Environmental Statement Volume 2: MA08 Preface The working draft Environmental Statement This report forms part of Volume 2 of the working draft Environmental Statement (ES) for Phase 2b of High Speed Two (HS2). The purpose of the working draft ES is to provide the public and other stakeholders with an opportunity to review and comment on preliminary environmental information for Phase 2b of HS2, which is based on a stage in the ongoing design development and environmental assessment process. Nothing included at this stage is intended to limit the form of the final scheme that will be presented in the hybrid Bill and formal ES in light of further scheme development and the ongoing discussions with stakeholders such as Transport for the North and Midlands Connect. Consultation on the working draft ES is being undertaken to help inform the ongoing design and environmental assessment in advance of producing a statutory formal ES. The formal ES will accompany the deposit of the hybrid Bill for Phase 2b of HS2. Phase 2b comprises the section of the proposed HS2 rail network, from Crewe to Manchester (and a connection onto the West Coast Main Line (WCML)) (the western leg), and from the West Midlands to Leeds (and a connection onto, and part electrification of, the Midland Main Line (MML) and a connection onto the East Coast Main Line (ECML)) via the East Midlands and South Yorkshire (the eastern leg). Collectively, this is referred to in this working draft ES as the ‘Proposed Scheme’. The working draft ES describes the Proposed Scheme and reports its likely significant environmental effects and the measures proposed to mitigate those effects, based on a stage in the ongoing design and environmental assessment. The hybrid Bill for Phase One of the HS2 network, between London and the West Midlands, was the subject of an ES deposited in November 2013, followed by ESs deposited with Additional Provisions to that Bill in 2014 and 2015.

The travel to work area is estimated to be the eighth largest in the UK outside London yet under 1% of commuting trips to the City Centre are by rail – a significantly lower proportion than in other major conurbation areas, where, typically, equivalent figures are between 10 and 20%. This reflects the relative dearth of routes, stations, and services to accommodate demands for travel within the Greater Nottingham area, and a lack of investment for upgrading rail facilities over many years. In addition Greater Nottingham’s present regional links are poor with the possible exception of the London corridor. 3. The current SNRN strategy was formulated in the early 1990s when it was known as the Greater Nottingham Area Rail Development Strategy (GNARDS). The strategy (shown diagrammatically in Appendix 1) envisaged the provision of two new main routes, for cross-conurbation shuttle services: S Ilkeston – Nottingham Station (via the Trowell-Radford route) and thence to either Gedling (using the former colliery line) or Bingham; 1 S Sandiacre – Nottingham Station (via Long Eaton, Attenborough and Beeston) and thence to either Gedling or Bingham.

    7 Manchester’s Historic Character – Analysis and Recommendations 7.1 Unenclosed land broad type Figure 4 The area of the former Shadow Moss is indicated by the distinctive field boundary patterns depicted on OS 6” 1 st edition mapping of c1882 Description This character type comprises areas that are currently of low economic value and where there is little or no settlement. It includes marginal land such as open mossland and marsh, and other unimproved land which may nonetheless be exploited, such as common land, pasture and moorland. Unenclosed land only occurs in Manchester district as a previous type. 7.1.1 Open moorland Description and historical context Moorland does not exist as a current type within the Manchester landscape; it appears as a previous type only in the Baguley Moor area. Some areas of the former moorland have not been developed and although their character has changed, they may still contain palaeoenvironmental and archaeological evidence. 27 For example, the playing fields associated with Brookway High School (HLC Ref HGM13548) and the playing fields east of Church Stoke Walk (HLC Ref HGM13842) have both been enclosed from farmland that was formerly moorland. 7.1.2 Mossland Description and historical context Although there is no surviving untouched mossland in Manchester, there were several mosses in the district in the past. Mossland has thus been recorded as a previous rather than a current character type. Like the upland moors, the former lowland mosses were probably enclosed at a relatively late date. The three main former mosses in Manchester are Hough Moss in the area which is now Moss Side and Whalley Range; Shadow Moss, near Moss Nook and Manchester Airport in the south of the district; and White Moss, near Charlestown in the northern part of the district.

    Industrial Heritage - The Textile Industry Education Teacher’s Kit Background There is archaeological evidence of textile production in Britain from the late-prehistoric period onwards. For many thousands of years wool was the staple textile product of Britain. The dominance of wool in the British textile industry changed rapidly during the eighteenth century with the development of mechanised silk production and then mechanised cotton production. By the mid-nineteenth century all four major branches of the textile industry (cotton, wool, flax, hemp and jute and silk) had been mechanised and the British landscape was dominated by over 10,000 mill buildings with their distinctive chimneys. Overseas competition led to a decline in the textile industry in the mid-twentieth century. Today woollen production is once again the dominant part of the sector together with artificial and man-made fibres, although output is much reduced from historic levels. Innovation Thomas Lombe’s silk mill, built in 1721, is regarded as the first factory-based textile mill in Britain. However, it was not until the handloom was developed following the introduction of John Kay’s flying shuttle in 1733 that other branches of the textile industry (notably cotton and wool) became increasingly mechanised. In the second half of the eighteenth century, a succession of major innovations including James Hargreaves’s spinning jenny (1764), Richard Arkwright’s water frame (1769), his carding engine (1775), and Samuel Crompton’s mule (1779), revolutionised the preparation and spinning of cotton and wool and led to the establishment of textile factories where several machines were housed under one roof.
