BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH The Chris Gonzalez Library & Archives was founded with a mission to “collect, preserve and provide access to items by, for, or about the gay and lesbian community; focusing on but not limited to, the Central Indiana area.” The idea for a library was the brainchild of Michael Bohr, who was concerned with what would happen to his personal collection of items documenting gay life in Indiana should anything happen to him. In the early 1990s, Bohr began seeking donations of materials, investigating 501c3 status, and looking for a physical home for the collections. The Library & Archives officially opened in 1995 and had its first location at the newly established Diversity Center on Southeastern Avenue in Indianapolis, Indiana. The library’s namesake, Chris Gonzalez, was a local activist who founded the Indiana Youth Group in 1987 and died of AIDS at the age of 30 in 1994. The Library & Archives was an all volunteer effort and relied solely on donations from the community for its collections and operations. In 2008, Indy Pride, Inc. became the primary benefactor of the Library & Archives, and the collection was moved into the basement of the Indy Pride, Inc. offices downtown Indianapolis. The library was open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 6pm or by appointment, and some items in the collection were circulated to patrons. Sources: Materials in the collection. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection is mostly made up of periodicals, clippings and photographs. These items tell the story of LGBT popular culture in Indianapolis and the Midwest mostly from the late 1970s to the 2010s. A separate but related collection within this collection is the Bob and Margaret Green materials, which are made up mostly of video cassettes and photo albums documenting the couple’s attendance at drag shows and competitions mostly in Indiana, but also in Ohio and Georgia over the span of about 20 years. Series 1 contains all the major periodicals collected by the Gonzalez Library over the years, the majority of which are Indianapolis publications The Word, The Works and The Mirror. They are arranged in the collection guide in alphabetical order by title. Series 2 contains clipping subject files collected on issues in the LGBT community, including civil rights, marriage, AIDS, religion, violence, and pop culture. Series 3 contains brochures, poster advertisements, flyers, correspondence, certificates, awards, DVDs, and some artifacts from various LGBT organizations in Indiana, including Indiana Cares, AIDServe, the Diversity Center, the Bag Ladies, Pride festivals, and the Men’s and Women’s Choruses. Series 4 contains the contents of the Ernest Rumbarger files. Rumbarger was an editor at the New Works News and was also a painter. This series contains some examples of his artwork as well as his research and work on the New Works News, particularly on alternative medicine treatments for AIDS. Series 5 is a miscellaneous series containing many buttons advertising different events and organizations as well as flyers and brochures for various bars and clubs, health information, relationship advice, and local theater. Series 6 is the Bob and Margaret Green Collection, referenced above, with the video cassettes and albums of drag shows. Series 7 contains U-matic tapes from Gay TV, an Indianapolis based cable-access television show founded by Greg McDaniel, mostly from 1990-91.
