MAJOR WORKS CONSISTED OF:

This depot on will be the operation and maintenance centre for the new 34 km railway connecting the new airport at and the new town at to Central district on Island. The depot is constructed on reclaimed land with an area of 325,000 sq.m.

Major works included :  The removal off-site of 277,000 cu.m of surcharge material used for consolidation of reclamation for the Main Deport Building  The Main Depot Building, 325m long, 84m wide and 12m high constructed with reinforced concrete pad foundations and columns supporting steel trusses spanning 21m with roof and walls formed of double skin insulated cladding  Ancillary Buildings consisting of 20 structures, generally single storey buildings with construction materials and methods similar to the Main Depot  The external works included all sub-surface drainage and ducting systems, preparation of all sub-ballast and drainage for the trackwork, overhead line foundations and landscaping works as well as 5 km of road using rigid concrete carriageway construction  Three grade separation structures consisting of reinforced concrete box tunnel structures constructed on sub-ballast base material and two bridges crossing the railway

HIGHLIGHTS :

As there was no land access to the site for this multi-discipline project, careful consideration had to be given to procurement, delivery, and storage of materials.

This was one of the projects in the Airport Core Programme therefore timely completion of the works was critical. The main depot building completion was paramount for the success of the project.

The completion of the North Lantau Expressway bridge and associated access roads and embankments within a 3 month period emphasized the Joint Venture’s teamwork & determination to complete the works on time.
