Review: Roadburn Friday 20th April 2018 By Daniel Pietersen Day Two at Roadburn ‘18 and already Never wandering off into too-loose the bar is raised pretty high, with sets jam-band territory, the quartet unleash from Black Decades, Kælan Mikla and some of the best heads-down psych- Servants of the Apocalyptic Goat Rave rock I’ve seen and the crowd absolutely being my personal highlights from the lap it up over the set’s two-hour (two day before. We’ve a lot to get through, hours!) duration. though, and these bands won’t watch themselves. The Ruins of Beverast unleash a black metal stormcloud, all martial drums and lightning-strike guitars sweeping scythe-like over the field of nodding heads in a packed Green Room. It’s a ferocious, scathing display made all the more intense by the devastatingly tight musicianship. An immense start to the Panopticon (Paul Verhagen) day and that’s Roadburn in a nutshell; What Jeremy Bentham, the 18th even the first band on one of the century English philosopher who smaller stages are world class. developed the concept of the Panopticon, would think of his creation’s musical namesake is, sadly, impossible to know. I like to think that, even if the music were beyond him, the passionate social reformer would appreciate the politically relevant sentiments of the band, something which is made most obvious on their opening selection of country- influenced tracks. Banjo and mandolin Motorpsycho (Paul Verhagen) blend with mournful voices, singing of Next door, on the Main Stage, lost families and failing factories, into Motorpsycho are working up their songs that wouldn’t be out of place on groove and creating the kind of sounds, a Steve Earle record. -

Ep. ..– Think back. It’s the mid-nineties. We are on the brink of a new century, and are living and breathing the ‘New Age’ people have been preaching about since the eighties. Thanks to more efficient communication, and the regularising machine of empire, the world seems to have got smaller, and more and more provincials are gravitating towards the sprawling, crowded metropolis, all manically networking to win the same few jobs (they all want to be ‘socialites’, or ‘artists’). Many of us are richer and more mobile than ever, but arguably have less freedom. Modern life is a struggle, it seems – it’s dog eat dog in the urban jungle, and those who can’t keep up the pace soon become victims (actually, being a ‘victim’ is the in thing). ‘Reality’ is the hottest show in town: we’re done with drama and fantasy, as amateur theatrics and seeing people actually suffer is such a blast (as well as being a really ‘ironic’ creative experiment). This is a culture that has long realised Warhol’s prophecy, where everyone wants their bite of the fame cherry, but where fame itself is a dirty shadow of what it used to be. The young recall nothing but peace, yet fierce wars still bristle at the world’s edges, and even as the concrete keeps rising, a smog of instability and malaise lingers. -

Analogy with the five Hesiodic ages, in which the silver age was both later and less worthy than the golden, suggests the cliche of decline. To what extent did the Romans of the early imperial period feel that they and their contemporaries were a falling away from the previous generation? We will see that the change in form of government, by denying opportunities for significant political speech, trivialised the art of oratory. But was there any such external constraint on poetry? Modern critics have reproached Silver Latin epic and tragedy with being 'rhetorical'. Certainly it is clear from Tacitus' Dialogus that men thwarted from political expression transferred to the safer vehicle of historical or mythical poetry both the techniques and ideals of public oratory. But just as no one suggests that Juvenal's satires were poorer compositions because of his apparent rhetorical skill, so rhetorical colouring in the higher poetic genres of tragedy and epic is not necessarily a fault. -

Coulson, Advisor Benjamin Acosta-Hughes Tom Hawkins Copyright by Gabriel Fuchs 2013 ABSTRACT This study examines two facets of the reception of Ovid’s Tristia in the 16th century: its commentary tradition and its adaptation by Latin poets. It lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive study of the Renaissance reception of the Tristia by providing a scholarly platform where there was none before (particularly with regard to the unedited, unpublished commentary tradition), and offers literary case studies of poetic postscripts to Ovid’s Tristia in order to explore the wider impact of Ovid’s exilic imaginary in 16th-century Europe. After a brief introduction, the second chapter introduces the three major commentaries on the Tristia printed in the Renaissance: those of Bartolomaeus Merula (published 1499, Venice), Veit Amerbach (1549, Basel), and Hecules Ciofanus (1581, Antwerp) and analyzes their various contexts, styles, and approaches to the text. The third chapter shows the commentators at work, presenting a more focused look at how these commentators apply their differing methods to the same selection of the Tristia, namely Book 2. These two chapters combine to demonstrate how commentary on the Tristia developed over the course of the 16th century: it begins from an encyclopedic approach, becomes focused on rhetoric, and is later aimed at textual criticism, presenting a trajectory that ii becomes increasingly focused and philological. -

Homer’s Odyssey provides a critical recipient for such inquiry, and Purves has explored the construction of space in the poem with relation to its implications on Greek epic as a genre. This paper seeks to expand upon the spatial discourse on Homer’s Odyssey by pinpointing the modern geographic concept of power, tracing a term inspired by Michael Foucault, or a “cartography of power,” in the poem. In Chapter 2 I employ a narratological approach to examine power dynamics played out over specific spaces of Odysseus’ wanderings, and then on Ithaca, analyzing the intersection of space, power, knowledge, and deception. The second half of this chapter discusses the threshold of Odysseus’ palace and flows of power across spheres of gender and class. -

Keywords: Ars Amatoria, Remedia Amoris, Augustus, politics, Rome, Parthia, Gaius Caesar My subtitle implies that I want to strike a balance, or to discuss the question of the Augustanism/anti-Augustanism of the Ars from a theoretical point of view. In fact, I won’t be doing that. The ‘Augustan’ side of the question has been treated in the best possible way by Mario Labate in his book L’arte di farsi amare,1 the ‘anti-Augustan’ side by Alison Sharrock, particularly in her article on ‘Ovid and the Politics of Reading’,2 and the ‘aporetic’ side by Duncan Kennedy and Alessandro Barchiesi.3 I couldn’t do it better. So, the first part of my title is more relevant for my chapter. It makes fairly clear, I think, my predilection for a good old anti-Augustan approach to Ovid. -

Anderson University of California, Berkeley Ever since Richard Heinze developed his masterful study of Ovid’s narrative styles by pitting similar stories recounted in elegiac meter against those of the Metamorphoses, starting from the near-contemporaneously composed myths of Persephone of Fasti 4 and of Met. 5, a methodology of contextualization has been legitimated for exploring these materials.1 As perhaps the richest pair of such narratives, elegiac and hexameter, the story of how Cephalus loved, married, and then accidentally killed Procris in a hunting accident has generated numerous studies since Heinze’s time.2 The earliest adherents of Heinze used the account in Ars Amatoria 3.687ff. to demonstrate the greater weight and epic character of the account in Met. 7.672ff. (or of 7.796ff., to limit ourselves to the death of Procris in the Met. as the strictly parallel passage).3 In more recent years, as the “epic” character of the Met. has been called into question, the procedures of contextualization have altered somewhat. On the one hand, many studies have continued to emphasize the greater power and pathos of Procris’ death in the Met. and so called attention to features of Ars 3 that appear to be earlier and less artistic details consciously changed and improved by Ovid in the later Met.
