Chairman’s Chatter Good afternoon and welcome to the Trevor Brown Memorial Ground for this fixture vs Leicester Road. I extend a warm Paget welcome to the players, supporters and directors of Leicester Road who have made the journey here from Hinckley. This is Leicester Road's first away game of the season after their acceptance into the league following an FA appeal resulting from the demise of Hinckley United. Over the years Paget enjoyed many great games against Hinckley United, Hinckley Athletic and Hinckley Town and hopefully today's match will be befitting of the occasion.

Our start of the season has not been what we would've hoped for, however with the massive turn over of players since the summer and the inevitable work and holiday commitments of players during August, we certainly haven't disgraced ourselves at this new level. I do feel we are only a few small steps away from clicking and finding our rhythm which will provide the platform for a successful season and hopefully we can get the all important three points today. The spirit in our dressing room is very high and we have a committed group of players who are determined to push the club to the next level with the support of our excellent coaches and dedicated football committee.

Following today's match we travel to Inkberrow in the Les James Challenge Cup on Saturday 6th September which has been dedicated as this season's annual non league day. It would be great to see as many supporters at Inkberrow to help cheer us onto victory. Our support really can be our twelfth man and can provide us with the platform to progress the club further.

Our next 'home' match will be on Wednesday 24th September when we will play AFA side Village FC (7:15pm kick off) here at the Trevor Brown Memorial Ground in the H S Smith Shield. This competition comes from our time in the Birmingham AFA and hopefully will see us collect our first silverware of the season.

I hope to be in a position to announce our first fundraising event of the season in our next programme, with what will be the first of two sporting dinners we will host this season. Until then, let's unite together as a club and roar the Bears on as we look to secure a vital 3 points. Come on you Bears!

COME ON YOU BEARS!

Welcome today’s opponents: LEICESTER ROAD FC After Hinckley United folded in 2013, their floodlit team continued in the Midland Floodlit Youth League (MFYL) under the name Hinckley United, playing at Leicester Road stadium, winning the MFYL. At this time the supporters of Hinckley United, disenchanted with the Hinckley United FC owners running of club affairs established a phoenix club, AFC Hinckley, who play at Heather St John. AFC Hinckley were placed at Step 6 viewed, at that time, as the phoenix club of the folded Hinckley United FC. Hinckley United’s youth section then sought to enter adult football and appealed that they were the true continuation of Hinckley United FC and that AFC Hinckley were in fact a new club. This appeal went to . During this time Hinckley United FC’s floodlit team was rebranded as Leicester Road FC. After a successful appeal Leicester Road FC was placed at step 7 of the non-league pyramid replacing the demised Phoenix United (the 4th club from Vale Stadium to fold).

Match Report: Midland Football League Division 2. Monday August 25th 2014 Paget Rangers 0 Feckenham 1

Paget slipped to their fourth defeat of the season following a narrow defeat at the hands of Feckenham at a rain soaked Trevor Brown Memorial Ground. Due to injury and unavailability the Paget side showed 6 changes to the team defeated narrowly on Saturday in the President’s Cup. Most of the early action in the first half was confined to midfield. Paget’s first chance came when Reid and Fagg combined well and then a Feckenham attack was cleared by Bond after good work by Adams and Connolly. Hicks then fired wide of the Paget goal and Marston missed with a header as Feckenham threatened. Paget then earned a free-kick on the edge of the Feckenham box but Ashfall shot straight at Cox in the Feckenham goal. Bond was forced to clear a Feckenham free-kick after a foul by Bennett who then conceded a corner which was dealt with easily by the Paget defence. Following a foul on Fagg, Morris whipped in a dangerous free-kick that Feckenham cleared eventually. The busy Fagg then forced Cox into a good save and Cullen had a cross-shot which Feckenham cleared for a corner. In the next Feckenham attack Hicks evaded a tackle by Bennett before firing in a powerful shot that was cleared by Barnes. Just before half-time Morris’s cross-shot was followed up by Reid whose shot was eventually cleared by the Feckenham defence.

Half-time Paget Rangers 0 Feckenham 0

The second half opened in dramatic fashion as Feckenham scored from the first attack. Byford played in Hicks who noticed Maguire coming off his line and skilfully lobbed the ball over the onrushing ‘keeper into the empty Paget net. Maguire was then injured punching away a cross as the visitors threatened to increase their lead. As Paget sought an equaliser Bennett tried a shot from distance that skidded on the wet surface but Cox made the save. Hicks and Byford then forced Maguire into a double save as Feckenham pressed forward for a second goal. Paget brought on Bradley for Reid and he was soon in action but his cross came to nothing. In a Feckenham counter-attack Maguire had to race from his goal to stop Connolly. Feckenham’s White was then penalised for handball but Bennett’s free-kick went straight to the Feckenham ‘keeper. Paget then brought on Kurt White for Ashfall and he shot just wide following more good work by Fagg. After a linesman had had to receive treatment Paget missed a good chance to equalise when Bradley’s shot and White’s follow up were saved at point bank range by Cox. Cox then had to save from Cullen and Morris blasted a shot over the bar after Fagg had been fouled. Paget continued to press for the equaliser and White’s cross caused panic in the Feckenham defence who eventually cleared the ball for a Paget corner. Despite another dangerous cross from Bradley and more pressure from Paget the Feckenham defence held firm to record their third straight away win without conceding a goal. Paget can take heart from a determined performance and look forward to players becoming available and returning from injury. All the defeats have only been by a single goal and hopefully that elusive first win is not far away. four Full-time Paget Rangers 0 Feckenham 1 04 PAGET v Leicester Road:Layout 1 19/11/2014 07:40 Page 7

Manager’s Notes

The opening start to the season has been a challenge to say the least. It would be easy if the results told the story but they don't. Injuries and unavailability of key players have played a part and caused some selection headaches and I can say that the only time this season we have had the pick of the squad was against local rivals Sutton. We have a team that will step up to the plate and deliver but as they say "Time waits for no man" nor players. I hope that we have the main contingency of the squad available back for selection this afternoon and we can give our visitors Leicester Road a game. Players to look out for coming through the youth ranks at Rangers, if selected, are Reece Jacobs and Aaron- Martin Asante. Both have previously been at local academies and have a tremendous amount to offer to Paget in the future. Looking at the midweek games you can never predict the outcome 100 percent but I hear 4 Sky Bet punters had money on MK Dons to win 4-0 .Now that's a bet I would have liked to have had on. Instead I was being entertained at WBA by the Chairman and managed not to fall asleep into my Cordon Bleu meal. Let's hope for a more entertaining game this afternoon! Simon Says… Hot on the heels of Bank Holidays match in the rain against Feckenham we now face Leicester Road from Hinckley for today’s game here at home. After last Mondays game which saw a number of players out due to injury and other reasons we find ourselves hoping that the manager is able to bring in maybe one or two new plays for the areas that need strengthening. With this in mind I can confirm that negotiations with Angel Di Maria broke down as he opted to speak to a pub team in Manchester by the name of Manchester United. Paget manager stated he was disappointed with the player preferring to pick up an alleged £120k per week for a pub side rather than picking u trophies here with Paget, still one players loss is another's gain and new player will I'm sure be brought in. If you are a football fan who follows football in the Women's game might be surprised to know that even if a team is linked with their men's professional club some of the players are having to buy their own training equipment for use not just in their own training sessions away from club sessions but in club sessions. Can you imagine if the likes of Petr Cech or David De Gea had to buy their own gloves, there would be an uproar in the footballing world. Yet this is what female players have to put up with that are hidden from fans. It will be a long time I think before the players in the women's game receive the same support as their male counterparts. Much has been said of Shelly Kerr becoming the first manager of a men's side in Scotland after she took control of Stirling University. I'm staggered why there has to be such shock that a woman manages a men's team. Surely if a coach is good enough for any team then that's all that matters. Julian Dicks one time West Ham player is a manager in the women's game yet like many managers in the women's game who are men that is not seen as being newsworthy, somehow this difference has to be addressed as like when the Rugby team won the Women's World Cup a couple of weeks ago how many before the result came on the news even knew of the World Cup taking place. As someone who actively watches all sport it drives me mad that there is next to no reports or even results in the daily newspapers yet the media jumps on the bandwagon for a week or too when they win a competition. This interest should be there all the time. In the managerial world, the world of football has been once again hit by scandals of alleged sexism, racism and homophobia. If these allegations are true then it is shocking and those involved should in my view never be involved with football again. Enjoy the game. Paget Rangers in the 1994-95 Midland Alliance – part 4. Paget were still smarting from their FA Cup exit at Moor Green when Town came to Coles Lane on Saturday 15th October for a Midland Alliance fixture. Shifnal had joined the Midland Alliance from the Midland Combination where they had finished third in the 1993-94 season. They were to complete 9 seasons in the Alliance before being relegated back to the Midland Combination in 2003. After three seasons they switched to the West Midlands League, which they won at the first attempt, thereby securing promotion back to the Alliance. After three seasons they were relegated back to the West Midlands League. Despite a Derek Christopher goal after only 11 minutes, Paget were held to a draw by their opponents in front of 115 spectators.

The following Wednesday Bolehall Swifts returned to Coles Lane, this time for a Birmingham Senior Cup tie. The 3-1 scoreline recorded in August’s league match was repeated but only after Paget had had to come from a goal behind. A ninth minute Mo Powis goal had given the Swifts an early lead which they held until the 72nd minute when Gary Edmonds equalised. Further goals from Trevor Burroughs in the 75th minute and Ian Paul in the 82nd minute secured Paget’s passage into the next round. On Saturday October 22nd Paget entertained West Midlands Police in a Midland Alliance League Cup (sponsored by Industrial Rewind) tie. Paget won 1-0 and the winning goal, the 38th minute, came when the unfortunate Police defender Gary Ingram, turned a Scott cross into his own net. Paget had found the Police goalkeeper Martin Crompton in brilliant form. The Police had been lacking in goals and found the Paget defence in a determined mood, lead well by the excellent Stuart Tucker. Due to the ground share arrangements with then landlords Sutton Town, Paget’s FA Vase tie against Barwell had to be played on Friday night. The newspaper report suggested that this did not suit Paget as “an inept performance, with a number of players suffering a loss of form at the same time, proved costly for Paget Rangers, as they were bundled out of the FA Vase by a determined Barwell side by 3 goals to 2”. Paget had created two good chances before falling behind in the 23rd minute when a cross-field pass by Robinson stretched the Paget defence and Hopewell crossed low for Potts to score. Paget equalised six minutes later. Perry Mulvey moved forward to set up Venroy Scott who fired home. Despite being boosted by the goal, Paget fell behind again six minutes into the second half, when Potts punished their inability to clear the ball, placing his shot wide of Paget ’keeper Gary Price. Paget had a couple of good opportunities to equalise for a second time before Alan Hunt shot home from the edge of the area in the 83rd minute to send the tie into extra-time. Barwell took the lead for the third time in the 97th minute when Potts completed his hat-trick with a simple chance after a slip by Tucker. Paget couldn’t find a third equaliser and Barwell substitute Andy Lucas had opportunities to stretch the visitors’ lead. This meant that Barwell were the first team in the country to secure their place in the next round. To repeat the theme of Paget’s defeats coming in pairs, following the Halesowen Harriers and Moor Green defeats earlier in October, Paget slumped to another home league defeat on Saturday 5th November. Shepshed Dynamo came to Coles Lane and exacted a measure of revenge for their 6-1 home thumping back in August, when they beat Paget by two goals to nil. A crowd of 132 saw Shepshed take a 10th minute lead through their leading scorer Lee McGlinchey. Midfielder John Cheetham doubled Shepshed’s lead in the 38th minute. Thanks to an excellent defence marshalled by Paul Smalley, Paget’s forwards were unable to score and Shepshed held on for the win. Paget’s league progress was halted further on November 12th when the league match at Chasetown was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at the Scholars. In the next programme we’ll look at progress in the Staffordshire Senior Cup and Paget’s visit to one of the Midland Alliance’s more remarkable grounds. nine 04 PAGET v Leicester Road:Layout 1 19/11/2014 07:40 Page 12

League round up

The Midland Football League in the F.A. Cup. In the Premier Division Basford United continue to set the pace. Although they lost their 100% record following a 1-1 Bank Holiday Monday draw against neighbours Long Eaton United, they remain 3 points clear at the top. In front of Basford’s season best crowd of 115, Long Eaton took the lead on 34 minutes when Fell glanced home a cross. Basford equalised on 79 minutes when Hendrie set up Wiggins-Thomas to score. Coleshill Town have moved into second place as they recovered from a surprise home defeat to newly promoted Lye Town last Saturday, by beating Boldmere St. Michaels 3-0. Alvechurch are third after a 1-0 win at Westfields. Other Bank Holiday Monday winners were Causeway United, Continental Star, Coventry Sphinx, Dunkirk and Quorn. AFC Wulfrunians held Brocton to a 2-2 at Silkmore Lane whilst there was also a stalemate at Walshes Meadow as the match between Stourport Swifts and Wood finished 1-1. The basement battle between Rocester and Heath Hayes also finished 1-1. This means Brocton slip to the foot of the table as Heath Hayes have a superior goal difference. In Division 1 Coventry Copsewood top the table on goal difference from Highgate United despite losing 2-0 at Southam United on Bank Holiday Monday. Goals from Bridges and Jones ended Copsewood’s unbeaten start to the league season. Highgate were unable to take full advantage as they were held to a 1-1 draw at 4th placed Cadbury Athletic. Lei Brown netted for Highgate while Gitting scored the Cadbury goal. Littleton are third following their comprehensive 5-2 win at Studley. beat Stafford 3-1 and Lichfield beat Alvis Sporting Club 3-0 to move into 5th and 6th places respectively. In the evening kick-off Bolehall Swifts beat Griff 2-1. Tyler Brownless and an own goal secured the points for the Swifts in front of 60 spectators. Villa remain bottom of the table after a 7-0 defeat by Town. This means that Villa have yet to score a league goal and have a goal difference of -29 after just 5 matches. Aston continue to lead Division 2 after a 2-2 draw away at Knowle. Haughton and Roberts scored for Aston whilst Oakley and Craine netted for Knowle. Barnt Green Spartak are now second following a 4-1 win away at third placed Fairfield Villa. Sutton United’s 3-0 win at Chelmsley Town puts them fourth ahead of Paget’s conquerors Feckenham on goal difference.
