The match will be the 91st time the Shield has been contested. The only match ever to go to a replay was the very first - in 1908. No club has a Shield pedigree like Manchester United. They were its first winners and have now clocked up a record 15 successes. They have shared the Shield an additional four times and have featured in a total of 28 contests. Wigan Athletic, by contrast, were a non-League club until 1978 and are playing the first Shield match in their 81-year history. The FA Charity Shield, its name until 2002, evolved from the Sheriff of London Shield - an annual fixture between the leading professional and amateur clubs of the time. Manchester United, the Football League champions, met Queens Park Rangers, the Southern League champions, in the first FA Charity Shield match in 1908. It finished in a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge. United won the replay, also at Stamford Bridge, 4-0. Three years later United were involved in what is still the highest-scoring Shield match, beating Swindon Town 8-4, again at the Bridge. Harold Halse, an England international, scored a double hat-trick. United’s next Shield success came at their own Old Trafford ground as they defeated Newcastle United 4-2 in 1952. Their other Shield wins came in 1956, 1957, 1983, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011. United shared the Shield in 1965, 1967, 1977 and 1990. The ’67 match, which resulted in a 3-3 draw at a packed Old Trafford, is particularly remembered for a goal by Spurs keeper Pat Jennings, whose kick from hands travelled the length of the field before bouncing over United counterpart Alex Stepney and into the net. The FA Charity Shield became a more prestigious fixture after it was decided to move the fixture to Wembley as an annual curtain-raiser between the reigning Football League champions and FA Cup holders. At the first of those, in 1974, a 67,000 crowd saw Liverpool edge Leeds United on penalties after a 1-1 draw. The record Shield attendance, which is unlikely ever to be beaten, is 98,000 at Everton v Liverpool in 1984. Everton beat their great Merseyside rivals 1-0. Wigan Athletic return to Wembley three months to the day after they lifted The FA Cup after Ben Watson’s extra-time goal won The Final against Manchester City. The Latics are no strangers to the national stadium, having appeared here in FA Trophy, Football League Trophy and Football League Play-Off Finals. Their Football League Cup Final with Manchester United in 2006, which United won 4-0, was played at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. 1 Manchester United v Wigan Athletic, Wembley Stadium, Sunday 11 August 2013, Kick-off 2pm FA Community Shield Background Manchester United v Wigan fact file • This year’s Community Shield game will be first time a club outside the top division features in the fixture since 1980 (West Ham United) • There have been 18 goals scored in the past four FA Community Shield games during ‘normal’ time • Manchester United have won two and lost none of their past five matches in regular time, winning two by way of a penalty shoot-out (against Chelsea in 2007 and Portsmouth in 2008) and losing one (to Chelsea in 2009) • The Premier League champions have scored eight goals in their past three appearances in the Shield • Five of the past six matches have featured the team who went on to win the Premier League title in that season • There has not been a penalty shootout to determine a winner in the past three Community Shield fixtures - prior to that it was needed in three consecutive years • This match marks the first time Wigan Athletic have appeared in the Community Shield • In the past four Community Shield games, 13 goals were scored in the second half with only five netted in the first 45 minutes • Manchester United have been involved in more penalty shootouts in the Community Shield than any other team (six) • Eight of the past 11 Shield matches have been won by sides that had won the Premier League in the previous season • Including this match, United have appeared in six of the past seven Community Shield games. • 17 cards have been shown in the past two Community Shield games (16 yellow and one red to Branislav Ivano- vic of Chelsea in 2012) • Wigan Athletic have beaten Manchester United only once in 17 attempts (in all competitions); losing the other 16 • Manchester United won both league meetings between the sides last season, scoring eight goals and keeping two clean sheets • Only nine cards have been shown over the course of the past three meetings involving these teams Shield background • In the Premier League era, 14 of the 21 Community Shields have been won by the previous season’s title winners with nine won by the reigning FA Cup champions (note this includes double winners in both categories) • The lowest a team has ever finished in the top-flight having won the Community Shield is 21st (Manchester City in 1937/38) • Ipswich and Queens Park Rangers (both twice) are the only teams to have played in more than one Charity/ Community Shield but never won it • Of teams to have qualified for this game more than once, Everton have the best win rate. The Toffees have won nine of their 11 Charity/Community Shields (82%) • The biggest victory recorded in this game came back in 1913, when the Professionals beat the Amateurs 7-2. In the modern era, this record is held by Manchester City, who beat West Bromwich Albion 6-1 in 1968/69 • Manchester United’s 8-4 victory over Swindon in 1911/12 remains the Charity/Community Shield game with the most goals • Eric Cantona is the last player to score a hat-trick in the Charity/Community Shield. The Frenchman netted a treble for Leeds in a 4-3 victory over Liverpool in 1992/93 • There have been seven penalty shootouts in the Charity/Community Shield and six have involved Manchester United. The Red Devils have won five and lost one (to Chelsea). The other involved Liverpool beating Leeds in 1974/75. 2 Manchester United v Wigan Athletic, Wembley Stadium, Sunday 11 August 2013, Kick-off 2pm FA Community Shield History Shield results Year Winner Runner-up Results Attendance 1908 Manchester United v Queens Park Rangers 1-1 N/A Manchester United v Queens Park Rangers 4-0 N/A 1909 Newcastle United v Northampton Town 2-0 N/A 1910 Brighton & Hove Albion v Aston Villa 1-0 N/A 1911 Manchester United v Swindon Town 8-4 N/A 1912 Blackburn Rovers v Queens Park Rangers 2-1 N/A 1913 Professionals v Amateurs 7-2 N/A 1920 West Bromwich Albion v Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 N/A 1921 Tottenham Hotspur v Burnley 2-0 N/A 1922 Huddersfield Town v Liverpool 1-0 N/A 1923 Professionals v Amateurs 2-0 N/A 1924 Professionals v Amateurs 3-1 N/A 1925 Amateurs v Professionals 6-1 N/A 1926 Amateurs v Professionals 6-3 N/A 1927 Cardiff City v Corinthians 2-1 N/A 1928 Everton v Blackburn Rovers 2-1 N/A 1929 Professionals v Amateurs 3-0 N/A 1930 Arsenal v Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 N/A 1931 Arsenal v West Bromwich Albion 1-0 N/A 1932 Everton v Newcastle United 5-3 N/A 1933 Arsenal v Everton 3-0 N/A 1934 Arsenal v Manchester City 4-0 N/A 1935 Sheffield Wednesday v Arsenal 1-0 N/A 1936 Sunderland v Arsenal 2-1 N/A 1937 Manchester City v Sunderland 2-0 N/A 1938 Arsenal v Preston North End 2-1 N/A 1948 Arsenal v Manchester United 4-3 N/A 1949 Portsmouth v Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-1* N/A 1950 World Cup Team v Canadian Touring Team 4-2 N/A 1951 Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle United 2-1 N/A 1952 Manchester United v Newcastle United 4-2 N/A 1953 Arsenal v Blackpool 3-1 N/A 1954 Wolverhampton Wanderers v West Bromwich Albion 4-4* N/A 1955 Chelsea v Newcastle United 3-0 N/A 1956 Manchester United v Manchester City 1-0 N/A 1957 Manchester United v Aston Villa 4-0 N/A 1958 Bolton Wanderers v Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-1 N/A 1959 Wolverhampton Wanderers v Nottingham Forest 3-1 N/A 1960 Burnley v Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-2* N/A 1961 Tottenham Hotspur v FA XI 3-2 N/A 1962 Tottenham Hotspur v Ipswich Town 5-1 N/A 3 Manchester United v Wigan Athletic, Wembley Stadium, Sunday 11 August 2013, Kick-off 2pm FA Community Shield Year Winner Runner-up Results Attendance 1963 Everton v Manchester United 4-0 N/A 1964 Liverpool v West Ham United 2-2* N/A 1965 Manchester United v Liverpool 2-2* N/A 1966 Liverpool v Everton 1-0 N/A 1967 Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur 3-3* N/A 1968 Manchester City v West Bromwich Albion 6-1 N/A 1969 Leeds United v Manchester City 2-1 N/A 1970 Everton v Chelsea 2-1 N/A 1971 Leicester City v Liverpool 1-0 N/A 1972 Manchester City v Aston Villa 1-0 N/A 1973 Burnley v Manchester City 1-0 N/A 1974 Liverpool+ v Leeds United 1-1 67,000 1975 Derby County v West Ham United 2-0 59,000 1976 Liverpool v Southampton 1-0 76,800 1977 Liverpool v Manchester

Felly’s Football Tour Sprint/Summer 2021 (tbc) Fundraising for Fellysfund in memory of our good friend The Motivation To Turf Moor To the University of Bolton Stadium Supporting Felly’s Fund To Deepdale To Goodison Park To Boundary Park Felly's Football Tour Introduction 3 Redwood Events have been arranging charity walks and cycle events since 2007 and have recently started to work with the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation. This has given us a great exposure to, and understanding of, the challenges that the Motor Neurone Disease can bring. Life changes very quickly for those diagnosed with MND and for their families. The average life expectancy for someone with Motor Neurone Disease is just 2-5 years from the onset of symptoms. A third of people diagnosed will die within a year and half within 2 years. It’s a 1/300 lifetime risk in the UK of being diagnosed with MND. That’s 3 children in each and every school today. There is no known cause of MND and there is no cure or effective treatment, it’s always fatal. When Paul Stanway talked to us about the great work they have done in memory of their great friend Felly, we were very keen to help. Felly’s Football Tour will combine a 131 mile continuous walking tour from Liverpool FC (Felly’s favourite team) to Fleetwood Town FC calling at fifteen other football grounds in between. This is a journey of 130 miles. After a short break for breakfast, the walking will give to cycling as riders will then head north from Fleetwood Town to Barrow AFC via Morecambe FC, a journey of 73 miles.

  • Conference 2015 Special
R.A. BOARD VOICEOVER “Conference 2015 Special” Referees’ Association Announcement At meeting of the RA Board on Sunday 5th July 2015 the following were elected: Chairman: Paul Field Vice Chairman: Ian Campbell Treasurer: Eddie McGrath Further announcements will follow during the coming weeks as we continue to structure the RA Board. ************************************************************************************************************************************** THE THOUGHTS OF CHAIRMAN PAUL (Paul Field) I have been a member of the R.A. Board for 5 years during which time I have seen seven different Chairman, a Board of Inquiry regarding the general management of the RA, and we had an office facility which was not fit-for-purpose, The RA has now started to move forward and this is now history but let’s remember one quote which typifies the organisation: Henry Ford said – “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got”. In the case of The R.A., a poor product which is not relevant to majority of the Refereeing family, declining membership and often people being in office for far too long. In my view, The R.A. now has to move forward and there are sound building blocks for the future which are positive steps. We need to remember that our main reason for existence is to provide a platform for on-going training, development, mentoring and mutual support. The thriving LRAs are the ones that concentrate on this, have lively debates, a good social side and little business transacted at meetings. As a collective (individually and LRA’s) we are all responsible! There is an urgent need to change people’s perception of the RA and the quality of the membership experience.

Nowadays, after-match written reports are prepared immediately after every football match and provide the readers with the apparently objective representations of important events and occurrences of the game. The authors of this paper analyzed four after-match reports (retrieved from Manchester United’s own website), two regarding their lost games and two on their won games. Hodge and Kress’s (1996) framework was followed in the analysis of the grammatical features of the texts at hand. Also, taking into consideration the pivotal role of lexicalization as one dimension of the textualization process (Fairclough, 2012), vocabulary and more specifically the choice of specific verbs, nouns, adverbs and noun or noun phrase modification were examined.

This is Leicester Road's first away game of the season after their acceptance into the league following an FA appeal resulting from the demise of Hinckley United. Over the years Paget enjoyed many great games against Hinckley United, Hinckley Athletic and Hinckley Town and hopefully today's match will be befitting of the occasion.
