Fundraising by Team Lochie By Rebecca Jenkins It was on the 22nd of November 2013 when little Lachlan Howard found his way into the world. No one could’ve guessed that just five days later, Lachlan would be flown to Sydney’s Westmead Hospital with severe respiratory failure. Lochie’s loving and diligent parents, Luke and Kerry remained by his side every step of the way, but despite this and the Grace Ward medical staff’s best efforts, Lochie passed away at just thirteen weeks old. This prompted a desire within Luke and Kerry to not only keep Lochie’s spirit burning, but give a better chance to other parents who may find themselves in a similar situation. ‘Fundraising by Team Lochie’ is a non-for-profit charity that aims to raise at least $10,000 to go towards new machinery for the Grace Ward at Sydney’s Westmead Hospital and a plaque in memory of Lochie to be placed within the ward. One of their ventures is an upcoming auction and trivia night to be held on the 6th of September at Club Singleton which should prove to be a popular and fun evening! The trivia section of the evening will be hosted by DJ Ray McCoy who is the host of Drive from 4pm-7pm on Tamworth Radio 88.9fm. The questions are generalised which means everybody has a chance of winning the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes towards the end. The Team Lochie auction will commence soon after on the same evening. The prizes for the auction include Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen signed-framed pictures; a Nicolas Cage ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’ framed picture; Matt Shirvington-signed and framed athletic suit; a fully-signed Australian cricket bat; a fully-signed NSW Speed Blitz Blues cricket jersey; 2014-signed / Broncos// Jerseys; a 2014-signed Newcastle Jets Jersey; Champion Surfer Sally Fitzgibbon signed-Roxy rashy; Jimmy Barnes and Cold Chisel-signed memorabilia and much much more! It’ll be a full night of fun and frivolity, with the more serious undertone of helping families in medical need. Doors open at 6pm, with first question at 7pm. Tickets are $30 per person or for larger groups there are tables of ten available with possibility of finger food. Valuing the customer By Rebecca Jenkins Wanting to take the family out to a beautiful location that serves good quality, hearty meals that tantalise the tastebuds at a very affordable price? The perfect solution is located within the family-friendly walls of the Scone Golf Club. The recent change of bistro management has proven to be very successful with a flood of positive feedback being received since Wayne and Linda Mogdon took the helm. The Mogdon’s motto is to “keep the dining experience for families at an affordable price.” This they have certainly achieved! It’s been three weeks since their successful ‘10 main meals for $10 each’ specials menu was introduced, providing patrons with a variety of choices to fill their bellies for only $10 a dish! The value doesn’t stop there, with children under twelve able to eat free-of-charge on Monday and Tuesday nights (conditions apply); a brand new A La Carte menu and future prospects of ‘entertainment while you eat’ on a weekly basis! With plenty of seating, plus an al fresco dining and children’s area along with fantastic personable service - it’s no wonder the Mogdon’s are off to a good start. With a lucrative and well-travelled career that spans 40 years in hospitality that’s taken Wayne and Linda all over the country, one can certainly believe that they know how to treat the customer to a good well-rounded-dining Scone Golf Club Bistro experience. When asked what they enjoyed most about what they do, Wayne replied, “Being able to interact with the patrons and their children NOW OPEN 7 DAYS gives Linda and I the greatest satisfaction, as it seems that we are part of everyone’s family.” With a warm attitude such as this, who could blame any Dinner: Monday - Saturday from 3pm diner for wanting to return for a second helping? ‘An Oily Rag’ Last Wednesday 30 July saw the launch of ‘An Oily Rag’ by Bill Spicer and Brian Dever at the Upper Hunter Regional Library in Muswellbrook. “An Oily Rag traces the history of motor garages and service stations in Muswellbrook over the past 100 years. Various sites have been described together with the owners and staff who may have worked in the various businesses. Sub stories include NRMA which has been operating in Muswellbrook for 86 years (90 years in NSW); Muswellbrook apprentices being trained in the mobile workshop built in a railway carriage; Muswellbrook’s first ambulance for 10 years prior to the official ambulance presence in Muswellbrook; service station providing ‘tuck shop’ services to South Muswellbrook School; service station extensions post-war when the NSW Government controlled building materials - 114 pages over 120 photographs. In a few words, it’s a really good book,” says the author, Bill Spicer. Image: Bill Spicer and Brian Dever authors of ‘An Oily Rag’.

The Remington is top of the food chain By Rebecca Jenkins In the heart of Muswellbrook there’s a dining location that’s broadening its horizons, strengthening its reputation and multiplying its stars. The Remington has not only evolved from a ‘motor inn’ into an officially titled ‘hotel’, but it has also been granted a bona fide four-and-a-half star status! Hardly a surprise when you discover what’s happening within its walls. Over the past few months, The Remington has been working on the experience that they can offer their clientele. A number of changes have occurred that are very unique to Muswellbrook and the Upper Hunter and The Remington show no signs of slowing down. Amongst them is the new wine bar within the restaurant that’s already looking at expanding the drops on offer by twelve- fold, the ever-changing and evolving menu, entertainment, and the introduction of special occasion and corporate dinners. All have proven to be a massive success thus far! The menu is definitely hitting new heights and taking the dining experience to a whole new level. The concept of ‘smoked’ food isn’t a new one. But at The Remington, you’ll soon be able to order dishes such as ‘Oyster 5 Ways’ and other various treats that are literally presented smoking! Also, there’s a few new additions to the breakfast menu including pancakes, waffles and strawberries. Every Sunday after 10am however is when the luxury really begins. A champagne breakfast has been introduced, serving champagne and beer as well as a beautifully-arranged assortment of breakfast goodies. Images supplied courtesy of The Remington. The Remington is top of the food chain Continued from page 6. Luxury is definitely the word to describe The Remington’s dining experience and soon you won’t even need to worry about transport. General manager, Grant Gill has confirmed that the hotel will be running a shuttle bus service that will commence in around four week’s time. Those who pre-book for a small fee will be able to leave their car keys at home and relax for the evening with the new addition of a 12-seater van that will run between a number of selected locations including airport runs. Grant has made it clear that the new and ever- developing changes are designed to allow local residents the chance to relax and have a unique experience. It’s been noted that many customers don’t just stay for dinner, they remain in the wine bar or restaurant for hours on end. The atmosphere, the food and the wine - The Remington Hotel has it all. Soon local businesses will have a little slice of luxury thrown their way too with the soon-to-be-introduced ‘Local Nights’. For $55.00, those attending will be greeted with champagne on arrival and a banquet dinner. It’s also a BYO to allow those businesses represented to show and share their wares. Constantly giving its clientele pleasant surprises and new experiences. The Remington is certainly at the top of the food chain when it comes to dining experiences. The Company will invest more than $180,000 over the next twelve months in local education initiatives that will benefit students from pre-school to high school. Peter Sharpe, NSW Energy Coal Asset president, said the investments demonstrate Mt Arthur Coal’s ongoing commitment to the local community. “Although Mt Arthur Coal is currently undergoing changes to its operations, our commitment to support our host community of Muswellbrook is unwavering,” he said. “Education was identified as a priority by the local community during our Sustainable Communities Project, and we continue to ensure our investments are aligned with those focus areas. “As a result of our recent $100,000 investment in the Warrae Wanni Pathways to School Program and the imminent opening of the $1.1 million Muswellbrook Pre- School Kindergarten expansion, more children than ever will benefit from early childhood education in this area. “Local pre-school children will this year have access to Healthy Harold for the first time as a result of our renewed partnership with Hunter Life Education, which will see us invest $116,000 over three years. “Local high school students, meanwhile, will benefit from our ongoing contributions towards the Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer Foundation, which provides Aboriginal students with the support they require to complete school and continue on to tertiary studies or training,” Mr Sharpe said. In partnership with the NSW Minerals Council, Mt Arthur Coal will also provide local high school students with financial support to complete mining-related university degrees. Muswellbrook High School’s Frederik Mare, Scone High School’s Sophie Dawson and St Joseph’s High School, Aberdeen’s Renee Hirst will each receive $3,500 over the next four years, as they complete their studies. “Knowing that our contribution will allow Frederik, Sophie and Renee to pursue their studies and ultimately embark on a career in the mining industry is an excellent outcome, particularly if their chosen field of work brings them back to the Hunter Valley,” Mr Sharpe continued. “These investments in education ensure local students at all levels get a hand up while contributing to the sustainability of the local mining industry, by encouraging more young people to consider professional careers in mining,” he said.
