    ISSN 1476-180 North West Geography Volume 8, Number 1, 2008 North West Geography, Volume 8, 2008 1 A deeper understanding of climate induced risk to urban infrastructure: case studies of past events in Greater Manchester Nigel Lawson and Sarah Lindley Geography, School of Environment and Development The University of Manchester Email: [email protected] Abstract A detailed knowledge of past events is sometimes used to help understand and manage potential future risks. Flood risk management is one area where this has been particularly true, but the same ideas could theoretically be applied to other potential climate induced impacts in urban areas such as subsidence, sewer collapse and land movement. Greater Manchester, as the world’s first industrial city, provides an ideal case study of how such events have affected the urban infrastructure in the past. This paper reviews some of the evidence which can be gleaned from past events and also shows how the realisation of some climate-related risks in heavy modified urban environments can only be fully understood through a consideration of sub-surface as well as surface characteristics. Key words flood, subsidence, risk assessment, Greater Manchester Introduction element which is exposed. It follows, therefore, that unless Urban areas have always been prone to climate-related risks there is a connection between all three risk components, as a result of their ability to modify physical processes such there can be no risk.     Public statement Proposals for the relocation of Manchester Cenotaph and associated memorials Date: 10 September 2012 Status: Immediate release Starts War Memorials Trust has provided comments on the planning applications relating to the proposed relocation of the Manchester Cenotaph. Whilst the Trust agrees that the memorial is in need of some conservation and repair we are, at present, objecting to the proposal for the relocation of this important Grade II* Lutyens memorial and the later associated plaques. War Memorials Trust does not have a blanket opposition to relocation. If evidence demonstrating a need, and all relevant research and investigations has been done, then we accept it is sometimes necessary. All of our comments on this proposal, summarised below, are based on the information currently made publicly accessible through the planning system. We do not feel all appropriate investigations have been shown to be undertaken. However, we will be happy to comment further should additional information become available. War Memorials Trust has been involved in some meetings with Manchester City Council and Stephen Levrant: Heritage Architecture Ltd. regarding these proposals. At these meetings the Trust has raised a number of issues and reservations over the proposals. These include the loss of the group value between the Cenotaph and St Peters cross as well as the site more widely. Lutyens originally designed the memorial for this specific site and expressed a wish for the cross to remain in its location. War Memorials Trust only recommends relocation where a memorial is no longer publicly accessible or is at risk. This is due to the impact that relocation can have upon the longevity and structural integrity of the memorial.

    CHAPTER 6 JAMES AND WAINWRIGHT BELLHOUSE LTD. COTTON SPINNERS The business venture started by David Bellhouse (1764 – 1840) that seems least related to the rest is cotton spinning. This business was passed to his sons, James (1796 – 1874) and Wainwright Bellhouse (1800 – 1885), about a decade before the father’s death. By 1833, David Bellhouse had ceased to list himself as a cotton spinner in the Manchester directories. Wain- wright Bellhouse first appeared in the Manchester directories in 1832 with his occupation given as cotton spinner; James Bellhouse followed in 1836. The firm was know as Messrs. Bellhouse by 18311 and as James and Wainwright (J. & W.) Bellhouse by 1833.2 Advertisement for the Medlock New Mill3 129 The traditional date for the start of J. & W. Bellhouse is 1792.4 However, this is the year in which David Bellhouse senior took up residence in Faulkner Street and began to work inde- pendently as a joiner and builder, not the year the spinning business started. David Bellhouse built the original mill, associated with the firm known as the Medlock New Mill, in 1806 and so the beginning of the firm should be dated from that year. The mill was just outside the boundary of the Township of Manchester as defined in 1800.5 It was bounded by the Medlock River and by Pritchard, York and Charles Streets in Chorlton on Medlock or Chorlton Row. The mill was situated directly across the Medlock River from all the other Bellhouse enterprises, which were in Hunt or Whitworth Street. David Bellhouse senior built a second mill at this location in 1836.6 Sometime before 1851 a third mill was added.

    River Irk – Greater Manchester An advisory visit carried out by the Wild Trout Trust – Feb 2015 1 1. Introduction This report is the output of a Wild Trout Trust Advisory Visit (AV) undertaken along approximately 3km of the River Irk in Greater Manchester. The visit was carried out by Dr. Paul Gaskell and hosted by Jo Fraser (Groundwork North West), Mike Duddy (Salford Friendly Anglers) and Dave Barlow (Manchester City Council). The River Irk was walked from an upstream limit at NGR (National Grid Reference) SD 86762 05493 to a downstream limit at SD 83972 03627 Throughout the report, normal convention is followed with respect to bank identification i.e. banks are designated Left Hand Bank (LHB) or Right Hand Bank (RHB) whilst looking downstream. Figure 1: Map overview of the catchment including upstream (yellow triangle) and downstream (red dot) limits of inspected reaches 2. Catchment overview The surveyed sections of watercourse are all captured within a single waterbody (GB112069061130); listed as River Irk – Wince Brook to Moston Brook. A number of the parameters are judged to be of less than “Good Potential” for this heavily modified waterbody (e.g. excerpted data given in Table 1.) – giving an overall current and projected ecological potential of “Moderate”. The stand-out assessment results are those for “Phosphate” and “Invertebrate” parameters that are judged to be of “Poor” and “Bad” potential respectively; resulting in an overall biological quality of “Bad”. The presence of a detergents factory (with associated, documented pollution and fish-kill incidents) is a fundamental issue for this section of the River Irk.
