Bishop’s Letter

As I sit down to write my letter to you, I do so in the same week that many of our clergy and readers have been preparing to preach on the anointing of Jesus at Bethany. It’s a familiar story from the gospel of John, which tells of Mary taking a jar of expensive perfume and, in a moment of seemingly reckless extravagance, pouring the sweet-smelling perfume over the feet of Jesus before wiping it away with her hair. This apparent waste horrifies Judas Iscariot, who will go on to betray Jesus and hand him over to the Jewish police, and ultimately to the occupying Roman Army to be crucified. It is a poignant and powerful story of human love and generosity, jealousy and betrayal. I encourage you to reach for your bible and read the story again for yourself, because it is also a wonderful illustration of the generous and extravagant God whom you and I profess, and whose love is most perfectly expressed for us in the death and resurrection of Jesus, which we celebrate at Easter. In her care for Jesus, Mary’s actions speak of love and generosity, of honouring Jesus. By contrast, Judas is consumed by jealousy, spite and, ultimately, betrayal. The irony is that both Mary and Judas are needed in our story: Mary’s extravagance points to the overflowing generosity of God, which we see most profoundly in the death and resurrection of Jesus; it is Judas’ betrayal of Jesus that leads to Jesus’ death, making the resurrection possible. Then, as now, we find the best and the worst of humanity existing side by side. In this, the story mirrors the reality of life as you and I live it today. However, the message of the resurrection is that goodness is stronger than evil; love is stronger than hate; light is stronger than darkness; life is stronger than death. The challenge for all of us is to hold fast to the values of love and compassion, generosity and service, particularly when the prevailing culture around us makes it hard to do so, and jealousy and spite, hatred and betrayal can seem to have the upper hand. I wish you a blessed and a happy Easter. +Christopher Lincoln

6 Eastville Churchyard

Eastville Churchyard has been returned to the Parish. “Where did it go” you might ask. The Church Commissioners have been in control of it whilst the Church was being closed and demolished. The footprint of the Church has been preserved, and there is an information board in place explaining the site. Our photographs show Alan Guthrie Jones from the Church Commissioners handing the site back to Elaine Harrison and Vicky Waltham representing the Parish on a beautifully sunny day in the middle of February.

Please pray for our new Archdeacon (from Easter Sunday).

The is pleased to announce the appointment of the Revd Gavin Kirk, Precentor of Lincoln, as .

Gavin (54) spent much of his early childhood in Lincolnshire, and was educated here before attending the University of Durham, and then training for ordained ministry at Chichester Theological College. He holds a Master’s degree from Heythrop College, . After ordination, Gavin served in the dioceses of Chichester, Rochester and Portsmouth before becoming Precentor of Lincoln 13 years ago.

The appointment follows a rigorous selection process from a broad field of candidates, with an interview panel that included a rural dean from the diocese, the interim Archdeacon of Lincoln, and a serving archdeacon from a neighbouring diocese.

The Bishop of Lincoln, the Rt Revd , said: “I was delighted to be able to appoint a candidate drawn from our own existing cohort of clergy in the Diocese of Lincoln. I look forward to welcoming Canon Kirk to the senior staff team, and to the huge contribution of wisdom and experience that he will bring as we continue to build the work of the diocese in ministry and mission.”

On taking up the post as Archdeacon of Lincoln after Easter 2016, Canon Kirk will have particular responsibility for clergy recruitment, discipline and certain legal functions related to parishes in the Archdeaconry of Lincoln.

Many thanks to Ven Geoff Arrand for all his support as our interim Archdeacon.

9 Prayers for Peace

Compassionate God and Father of all, we are horrified at violence in so many parts of the world. It seems that none are safe, and some are terrified. Hold back the hands that kill and maim; turn around the hearts that hate. Grant instead your strong Spirit of Peace - peace that passes our understanding but changes lives, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

A prayer for peace in our world Make your ways known upon earth, Lord God, your saving power among all peoples. Renew your Church in holiness and help us to serve you with joy. Guide the leaders of all nations, that justice may prevail throughout the world. Let not the needy be forgotten, nor the hope of the poor be taken away. Make us instruments of your peace and let your glory be over all the earth. Amen

For the peace of the world

Almighty God, from whom all thought of truth and peace proceed: kindle, we pray, in the hearts of all, the true love of peace and guide with your pure and peaceable wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth that in tranquility your kingdom may go forward, till the earth be filled with your knowledge of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

10 A prayer for peace in our communities Gracious God, We pray for peace in our communities this day. We commit to you all who work for peace and an end to tensions, And those who work to uphold law and justice. We pray for an end to fear, For comfort and support to those who suffer. For calm in our streets and cities, That people may go about their lives in safety and peace. In your mercy, hear our prayers, now and always. Amen

For peace and justice

God our deliverer, defender of the poor and needy; when the foundations of the earth are shaking, give strength to your people to uphold justice and fight all wrong, in the name of your son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. David Stancliffe (1942-)

Prayer for Peace Most gracious God and Father, in whose will is our peace: turn our hearts and the hearts of all to yourself, that by the power of your Spirit the peace which is founded on righteousness may be established throughout the whole world; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

11 Rev’d Fran’s Bit

I am reading a book at the moment by Craig Blomberg called: Contagious Holiness. I wonder what you make of that title. When I picked it up off the shelf, I imagined it to be a practical tome about living in such a Christian way that people notice a difference and respond. But the subtitle of the book reveals something quite different: Contagious Holiness - Jesus’ meals with sinners.

On the back cover (where else do you go for an explanation?) it says: “One of humanity’s most basic and common practices – eating meals – was transformed by Jesus into an occasion of divine encounter. In sharing food and drink with his companions, he invited them to share in the grace of God. His redemptive mission was revealed in his eating with sinners, repentant and unrepentant alike.”

That has got me thinking! How often do we use meals, or ‘table fellowship’ to connect with our neighbours. We are accustomed, perhaps, to going out with a group of friends – and there is nothing wrong with that, but how about popping next door to where you live and inviting them round for a coffee or a meal? The first steps are always the most difficult, but we could all give it a go.

Or if that is too much, pop along to your local Church coffee morning and get chatting – then invite them back to yours on another day for another chat. That is sharing in the grace of God – and it uplifts both the giver and the receiver. Even Jesus knew “It’s good to talk”.

St James’ Church, Spilsby Winter Quiz

Again, many thanks to all who took part. We raised £80 in profit towards funds. We were generous in our marking as some of you had different answers to ours but we only accepted suitable answers that we could verify online and where the same initial letters occurred we accepted transposed answers but not where answers were duplicated, as well as accepting the first answer only where alternatives were listed to be as fair as we could to all.

There was one clear winner of the £20 prize with 100 correct answers: Mrs Lynnie Porter from Tring. The £5 Lucky Dip winners were Mrs Cammack, Spilsby and Mrs Giffard, Swansea, drawn by Rev’d Joan Thornett. Congratulations to all our winners.

**We will be producing a new quiz in July. Many thanks again from Jane and Maria**

Hope Springs Eternal

Looking about the garden it is wonderful to see the new buds on some of the plants, shoots breaking through the soil and some of the plants I thought were dead are definitely showing signs of growth, of new life. The daffodils in our gardens and along the hedgerows make us all the more cheerful. This is the season of hope.

It is an immense privilege each year to be able to attend church on Easter morning and share the real Joy of celebrating our Risen Lord. We are able to celebrate the fact that we are an Easter People. It can be too easy to focus on the negative and be scared of change and new things but we are a resurrection people called to be positive and place our faith in Christ, who was dead but is now alive; let’s face it things do not get more positive than that.

In this season of Eastertide it is a time to rejoice and celebrate our Risen Lord. Lent has now passed, the time of abstinence has gone, now is the time to take up new ventures, new opportunities. In this season we should be Joyful and Confident about all that the Lord has planned for us, individually and as a church. It is a time of planting, not only in our gardens but in planting new seeds of faith in our villages with family, friends and neighbours and those we meet as we travel through life.

Some of us attended the Discipleship Development Plan course that was run in the Group, and is now being run in part of the Deanery at the moment. It was a time to really look at where we are as a group and what would we like to happen in the future. It allowed time to stand back and really assess things and see what could be done in the future. It may have been sobering but the disciples must have had to stand back and take stock after all they had experienced. First there was Good Friday but then came Easter Morning and they were to witness the Risen Christ in their life.

We too can share our stories of our faith and our experiences and help our churches to grow, to share with each other the love and the resurrection power of God in our lives and in our communities. Let us be willing to sow seeds of hope so that those we meet may also meet with Christ.

Easter Blessings

Teresa

14 FAMILY SERVICE

Reverend Joan Thornett was “pretty in pink” at the Mothering Sunday service on March 4th at St James Church. Joan was wearing a pink stole which may be worn on the second Sunday in Advent and the fourth Sunday in Lent.

The letters of the word MOTHER were given to the children and they were asked, with the help of the congregation, how many two, three, four and five letter words they could make. There were about 22 words which showed what a versatile word it is, just like versatile Mothers. (This is not to say that Dads are not versatile too).

Later in the service Reverend Joan showed things that reminded her of her Mother. Stout shoes reminded her of her Mother trekking across the fields and compared them to the sandals that Jesus wore as he walked spreading the Gospel; a saucepan reminded her of the good food she received from her Mother comparing it to the food Jesus fed to his followers feeding body, mind and spirit; a book of stories of Jesus told to her by her Mother compared to the stories Jesus told; a first aid kit used to help heal cuts and her Mother kissing hurts better compared to the healing powers of Jesus. Mothers may reflect the life of Jesus in what they do and thanks were given for people who have a Mothering role in the work they do and for the Mothering role of the Church.

Rupert Parsons was crucifer and Rachel and Martha were acolytes. Linda Taylor read the Song of Anselm and John Hobson read from Paul's letter to the Colossians.

The children made cards and coloured spring pictures for the craft activity. Everyone was given a book mark to celebrate Mothering Sunday.

If you would like to meet a bear....Yes a bear....please join us at the next Family Service on April 3rd at 10.00am

17 ERESBY HALL NEWS

The Craft Club brought a sense of spring into the upstairs lounge with their picture of lambs, snowdrops and daffodils. Brenda, Terry, Connie and George enjoyed the activity.

Another attractive feature upstairs is the old fashioned cart which carries fruit and snacks so the residents can help themselves when they feel peckish.

Large, colourful circles also adorn the walls expressing the mission statements for the Orders of St John Care Trust which are: Respecting each other; Empowering individuals; Dedicated to caring; Securing our future and Promoting communities.

Easter was a busy time for the residents. March 25th was egg rolling in the car park; March 27th a singer entertained the residents and March 28th was the Mad Hatters tea party. Easter hats were created before this event.

March 14th - 20th was Nutrition and Hydration week when the home thought about the food they eat and encouraging residents to drink more especially when the weather warms up.

The Zoo Lab had to cancel their visit and will now be bringing in extra-large insects on April 1st (No it's not an April Fool joke).

Two very important birthdays will be celebrated in April. Ivy George will be 100 on April 10th and Phyllda Upex will be 102 on April 26th. Happy Birthday and Best Wishes to both of them.
