Introduction This Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) has been produced by CFA Archaeology on behalf of H20 Urban (NO.2) LLP to detail a programme of archaeological monitoring to be undertaken at Store Street, Manchester during relevant construction work. The scheme comprises the construction of a high-rise residential development which will utilise a piling method and phased levelling of the site. The archaeological watching brief is required per Condition 7 of the approve planning application (126608/FO/2020): ‘No demolition or development shall take place until the applicant or their agents or successors in title has secured the implementation of a programme of archaeological works. The works are to be undertaken in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) submitted to and approved in writing by Manchester Planning Authority. The WSI shall cover the following: 1. A phased programme and methodology of investigation and recording to include:- an archaeological watching brief 2. A programme for post investigation assessment to include: - production of a final report on the investigation results 3. Deposition of the final report with the Greater Manchester Historic Environment Record. 4. Dissemination of the results of the archaeological investigations commensurate with their significance. 5. Provision for archive deposition of the report and records of the site investigation. 6.     7 Manchester’s Historic Character – Analysis and Recommendations 7.1 Unenclosed land broad type Figure 4 The area of the former Shadow Moss is indicated by the distinctive field boundary patterns depicted on OS 6” 1 st edition mapping of c1882 Description This character type comprises areas that are currently of low economic value and where there is little or no settlement. It includes marginal land such as open mossland and marsh, and other unimproved land which may nonetheless be exploited, such as common land, pasture and moorland. Unenclosed land only occurs in Manchester district as a previous type. 7.1.1 Open moorland Description and historical context Moorland does not exist as a current type within the Manchester landscape; it appears as a previous type only in the Baguley Moor area. Some areas of the former moorland have not been developed and although their character has changed, they may still contain palaeoenvironmental and archaeological evidence. 27 For example, the playing fields associated with Brookway High School (HLC Ref HGM13548) and the playing fields east of Church Stoke Walk (HLC Ref HGM13842) have both been enclosed from farmland that was formerly moorland. 7.1.2 Mossland Description and historical context Although there is no surviving untouched mossland in Manchester, there were several mosses in the district in the past. Mossland has thus been recorded as a previous rather than a current character type. Like the upland moors, the former lowland mosses were probably enclosed at a relatively late date. The three main former mosses in Manchester are Hough Moss in the area which is now Moss Side and Whalley Range; Shadow Moss, near Moss Nook and Manchester Airport in the south of the district; and White Moss, near Charlestown in the northern part of the district.

    GREATER MANCHESTER CANALS HERITAGE PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT Revised 2014 21.5.14 1 Review- 21/05/2014 Greater Manchester Canals Heritage Partnership Agreement EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Greater Manchester Canals Heritage Partnership Agreement (HPA) is intended to improve the management of heritage assets upon the various Canal & River Trust (CRT) canals situated within the Greater Manchester area. It is intended that the HPA, which brings together the principles of existing CRT heritage guidance and processes will provide reassurance for local planning authorities (LPA’s) and stakeholders that works of repair are completed to a high conservation standard. The canals within Greater Manchester are a multi-designated historic environment that contains high value heritage assets. These assets include archaeological remains, working heritage, listed buildings and conservation areas and are subject to ongoing development and maintenance. The HPA is designed to reduce bureaucracy, save time on consent procedures and embed effective heritage management within the corporate culture of CRT by increasing both accountability and self-regulation. The HPA is based around a traffic light system of agreed works that are categorised in terms of requiring consent (red) or clearance (amber) or are permitted works (green). The partners of the Greater Manchester Canals HPA are: Canal & River Trust (the main landowner), English Heritage, Bolton Council, Bury Metropolitan Borough Council, Manchester City Council, Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council, Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council, Salford City Council, Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council, Wigan Council and the Greater Manchester Archaeological Advisory Service (GMAAS). The HPA will run for a period of five years and shall be subject to annual monitoring and review by the partners, with the potential for further extension at the discretion of the partners.

We’re the charity who look after and bring to life 2000 miles of canals & rivers. Our waterways contribute to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time. These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the strategic and local green-blue infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. Our waterways are on the doorstep of 8 million people and reach some of the most deprived communities within the UK. By caring for our waterways and promoting their use we believe we can improve the wellbeing of our nation. The Trust’s work is focussed on making life better by water. In the case of river navigations, the word ‘River’ follows the name. Where a waterway has been registered by the Panel for Historical Engineering Works as an Historical Engineering Work (HEW), the HEW number is given after the name of the waterway. Following the name of the waterway there is, where applicable, a list of structures registered as HEWs which are situated on the waterway. For nearly all the inland waterways named in the list information has been recorded in the PHEW Inland Waterways Database.
