Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

More recently, studies have neglected content analysis due to perceived homogeneity in themes, despite evidence that the modern genre is distinct from its past. As lyrical patterns are strong markers of genre, this study attempts to characterize heavy metal in the 21st century by analyzing lyrics for specific themes and perspectives. Citing evidence that the “Millennial” generation confers significant developments to popular culture, the contemporary genre is termed “Millennial heavy metal” throughout, and the study is framed accordingly. -
Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists. -

While the stage presence of the band is relatively calm, the visual accompaniments filmed and edited by drummer Dave Sumner provide textural kinetics, without actually overpowering the complex rumble the band creates. Triggered samples and treated drum loops roil in the background, while the overpowering down-tuned bass ARTIST: ACTORS & ACTRESSES played by vocalist Scott Bennett bursts at the seams. Moving forward TITLE: WE LOVE OUR ENEMY and aft through the stereo field, Andrew Schiller’s guitars provide CAT#: Sheath028v eerie whines alternating with roaring walls of chords. The band can FORMAT: LP deftly move from a vast downpour to a quite intimate and delicate GENRE: shoegaze indie rock singularity, often within mere measures. The lean arrangements of BOX LOT: 12 the band’s material allow for the players to concoct a sound all their SRLP: $16.98 own yet deliver full sets of songs, each one sounding very different UPC: 798546267017 from the last. On multitasking, craftsmanship, and letting go of your work Musician and visual artist Jacob Bannon on balancing the demands of running a record label with a creative practice, and what it means to put things out into the world and let them have their own life. You seem to be constantly multitasking—moving between bands and your label, your fine art stuff, and your design work. From an outsider’s perspective, it seems like that could get chaotic. How do you manage it? There’s some times when it can feel a little daunting, but it’s all about organization and timing. There are some times where, all of a sudden, you’ll look at what you’ve done and you think that you have a free and clear schedule for a little while. And you then look at your to-do list and you realize that you have six little things that aren’t really so little that you have to deal with. Today is a good example, so I’ll walk you through my day: Wake up in the morning, hang out with the family, make them breakfast and coffee and stuff. Head out for the day, come to the Deathwish office, try to get through my emails for a few hours, because that alters your day, obviously. Then I have two Deathwish records for upcoming releases that I had to format for CD and cassette that I’ve already done the vinyl designs for and had those approved.
