A New Species of Cyphocarcinus and a New Record of Macropodia Formosa Rathbun (Crustacea, Decapoda, Majidae) from Pakistan

ABSTRACT: The present paper includes a new species and a new record of majid crabs. The new species is referable to the genus Cyphocarcinus, subfamily Mithracinae of which only the the genus Micippa was known from the region. Macropodia fonnosa Rathbun is being recorded for the ftrst time from Karachi and belongs to the subfamily Inachinae. Both the species are described and illustrated. The new species is compared with its allied species. KEY WORDS: Majid crabs - Pakistan - new species - mithracine Cyphocarcinus - new record - inachine Macropodia fonnosa. INTRODUCTION SiXteen species of majid crabs were reported from Pakistan by Tirmizi and Kazmi (1988). As a result of the present study three more species belonging to the genera Cyphocarcinus and Macropodia are added to the majid crab fauna of Pakistan. Cyphocarcinus is being reported for the first time from Pakistan waters. Uptill now one mithracine genus Micippa was representing this subfamily from the area under study. Recently a female belonging to Cyphocarcinus was obtained and initially keyed out as C. minutus A. Milne-Edwards. A careful study revealed several differences which could only be confirmed when one slightly smaller male and one juvenile was collected. The material of Cyphocarcinus is being described here as new to science. The specimens of the inachine, Macropodia are incomplete, some essential parts are missing, they are therefore, for the time being assigned to M. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The intensive exploitation of the continental shelf has lead to a search of new fisheries resources in deeper waters. Four seasonal experimental surveys were carried out on the deep-waters of the Eastern Ionian Sea by Greek and Italian commercial trawlers from September 1999 to September 2000.Potential targets included deepwater species of fishes, shrimps and cephalopods. During the 4 cruises, a total of 26 species of cephalopods in 10 families were recorded, including 10 oegopsid squids, 3 myopsid squids, 5 octopods, 2 cuttlefishes and 6 sepiolids. Deep-water trawling resulted in the finding of some uncommon species such as Ancistroteuthis lichtensteini, Ctenopteryx sicula and Galiteuthis armata, which were recorded for the first time in the study area. Extensions of depth range were recorded for several species. The results of multivariate analyses, based on Bray-Curtis similarity indices, showed the presence of two clear associations: one consisting of hauls carried out at depths 300-550 m, where Sepietta oweniana, Todaropsis eblanae and Loligo forbesi are the most abundant species, and another with deeper hauls (up to 770 m depth) dominated by Neorossia caroli, Pteroctopus tetracirrhus and Todarodes sagittatus. -

A list of the marine fishes of the Azores is presented. The list is based on a review of the literature combined with an examination of selected specimens available from collections of Azorean fishes deposited in museums, including the collection of fish at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores (Horta). Personal information collected over several years is also incorporated. The geographic area considered is the Economic Exclusive Zone of the Azores. The list is organised in Classes, Orders and Families according to Nelson (1994). The scientific names are, for the most part, those used in Fishes of the North-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean (FNAM) (Whitehead et al. 1989), and they are organised in alphabetical order within the families. Clofnam numbers (see Hureau & Monod 1979) are included for reference. Information is given if the species is not cited for the Azores in FNAM. Whenever available, vernacular names are presented, both in Portuguese (Azorean names) and in English. Synonyms, misspellings and misidentifications found in the literature in reference to the occurrence of species in the Azores are also quoted. The 460 species listed, belong to 142 families; 12 species are cited for the first time for the Azores. -
Age and Growth of Two Sympatric Squid Loligo Vulgaris and Loligo Forbesi, in Galician Waters (North-West Spain)

Squid were obtained by monthly sampling from the catches of commercial trawling and hand-jigs in Galician waters (north-west Spain) between February 1991 and October 1993. Mantle length (ML) of L. vulgaris ranged from 70 to 480 mm and varied between 70 and 685 mm in L. forbesi. A negative allometry between statolith length and ML or body weight (BW) was found in both species. Sexual dimorphism was apparent in both species, males grew faster and longer than females. The statolith analysis suggests that growth patterns of L. vulgaris and L. forbesi in Galician waters are di¡erent. The exploited population of L. vulgaris was composed of two groups: one formed by individuals hatched in winter^spring and another by specimens hatched in summer^autumn. Squid hatched in winter^spring reached larger sizes at the same age than those hatched in summer^autumn. These two groups were also observed in L. forbesi. However, squid of this species hatched in winter^spring were smaller than those hatched in summer^autumn at the same age. Reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. The life span of L. -

In total, 29 taxa were identified to species or family and 1777 individual food items (1394 bony fishes, 289 cephalopods, 94 crustaceans) were counted. Diaphus spp. and Ceratoscopelus maderensis were the most remark- able ones, as they accounted for 70.45% of the total number of fishes. Onychoteuthis banksii, on the other hand, was the only cephalopod species found in all stomach content analyses and represented 38.06% of the total number of cephalopods. Bony fish species: Myctophum punctatum, Notoscopelus elongatus, Electrona risso, Sudis hyalina, Moridae sp., Phycidae sp., Sternoptychidae sp. and cephalopods: Pterygioteuthis giardi and Chtenopteryx sicula were reported the first time in the stomach contents of striped dolphin in the Mediterranean Sea.
