The Tokugawa Art Museum Special Exhibition The Hina Doll Festival of the Owari Tokugawa Family 2021 From February 6 (Sat.) to April 4 (Sun.), 2021 Organized by The Tokugawa Art Museum, Hōsa Library-City of Nagoya and The Chūnichi Shimbun The dolls and doll accessories that were made to order for the princesses of the Owari Tokugawa family have been passed down to the Tokugawa Art Museum and all of them boast a high quality that is befitting the most senior rank of the three branches of the Tokugawa family. Another highlight is the collection of Meiji, Taishō and Shōwa–era displays overflowing with dolls and accessories and reaching as much as two meters high by seven meters wide. Here, we introduce this world of the Doll Festival reaching heights of luxury and elegance achievable only in such a household of the daimyō elite. The Tokugawa Art Museum's Hina Doll Collection Yūsoku-bina of Lady Kane-hime The Tokugawa Art Museum has a large hina doll collection. The most gorgeous sets of dolls belonged to Lady Kane-hime (1831– 1902), who married the 14th Lord of Owari, Tokugawa Yoshikatsu (1824–1883), at the age of 19. It was customary for a daimyō's daughter to bring her hina dolls with her when she married into another daimyō family, so Kane-hime’s dolls were passed down in the Owari Tokugawa family and eventually came to the Museum. Yūsoku-bina (two sets of hina dolls and five gagaku musicians) All of Kane-hime’s hina dolls belong to the category of yūsoku-bina. -

From Ieyasu to Yoshinao
2021 Summer Special Exhibition From Ieyasu to Yoshinao The Transition to a Powerful Pre-Modern State July 17 (Sat.) - September 12 (Sun.), 2021 INTRODUCTION Striving through the sengoku (Warring States) period, Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) finally achieved the unification of the whole country. Yoshinao (1601-1650), the ninth son of Ieyasu, was assigned to govern the Owari domain during the era of peace. The two were father and son, yet they lived in contrasting times. Yoshinao, who inherited a large fortune of assets and texts from Ieyasu, established the foundations of the Owari domain and led Nagoya to prosperity. Focusing on the principles of their rule, passed down from Ieyasu to Yoshinao, this exhibition traces their lives, their administration, and Yoshinao’s feelings towards Ieyasu, as observed in historical documents and inherited objects. Part 1 Tokugawa Ieyasu, Toyotomi Family, and Tokugawa Yoshinao [ Exhibits Number: 1-42 ] Exhibition Rooms at Hosa Library [Section 1] Ieyasu during the Age of the Warring States: the Eve of Yoshinao’s Birth This section deals with the dramatic changes that occurred in the latter part of Ieyasu’s life, spanning the battle of Nagakute in 1584—in which Ieyasu and Nobukatsu (the second son of Nobunaga) fought Hideyoshi after Nobunaga’s death in 1582, Ieyasu’s subsequent vassalage to Hideyoshi, and the battle of Sekigahara in 1600. [Section 2] Yoshinao during the Age of the Warring States After the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi on the 18th of the 8th month of 1598, Ieyasu increasingly came into conflict with Hideyoshi’s heir, Hideyori, and his vassals of western Japan, led by Ishida Mitsunari. -

Tokugawa Yoshimune versus Tokugawa Muneharu: Rival Visions of Benevolent Rule by Tim Ervin Cooper III A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Mary Elizabeth Berry, Chair Professor Irwin Scheiner Professor Susan Matisoff Fall 2010 Abstract Tokugawa Yoshimune versus Tokugawa Muneharu: Rival Visions of Benevolent Rule by Tim Ervin Cooper III Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Mary Elizabeth Berry, Chair This dissertation examines the political rivalry between the eighth Tokugawa shogun, Yoshimune (1684‐1751, r. 1716‐45), and his cousin, the daimyo lord of Owari domain, Tokugawa Muneharu (1696‐1764, r. 1730‐39). For nearly a decade, Muneharu ruled Owari domain in a manner that directly contravened the policies and edicts of his cousin, the shogun. Muneharu ignored admonishments of his behavior, and he openly criticized the shogun’s Kyōhō era (1716‐36) reforms for the hardship that they brought people throughout Japan. Muneharu’s flamboyance and visibility transgressed traditional status boundaries between rulers and their subjects, and his lenient economic and social policies allowed commoners to enjoy the pleasures and profits of Nagoya entertainment districts that were expanding in response to the Owari lord’s personal fondness for the floating world. Ultimately, Muneharu’s fiscal extravagance and moral lenience—benevolent rule (jinsei), as he defined it—bankrupted domain coffers and led to his removal from office by Yoshimune. Although Muneharu’s challenge to Yoshimune’s political authority ended in failure, it nevertheless reveals the important role that competing notions of benevolence (jin) were coming to play in the rhetoric of Tokugawa rulership. -

Focusing on the ruling policies THE TOKUGAWA ART MUSEUM that were passed down from Ieyasu to Yoshinao, HŌSA LIBRARY CITY of NAGOYA this exhibition traces the path of their lives, as well as Yoshinao's feelings toward Ieyasu through their Restoration of the full fifteen-scroll set of the Tokugawa Art personal effects and historical materials. Museum's National Treasure “The Tale of Genji Illustrated <Portrait of Tokugawa Ieyasu Handscrolls” and its remounting to the original handscroll as a Shintō Deity Tōshō-daigongen> format were completed in 2020. Prior to Western influence, pre- modern Japanese society viewed imperial portraits as religious objects for private, commemorative use; only imperial family members and close supporters viewed these portraits. The Confucian notion of filial piety and the Buddhist tradition of tsuizen influenced the production of these commemorative or mortuary portraits. By the Meiji period, however, Western portrait practice had affected how Japan perceived its imperial portraiture. Because the Meiji government socially and politically constructed the ideal role of Emperor Meiji and used the portrait as a means of propaganda to elevate the emperor to the status of a divinity, it instituted controlled public viewing of the images of Japanese emperors. -

Encyclopedia of Shinto Chronological Supplement 『神道事典』巻末年表、英語版 Institute for Japanese Culture and Classics Kokugakuin University 2016 Preface This book is a translation of the chronology that appended Shinto jiten, which was compiled and edited by the Institute for Japanese Culture and Classics, Kokugakuin University. That volume was first published in 1994, with a revised compact edition published in 1999. The main text of Shinto jiten is translated into English and publicly available in its entirety at the Kokugakuin University website as "The Encyclopedia of Shinto" (EOS). This English edition of the chronology is based on the one that appeared in the revised version of the Jiten. It is already available online, but it is also being published in book form in hopes of facilitating its use. The original Japanese-language chronology was produced by Inoue Nobutaka and Namiki Kazuko. The English translation was prepared by Carl Freire, with assistance from Kobori Keiko. Translation and publication of the chronology was carried out as part of the "Digital Museum Operation and Development for Educational Purposes" project of the Institute for Japanese Culture and Classics, Organization for the Advancement of Research and Development, Kokugakuin University.
