An event of traditional beauty By Rebecca Jenkins There once was a time when a flash of tartan or a note from a bagpipe would be deemed as illegal and frowned upon by authorities. During this time, many secretive traditions developed to allow those of Scottish and Celtic heritage to continue to display their pride of their culture. Many of these traditions are still carried out today. The Aberdeen Highland Games is one of the biggest and most revered local events that proudly stockpiles and displays a cornucopia of Scottish and Celtic traditions centuries old. This weekend locals and visitors to the township of Aberdeen will be transported to the Scottish Isles and will have the chance to see The Tartan Warriors battle it out with a traditional Strongman Competition; the ever- popular crowd-pleasing sport of Tug-Of-War (this year being the national titles); take in the soulful sounds of the massed pipe bands and a number of other traditional delights such as The Kirkin’ of the Tartan and the Piping in of the Haggis at the Robbie Burns Supper. To add to this, there will be markets, traditional Scottish food, clan information and memorabilia, children’s entertainment and novelty events. It’ll be a full weekend of highland flinging that is sure to be entertaining for Royal Hotel-Motel Scone

4 - The Entertainer - Thursday 3rd July, 2014 www.facebook.com/EntertainerPublication creative arts Movement in still life - Vanessa Stockard Continued from page 4 The works themselves are remarkable. With their powerful, bold colours and fine balance between chaos and serenity, one can see how thoughts, feelings and everyday life applies to their explanation. Indeed, the method that Vanessa uses is quite sensory and is really captured in her paintings. “I find my own solace in painting the day-to-day things.” says Vanessa, “I pluck fruit and flowers from my garden, placing them immediately, capturing their fresh, fragrant and edible beings.” But it’s not purely the organic element of her paintings that bring them to life. It’s their blending with where they are ‘placed’ in the man-made surroundings that adds to the effect. “The interior textiles, furniture and metallic and porcelain surrounds are not relegated to background but brilliantly executed in their own right of being. My Still-life painting is both a personal refuge and comfort - a meditative exercise.” The majority of Vanessa’s works are mixed media, painted on cotton or wood. This adds yet another depth element to her works, as well as texture. Busy yet calming, they all “portray the physical change and transplantation from the bustling city to the relative cool serenity of the Southern Highlands”, which is where Vanessa resides. There’s a large element of Vanessa’s subconscious inserted into the Still-life’s. Through her own practice of meditation, she’s able to mingle her concept of everyday thoughts and stresses in with the everyday movement. This breathes even more life into her works “The shadows and reflections so carefully rendered in these personal explorations of my inner and outward odyssey are a means of filtering and isolating my own concepts, values and personal reality from the relentless bombardment of external stimuli and inner subconscious chatter.” say Vanessa. When looking at the works and comparing them to ones own everyday thoughts, one can almost translate the visuals and apply them to their own sense of being. The exhibition will be showing from 4th July through to the 31st of August. Located in the thoroughbred, vineyard and coalbolt country of Murrurundi’, the Michael Reid Gallery is the perfect place to house and compliment Vanessa’s works. Desex Your Pet By Dr Peta Gay Railton, Pet Medical Have you ever visited an animal pound or rescue facility? Have you heard the chorus of barking voices, the calls for attention? Imagine the awful task of euthanising those pets who are not lucky enough to find a loving family. And yet it is all so unnecessary! Being one of those poor unfortunates that visits the pounds of the Hunter Valley, I have given this issue a great deal of thought and, I believe, it is a lack of thought amongst pet owners which leads to this problem. It’s so easy to get a pet, however, many of us do not give the matter the attention it deserves. Pets are a responsibility, they require attention and they cost money. No one should get a pet before they take these two points into consideration. There is no such thing as a “free pet”. You need to feed, vaccinate, microchip and, unless you are a breeder and have planned matings with good homes for the progeny, desex your pet. So often we don’t consider the consequences of an unwanted litter. We find litters dumped in garbage bins, on the side of the road, or fobbed off to friends who haven’t given any thought to the time and cost of owning this “free gift”. As a result Parvovirus plagues our dog population and unwanted litters are “free to a good home.” Unfortunately many of these end up in the pound or having unwanted litters themselves. There are many misconceptions about desexing. Men out there you need to know that desexed males are not heartbroken about the loss of their manhood. No testicles, no sex drive and happy at home. I feel its far more cruel to have an entire male who can smell females and is unable to mate. Even worse are those who are not confined to the backyard and are contributing to unplanned pet population. Bitches don’t have to get fat because they are desexed. Do they feed themselves? Desexed bitches need less food so feed them less and they won’t get overweight. Bitches desexed before their first season are very unlikely to develop reproductive cancers, and the incidence of these cancers increases with every season a bitch has. Desexed pets are less likely to fight, to wander and they make better pets. Don’t be a part of the problem, factor in these costs when you decide to get a pet and, please, desex your pet. JULY IS NATIONAL Image: Dr Peta Gay Railton, Pet Medical. DESEXING MONTH Sort trash from treasure Every hour of every day around 23 healthy cats and dogs are killed in pounds and shelters across Australia simply because they have no homes. Please help bring an end to over-population by desexing your pets before they breed. Pet at the tip Medical has joined forces with the National Desexing Network to help. For more information on desexing, please visit www.ndn.org.au. The Upper Hunter will soon have a new, improved space for recycling and upcycling at the Scone Waste Depot. The grant will go towards a shed to house a recovery centre, recycle shop, and an all-weather cover for the existing recycle bays. The recovery centre and recycle shop will provide a space to recover, sort, clean and on-sell household and commercial items, consumer packaging, exercise and sporting goods and other recovered items to ARE YOU STRUGGLING TO MEET THE the local public. Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment, Andrew Stoner, M.P., and Mr. Souris said attendance at the event would help local producers reach potential new customers and secure new contracts. “It is a golden opportunity for our world-class producers of food in NSW to take their range to a wider audience. This is the 30th year of Fine Food Australia and it is Australia’s biggest food and wine show. “1000 exhibits will be on show and more than 30,000 people will attend over four days, including buyers and agents from major markets in Australia and overseas. “Participants at last year’s Fine Food Australia reported that in the six months following the event, between them they created 16.5 new full-time jobs, generated almost $350,000 in sales, and gained new interstate, export and distribution deals as a direct result of their involvement on the NSW stand,” Mr. Souris said. Mr Souris said Bacco’s Bakeries selection in Fine Food Australia was a justified reward for the hard work that had gone into making the company such a local success. “It is always good to see commitment and dedication rewarded and great to see a quality food maker right on our doorstep given this opportunity. “Sixteen NSW companies will be represented on the “Flavours of NSW” stand at Fine Food Australia promoting the best produce in NSW, including olive oil, dairy, jams, nuts, fruit, oils, baked goods, coffee and meat. “NSW Trade and Investment assistance includes exhibit space on the prominently-placed Flavours of NSW stand at the exhibition. Company representatives will also be invited to a marketing and promotions workshop to sharpen their commercial skills in the lead-up to the trade show,” Mr. Souris concluded.

Calves shine a light on dairy careers Over 150 excited students from six schools in the Hunter Valley were awarded completion certificates plus winning competition results to the successful schools participating in the Dairy Australia program – Cows Create Careers which is a national program run in over 200 schools.
