Milking the benefits By Rebecca Jenkins In recent years, the industries of regional Australia have been trying to find new and exciting ways of showing the younger generation all the benefits of a career on the land. With the support of Dairy Australia and a growing number of dairy farmers, a fun and hands-on program is becoming vastly more accessible to students nation wide. Cows Create Careers - Farm Module is a senior-school-based program designed to introduce students to the opportunities available to them within the dairy farming industry. What began in 2004 involving only nine Gippsland schools has reached national status, now involving over 180 schools. In 2013, 8,357 students successfully completed the program and support for the program continues to grow. In the Hunter Valley region alone this year, ten schools are involved with Cows Create Careers including Newcastle High School, Morisset High School, Cessnock High School, Tomaree High School, Singleton High School and Francis Greenway High School. How it works is simple. A local dairy farmer volunteers to loan two calves for three weeks of the program to a participating school. With the dairy farmers continuing guidance, the students are shown how to care for the calves one-on-one. For the remainder of the program, students work on presentations, models and other such tasks to gain a greater idea of what being a dairy farmer would involve. Continued on page 10 your local club

MK’s Harder To Tame tour at Muswellbrook RSL By Rebecca Jenkins The dynamic duo of country music, McAlister Kemp return next month to Muswellbrook RSL after an extremely successful sold-out show in 2013. McAlister Kemp is a talented and energetic duo that has literally become colossi of the country music industry in Australia. In less than four years, the pair has not only topped the ARIA charts (both country and mainstream) but they’ve also a Golden Guitar and nominations in both the ARIAs and the APRA awards for songwriting securely under their belts. If that’s not enough, they’ve even begun to receive international interest. During the recent USA Country Thunder Festival in which McAlister Kemp performed with big-leaguers Big and Rich, John Rich himself described the Aussie duo as, “...bad to the bone!” That, coming from one of the biggest global icons of country music is not only a phenomenal compliment but a massive indicator as to how talented and hard-edged McAlister Kemp really are. When it comes to Drew McAlister and Troy Kemp’s national pride, there is a true sense of honesty at the core of it all. Both country raised - Drew was born in Narrabri and raised in Moree and Troy a born-and-bred Kempsey boy - they’ve grown up with an appreciation for the country and its people. Their new album ‘Harder to Tame’ has been described as the ‘biggest, boldest and bravest’ album ever made by an Australian country music act. The tracks themselves show a true connectedness with the real issues of the Australian outback. The lyrics have at their centre a sense of true-blue-collar values, a trademark theme of the pair and what is believed to have earned them their enormously ever-growing fanbase. The album’s title track has already earned number-one status on the charts and been Golden Guitar nominated. The duo speak very enthusiastically of their album, which was also produced by one if the most exciting and sort-after producers in Nashville. McAlister Kemp has become one of the premier-touring acts in regional Australia and with their recent album receiving such high acclaim so early in its release; the tour is bound to be an experience not to be missed! “Due to the fantastic support received from country music fans from all over the Hunter, Muswellbrook RSL Club decided this year to provide more country music entertainment than before,” stated CEO, Daryl Egan. “We are proud to bring to town McAlister Kemp once again, and we also have returning the Sunny Cowgirls in August followed by Adam Harvey and Doug Bruce in October.” The ‘Harder to Tame’ tour is set to hit the Muswellbrook RSL Club on Friday 6 June. Doors open at 7:30pm and tickets are $30 for adults and can be purchased from the club. McAlister Kemp will be supported by the Viper Creek Band. Images: [Above] McAlister Kemp.
