Abbreviations of the ancient authors derive from the OCD, OLD, and LSJ. 6 Abstract of Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of the University of Florida in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy OVID, AUGUSTUS, AND THE EXILIC JOURNEY IN THE TRISTIA AND EPISTULAE EX PONTO By Thomas George Hendren May 2013 Chair: Jennifer Rea Major: Classical Studies Ovid’s extensive references to act of writing poetry, both the superficial self- deprecating claims to poetic decline, as well as the thinly veiled proclamations of poetic novelty and genius, remain major points of scholarly contention. By reevaluating Ovid’s persistent focus on his own poetic act through various metapoetic devices, this project reconsiders Ovid’s literary response to exile and his strategy of rebalancing his own political position opposite the emperor within the eyes of the Roman elite. Based on the assumption that at least part of Ovid’s exile was the result of his offensive Ars Amatoria (Tr. 2.211–12), I argue that Ovid’s fantastic depiction of his own exilic journey and of the Pontic region is in fact an enactment of the emperor’s misguided reading, which mistook the poem’s narrator for the poet himself. This accounts for Ovid’s mixture of poetry and reality in exile: indeed, he merges fiction and history to such an extent that judicious scholars continue to question the authenticity of the entire debacle. Ovid’s rewriting of the exilic journey as a novel poetic undertaking and his dream-like descriptions of Tomis and the Pontic landscape break down the barriers between poetry and history, and thus between narrator and poet. In doing so, Ovid not only mocks the emperor as a malus 7 interpres, unfit to stand for Roman aristocratic values, but aggrandizes his own poetic accomplishments. This project attempts a new, unified reading of the exilic epistles, one which incorporates Ovid’s literary and political responses to exile. My reexamination of Ovid’s dissimulation in Tomis as well as his stance of poetic degredation addresses not only Ovid’s exilic lies, but also the nearly two millennia of intellectual exile he suffered at the hands of the scholarly community who, until the mid-twentieth century, rejected the final third of his work as sycophantic, redundant complaint. 8 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Second only to the “mystery of Ovid’s exile,”1 in terms of interest to literary critics, is the relationship that Ovid presents between himself and the emperor in his exilic epistles, the Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto. The self-contradictory nature of that relationship continues to beguile even the most seasoned readers:2 it allows Ovid, for example, to claim that his life was preserved by the emperor’s leniency3 and simultaneously consider exile a death sentence.4 This type of “dissimulation”5 creates a subtext of power struggle between the exile and the emperor:6 Augustus has exercised his power of life and death over the poet,7 and it remains for the poet to employ his 1 The title of Thibault (1964), which remains fundamental when considering the theories proposed for Ovid’s exile. 2 See Williams (1994: 2) who catalogues Ovid’s “large scale deception” in great detail. 3 Tr. 1.1.19–20, 2.125–8, 5.4.19–22, 5.9.11–14; P. 4.5.31–2, etc. 4 Called the “debitor vitae-motif” by Helzle (1989: 131). Banjo and mandolin Motorpsycho (Paul Verhagen) blend with mournful voices, singing of Next door, on the Main Stage, lost families and failing factories, into Motorpsycho are working up their songs that wouldn’t be out of place on groove and creating the kind of sounds, a Steve Earle record.

This is a culture that has long realised Warhol’s prophecy, where everyone wants their bite of the fame cherry, but where fame itself is a dirty shadow of what it used to be. The young recall nothing but peace, yet fierce wars still bristle at the world’s edges, and even as the concrete keeps rising, a smog of instability and malaise lingers.

Analogy with the five Hesiodic ages, in which the silver age was both later and less worthy than the golden, suggests the cliche of decline. To what extent did the Romans of the early imperial period feel that they and their contemporaries were a falling away from the previous generation? We will see that the change in form of government, by denying opportunities for significant political speech, trivialised the art of oratory. But was there any such external constraint on poetry? Modern critics have reproached Silver Latin epic and tragedy with being 'rhetorical'. Certainly it is clear from Tacitus' Dialogus that men thwarted from political expression transferred to the safer vehicle of historical or mythical poetry both the techniques and ideals of public oratory. But just as no one suggests that Juvenal's satires were poorer compositions because of his apparent rhetorical skill, so rhetorical colouring in the higher poetic genres of tragedy and epic is not necessarily a fault.

Coulson, Advisor Benjamin Acosta-Hughes Tom Hawkins Copyright by Gabriel Fuchs 2013 ABSTRACT This study examines two facets of the reception of Ovid’s Tristia in the 16th century: its commentary tradition and its adaptation by Latin poets. It lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive study of the Renaissance reception of the Tristia by providing a scholarly platform where there was none before (particularly with regard to the unedited, unpublished commentary tradition), and offers literary case studies of poetic postscripts to Ovid’s Tristia in order to explore the wider impact of Ovid’s exilic imaginary in 16th-century Europe. After a brief introduction, the second chapter introduces the three major commentaries on the Tristia printed in the Renaissance: those of Bartolomaeus Merula (published 1499, Venice), Veit Amerbach (1549, Basel), and Hecules Ciofanus (1581, Antwerp) and analyzes their various contexts, styles, and approaches to the text. The third chapter shows the commentators at work, presenting a more focused look at how these commentators apply their differing methods to the same selection of the Tristia, namely Book 2. These two chapters combine to demonstrate how commentary on the Tristia developed over the course of the 16th century: it begins from an encyclopedic approach, becomes focused on rhetoric, and is later aimed at textual criticism, presenting a trajectory that ii becomes increasingly focused and philological.

Homer’s Odyssey provides a critical recipient for such inquiry, and Purves has explored the construction of space in the poem with relation to its implications on Greek epic as a genre. This paper seeks to expand upon the spatial discourse on Homer’s Odyssey by pinpointing the modern geographic concept of power, tracing a term inspired by Michael Foucault, or a “cartography of power,” in the poem. In Chapter 2 I employ a narratological approach to examine power dynamics played out over specific spaces of Odysseus’ wanderings, and then on Ithaca, analyzing the intersection of space, power, knowledge, and deception. The second half of this chapter discusses the threshold of Odysseus’ palace and flows of power across spheres of gender and class.

Keywords: Ars Amatoria, Remedia Amoris, Augustus, politics, Rome, Parthia, Gaius Caesar My subtitle implies that I want to strike a balance, or to discuss the question of the Augustanism/anti-Augustanism of the Ars from a theoretical point of view. In fact, I won’t be doing that. The ‘Augustan’ side of the question has been treated in the best possible way by Mario Labate in his book L’arte di farsi amare,1 the ‘anti-Augustan’ side by Alison Sharrock, particularly in her article on ‘Ovid and the Politics of Reading’,2 and the ‘aporetic’ side by Duncan Kennedy and Alessandro Barchiesi.3 I couldn’t do it better. So, the first part of my title is more relevant for my chapter. It makes fairly clear, I think, my predilection for a good old anti-Augustan approach to Ovid.

Anderson University of California, Berkeley Ever since Richard Heinze developed his masterful study of Ovid’s narrative styles by pitting similar stories recounted in elegiac meter against those of the Metamorphoses, starting from the near-contemporaneously composed myths of Persephone of Fasti 4 and of Met. 5, a methodology of contextualization has been legitimated for exploring these materials.1 As perhaps the richest pair of such narratives, elegiac and hexameter, the story of how Cephalus loved, married, and then accidentally killed Procris in a hunting accident has generated numerous studies since Heinze’s time.2 The earliest adherents of Heinze used the account in Ars Amatoria 3.687ff. to demonstrate the greater weight and epic character of the account in Met. 7.672ff. (or of 7.796ff., to limit ourselves to the death of Procris in the Met. as the strictly parallel passage).3 In more recent years, as the “epic” character of the Met. has been called into question, the procedures of contextualization have altered somewhat. On the one hand, many studies have continued to emphasize the greater power and pathos of Procris’ death in the Met. and so called attention to features of Ars 3 that appear to be earlier and less artistic details consciously changed and improved by Ovid in the later Met.
