival upped the ante, accusing her of an "asymmetric demobilization" of voters, of depoliticizing the country by saying nothing", even of "attacking democracy." "No big deal" was Merkel’s retort. As the CDU braces to defend Angela Merkel, Martin Schulz is on the attack. But does he stand a chance? The award-winning journalist Stephan Lamby accompanied both Angela Merkel and Martin Schulz for months on end. Now, he presents his portraits of the two candidates.

19:15 Bad Hombres – Trump, the Wall and Immigration Documentary

‘Bad Hombres‘ - evil men, is how US president Donald Trump describes illegal immigrants from Latin America. He wants to expand the barrier along Mexico’s border. Many migrants try their luck all the same, defying the dangers of the desert and neo-Nazi vigilantes. But who are these people whom Trump wants to keep out? The route from South and Central America toward the US is one of the world’s most traveled migration paths. Some try to acquire visas, others risk their lives crossing the desert. They place themselves at the mercy of traffickers in their desperate bid to escape poverty or the violence of drug gangs. Many are abandoned in the wilderness between Mexico and the US and die of thirst before they can ever reach the Promised Land. While aid organizations set up water depots in the desert to try to save lives, self-declared vigilantes with neo-Nazi backgrounds scour the borderlands for illegal immigrants. In the first months of Donald Trump’s presidency, film-maker Stef Biemans traveled the migrants’ route from Guatemala to the US as he sought to find out who are these people that Trump calls ‘Bad Hombres‘?

19:15 By Train across Sri Lanka – Documentary

In the 19th century the British built a railway in what was then their colony of Ceylon. Their idea was to transport goods such as tea from the highlands to the port of Colombo. Today it’s mainly only locals and tourists who use the so-called "Main Line." The route is considered one of the most picturesque in the whole of Asia. Our trip takes us from the capital, Colombo, to Ella in the highlands. Our first stop is one of the country’s largest elephant orphanages. And then on to Kandy, the former capital of the Singhalese kingdom. The city is home to the famous Temple of the Tooth, which is said to house the Buddha’s top left canine. The train then winds its way further up into the highlands. We watch tea pickers at work and go to a tea factory to discover where the aroma comes from. Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka’s highest town at an altitude of almost 1900 meters, where a racecourse still brings the colonial era back to life. The stations have also retained their own colonial charm: in 1901, a signaling system was set up to make the long journey safer. And those suffering from the altitude can catch their breath at the final stop, the spa in Ella.

21:15 Treasures of the World – Heritage of Mankind Roskilde Cathedral – Burial Place of Kings, Denmark

In the 10th Century, when the Danes were still Vikings and feared throughout Europe, their king built the church that eventually became Roskilde Cathedral - one of Denmark’s national monuments. Most of the country’s rulers are buried in the first Gothic brick building, which is the largest church in Scandinavia. Over the centuries, the kings and queens of Denmark added funerary chapels to the original nave: Among others, Queen Margrethe, who also ruled over Norway, Sweden and Iceland, is buried here. Christian IV, a particularly powerful ruler, rests in a correspondingly elaborate crypt. For centuries, Norway rulers built themselves burial chambers here, and every style from Gothic and Renaissance to Baroque and Classic can be found here. In fact, most of them were introduced into the country through the cathedral anyway. Today's rulers are more modest and recent additions are more discrete: it is privilege enough to be buried here. For the descendants of the Vikings, Roskilde Cathedral remains an important national monument.

19:15 Certain Death – 's Resistance to the Nazis Documentary

Resisting Hitler and the Nazis, young Cato Bontjes van Beek may have been a little reckless and careless, but she was also courageous and steadfast. She was executed by the Nazi regime on 5 August 1943. This film portrays the short life of an unusual woman. Born in Fischerhude near Bremen in 1920, Cato was the daughter of dancer Olga Breling and potter Jan Bontjes van Beek. Cato had a carefree childhood. The freedom of this life, her books, the debates in the artists’ house she grew up in all turned her into a confident young woman. Gliding was her biggest passion. In 1938 she moved to Berlin. She enjoyed the city but she also noticed the way it was changing. When the war broke out, she became active. Together with her sister, she helped prisoners of war who were being transported through the city in trains, giving them cigarettes, soap and medications. Then Cato met Libertas Schulze-Boysen. She and her husband Harro were members of a resistance group later known as the Red Orchestra. In the autumn of 1942, Cato and many other members of the Red Orchestra were arrested, tried and sentenced to death. She was beheaded in Berlin’s Plötzensee prison on 5 August 1943.

21:15 Treasures of the World – Heritage of Mankind Galapagos Islands – A Garden of Eden, Ecuador

Strange and forbidding, the volcanoes of the Galápagos Archipelago rise steeply from the depths of the Pacific Ocean about 1000 kilometers west of the South American coast. Together they form 15 main islands and dozens of rocks and islets. This is the where Charles Darwin came in search of the Garden of Eden. Darwin was looking for evidence to support the Biblical story of creation. But he found something far more precious: the flora and fauna of the Galápagos revealed a continuous process of evolution shaped and guided by environmental influences. The Galápagos Archipelago, with its incomparable variety of plants and animals, is in fact a showcase of nature, and as such, has earned its place at the top of UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

19:15 Kenya's Forgotten Children – Documentary

More than 42% of Kenya’s population is under the age of 14. Every child has on average four siblings. Their mothers are often single parents doing their best to feed their children. That’s why they are often on the edge of legality. If they’re caught, the children have no support - they’re on their own, at the mercy of the violence in the slums. Thirteen-year-old Nancy has waited for this moment for a long time: her mother Florence is being released from prison in Nairobi after a six year sentence because of a minor offence. But now that Nancy can at last hug her mother again, she’s scared too. She and her two siblings have spent the last few years living in a relatively protected environment: "The Nest," an emergency hostel for children who’ve effectively been orphaned by circumstance, partly financed by German donations. Nancy didn’t just get a roof over her head there; she also received regular meals and an education. That’s unusual in Kenya, because secondary schools cost money there. This documentary shows how Kenya is trying to break free from the cycle of poverty and violence.

02:30 #FreeDeniz – The Fight for Justice Documentary

The hashtag #FreeDeniz became a clarion call for press freedom within weeks of its creation. The journalist Deniz Yücel, a dual citizen of Turkey and Germany, has been in solitary confinement in Turkey since 14 February 2017. His sister, Ilkay, is campaigning for his release. Her main adversary is President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has described Deniz Yücel as a "terrorist agent" without producing a scrap of evidence. Deniz Yücel is accused of disseminating terrorist propaganda and inciting hatred. The Turkish president apparently regards Yücel as his own personal prisoner. His sister says "he was only doing his job." Her campaign for her brother’s release has included vigils, car convoys, and TV appearances. Although shy by nature, her struggle on her brother’s behalf has brought her international attention. It has also brought her into direct conflict with the powerful Turkish state, which, in response to the failed coup d’état of July 2016, has been gradually eroding democratic freedoms in the name of security. As well as being denied his rights in prison, Deniz Yücel’s chances of a fair trial seem slim, too. The Turkish president has pledged to keep him behind bars as long as he is in office.

Special program: The German Election 2017

15:15 Vote for Me! – The Election Campaign Documentary

It’s back to the ballot box on 24 September when Germany elects the 19th Bundestag. The campaign has begun. Our documentary shows the election campaigns from 1949 to the present day. Interspersed with amusing old spots, former politicians reminisce about the ups and downs of the campaign trail. Which slogan will curry the voter’s favor for the candidate? What do the voters want? It’s been a similar story for Konrad Adenauer, Willy Brandt, Helmut Kohl, Gerhard Schröder or Angela Merkel: the candidates for chancellor and their election promises are part of an elaborate plan, a product that needs to be sold to the electorate. "No experiments", "Vote for Willy ", "Chancellor for Germany" - the slogans reflect the respective mood in (West) Germany at the time. Election campaigns always say something about the hopes and fears of the population. Nowadays, election campaigns are devised by highly paid advertising agencies. They turn social conflicts into questions of personal destiny and systematically build up their candidates as makers and shakers: as winners. A rough tone is nothing new in politics, either. In the run-up to West Germany’s first federal elections, Konrad Adenauer of the CDU and Kurt Schumacher of the SPD traded barbs like "Liar-auer" and "pied piper". In the TV debates of the 1970s, the SPD’s Helmut Schmidt and the CSU’s Franz-Josef Strauß accused each other of deliberately poisoning the political climate ahead of the election. "Vote for Me! The Election Campaign" takes us on a roller-coaster ride through almost 70 years of democracy in Germany - from the scurrilous cartoon reels of the 1950s to Facebook and Twitter of the here and now.

16:30 Whistleblower – Alone against the System Documentary

In the authorities‘ eyes, they are traitors, yet the public at large often sees them as heroes. People are driven to whistleblowing by anger, disbelief and powerlessness. It is a decision from which there is no turning back, a moment when someone obeys their conscience regardless of the consequences. It marks the beginning of a battle against the system in which old allies become enemies. Revelations by whistleblowers such as Swiss Leaks bring tax authorities around the world billions in revenue. They uncover corruption, data abuse and war crimes - without whistleblowers, the world would be a more naive place Behind each story, however, is a personal fate: when the auditor Rudolf Elmer disclosed illegal business methods by Swiss banks, his life turned into a thriller. Stéphanie Gibaud, too, a marketing employee at UBS was first put under massive peer pressure and then fired. This is the price that most whistleblowers have to pay - just like Swen Ennullat, who had the gall to cry foul twice!.

19:15 Gustav Stresemann and the Weimar Republic – The Failure of Germany’s First Democracy Documentary

This historical documentary argues that Germany’s first democracy didn’t have to fail. Gustav Stresemann became chancellor when the young Weimar Republic was plunged into chaos in the year of crises 1923. Even though Germany was still suffering from the consequences of a lost war and the Treaty of Versailles, the republic experienced a period of relative stability until 1929. After Germany had lost the First World War, France and Belgium occupied the Ruhr region to squeeze billions in reparations out of the country and gain control over crucial industries. Inflation reached its peak. Communist rebellions loomed and the radical right demanded a nationalist dictatorship. The old system collapsed when Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated in 1918. Becoming chancellor at a time like that was ‘political suicide’, Stresemann wrote to his wife. The Weimar Republic was Germany’s first attempt at parliamentary democracy. It failed in 1933 when was made chancellor.

19:15 The Cellist Sol Gabetta – "A Piece of My Soul" Documentary

Instinctive certainty, phenomenal bow technique, a velvety tone - the critics are constantly beside themselves with praise. The Argentine cellist Sol Gabetta, who plays around 150 concerts every year, has long been an integral part of the classical concert scene - a portrait of a classical music star, including works by Vivaldi, Elgar, Schumann, Bloch and Shostakovich. Born in Argentina, her scholarships took her to Switzerland via Spain. Her parents and siblings all went with her - they all now live in the Basel area. Sol Gabetta discovered her love for the cello and its beautiful warm sound as a four-year-old. Her older brother Andrés was already playing the violin and so she chose the larger instrument for herself. Since then, she and her cello have been inseparable. Gabetta has a wide repertoire, with baroque and contemporary works as well as the traditional solo repertoire. But it’s not her musical

sensibility as much as her personal charisma that has won her such a devoted following. Her performances invite her audiences to enter her world of ideas and feelings.

21:15 Treasures of the World – Heritage of Mankind Angkor Thom – The Great Temple City, Cambodia

The ancient Khmer city of Angkor Thom is located just two kilometers from the huge temple complex of Angkor Wat in modern-day Cambodia. Nine square kilometers in size, it was once home to more people than any medieval city in Europe. Now it is being eroded by nature and faces complete destruction. Founded by the Khmer ruler Jayavarman VII in 1181, Angkor was the centre of the Khmer kingdom for several centuries. The whole ensemble forms a symbolic miniaturized representation of the universe. With impressive monuments, several different ancient urban plans and large water reservoirs, the site is a unique concentration of features testifying to an exceptional civilization. Over the centuries it was destroyed by warfare and colonialism.

05:15 War and Games – Documentary

Drones aka "unmanned aerial vehicles" are at the vanguard of tomorrow’s military technologies. Their operation via remote control has drawn comparisons with video games. Will this new development bring us safety and security, or bring us closer to the nightmare of a surveillance state? What do the creator of "Call of Duty" and a professor of nano-architecture have in common? Dave Anthony and James Gimzewski are both experimenters. Concrete or virtual, with quadcopters, futuristic weapons or artificial intelligence, they play with human and technical possibilities. How real are their visions of the future? How will the deployment of these new technologies affect our lives and societies? The unmanned assault aircraft of the future are modeled after predators in the animal kingdom. Perfectly functioning machines register the movement of any individual or object - at sea, on land and in the air. And they can kill autonomously. The technology has repercussions not only for our concept of war, but also our concept of ethics and morality. Karin Jurschik was granted permission to film at Israel Aerospace Industries and General Atomics in the US. Her documentary http://www.bildersturm-film.de/krieg_spiele takes viewers on a journey into a disturbing world in which the machines appear, and perhaps are, superior to humans - while we watch in fascination.

19:15 The Poor Rich – Documentary

DW (English) | WED 2017-09-27 85/95

Why do "poor" millionaires need self-help groups? Wealth research is still in its infancy as a discipline. We have much fewer data on "the rich" than on "the poor." How should we measure and define wealth? Do riches and money make you happy? The wealth researcher Thomas Druyen is the only person so far to present a quantitative-scientific survey of wealth and property. Druyen interviewed almost 500 rich people in Germany whose net value averages € 23m per person. Experience in the US has shown that wealth does not necessarily lead to happiness. The first self-help groups for millionaires have formed there as the rich wrestle not just with fears about losing their money but also that society around them is more interested in their cash than in themselves as people. The behavioral economist Hannah Schildberg-Hörisch has investigated the effects of wealth and poverty on personality. Her research suggests that rich people are often more willing to take risks and more open to new experiences. "The Poor Rich" explores the isolated world of the affluent and presents the surprising findings of wealth research.

21:15 Treasures of the World – Heritage of Mankind Stonehenge – A Mystery from the Distant Past, England

Salisbury Plain in southern England is a barren and inhospitable place. 5000 years ago, in the Neolithic Period, it was inhabited by people of whom little is known. But the legacy they and succeeding generations left behind is more than impressive: stone circles and burial mounds of a lost megalithic culture. The most famous of these monuments is Stonehenge. Research has offered insight into the enormous effort that went into the construction of this cult site over generations but little knowledge about its exact purpose. The fascination and mystery remain. Every year on the night of the summer solstice, Stonehenge is returned to a ritual use, when self-styled Druids brandishing thistles and colorful flags celebrate mid-summer night in mystic ways.

19:15 Fighting Back – Women in Egypt Documentary

Despite their involvement in the Arab Spring, Egypt’s women reaped no benefits. Given the advances of Islamism and the entrenchment of the old state they have little or no chance of a self-determined life in terms of politics and sexuality, modernity and tradition. The British- Egyptian journalist Natasha Wheatley embarks on her own personal journey through the land of the Nile. Natasha Wheatley delves deep into Egyptian society, where world collide and disputes over gender roles often divide entire families. In this social climate, people have trouble conducting relationships, while sexual harassment is an aspect of everyday life. To protect themselves, some Egyptian women have set up the platform "HarassMap", where they post reports whenever they are attacked. Hence the map of Cairo features countless big and small red dots that show which districts are especially dangerous for women.

02:30 Absurdistan – India’s Crazy Northeast Documentary

The tribal areas in northeast India, in Nagaland and the other six federal states, are also called the ‘Seven Sisters’. Hardly any tourists go there due to the poor infrastructure and violent conflicts between clans and the government. And yet the region is captivatingly exotic and full of superlatives. The tribal areas in northeast India are full of extremes. The world’s hottest chilli grows there; the world’s rainiest place is there; the region can lay claim to the world’s longest-ever hunger strike and also to the family with the most children. There are bounty hunters as relics of an old macho culture - and the opposite: areas where women are in charge and the men do as they are told. And there’s the country’s largest rhino and tiger reserve, although poachers and the effects of climate change are a threat to both animals. Major problems include mass poverty and widespread human trafficking, particularly of young women. Filmmaker Markus Spieker reports from a region of extremes - sometimes times idyllic, at other times hellish and torn between tradition and modernity.

19:15 Bacterial World – Microbes That Rule Our World Documentary

Bubonic plague, typhoid and tuberculosis: over the course of human history, we’ve fallen victim to countless diseases caused by bacteria. But only around one percent of known bacteria are pathogens. This documentary looks at the microorganisms that live in the bodies of living things - from tiny insects to mammals such as humans. Bacteria are everywhere: in the ground, in the water and in the air. From the tiniest insects to human beings, there’s no creature on earth that’s not populated by bacteria. Scientists are only just starting to understand their complex role. Without bacteria, the human digestive, immune and even reproductive systems wouldn’t work. The human body contains ten times as many bacteria as it does cells of its own. Scientists are only now beginning to understand why. Without these tiny residents, many things wouldn’t work. Bacteria may have played a bigger role in the evolution and development of species than previously thought. Thanks to its symbiotic relationship with bacteria, the bobtail squid, which lives off the coast of Hawaii, is able to light up and defend itself against predators. A marine worm off the coast of Elba can feed itself without having a digestive system, and a species of wasp reproduces alone with the help of bacteria. How great is the invisible power of microbes? A fascinating documentary about the tiniest living things.
