Rising for Alex By Rebecca Jenkins Over 26,000 fans were chanting his name as Alex McKinnon sat in the middle of Hunter Stadium fighting back tears. This past weekend we not only saw The Footy Show hold a live show in Alex’s name at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre, but also the Rise For Alex Round, held in an effort to gather donations for the recovery of inspirational Alex McKinnon. Alex, who is still in rehabilitation after sustaining a massive spinal injury during a round three game in Melbourne, was presented with a $300,000 cheque at half time of the game last Sunday on behalf of FOX Sports, The Telegraph and the Crown Resorts Foundation. This is only the beginning. Over the course of the weekend, through ticket sales, donations, arm bands and various other means, the Rise For Alex Foundation has raised an amazingly mind-blowing further total of $1.1 million thus far! The weekend also saw an overwhelming outpouring of emotional testimonials and verbal support for the NRL star. Names such as Wayne Bennett, Danny Buderus, Andrew Johns and Paul “The Chief” Harrigan. The NRL universe also was privileged to hear Aberdeen’s Darryl ‘Carrots’ Bowen’s song specifically written for Alex in dedication to the journey he has ahead of him with his medical rehabilitation. The Song Alex (Day by Day) was not only well received - the touching lyrics pierced the heart of everyone who listened. Alex was overwhelmed by the response from his fans and peers over the weekend. “It was pretty full on. I was trying to hold everything back, but at the end of the day I suppose my true self came out and there were a few tears but you can’t help that, can you?” he says of his reaction to the support shown to him. “I’m very overwhelmed by the support, I’m very thankful. “ To donate to the Rise For Alex Fund or for more information, head to the website at https://riseforalex.org.au Images: [Front cover] Alex McKinnon. During the video sessions, the orchestral tutors lead the sessions from Opera Australia’s headquarters in Sydney and the Upper Hunter students connect via the Upper Hunter Conservatorium’s video conferencing unit to interact with the tutors and other musicians from around the state in real time. The Opera Australia program was established in 2012 and this year’s program supplements 2013 workshops with musicians from Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and upcoming workshops with musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra. For the Opera Australia experience students will spend three days in Sydney rehearsing with students from around NSW and members of the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra before a final performance in the orchestra pit of the Opera Theatre at the Sydney Opera House. Director of the Upper Hunter Conservatorium, Adam Wills says, “For students contemplating further study of music after high school, opportunities such as the Opera Australia workshop are an integral part of learning, placing students in professional situations and having direct contact with the musicians making up the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. We’re very delighted to be able to offer this to our students.” The students will perform music from Donizetti’s opera The Elixir of Love, which is currently being performed by Opera Australia at the Opera House as part of their winter season. The Sydney experience will take place between Monday 4th and Wednesday 6th August 2014. Murrurundi Photographic Prize 2014

Valley By Zack Phillips On Sunday July 27 dare to enter the Tocal Homestead where it is believed the whole site will come alive with sights, sounds and smells from the past. This will be an old, family-fashioned day out for the whole family filled with fun and memories. Throughout the day, you will experience what life was like back in the past, and you’ll see horses, tractors, old engines working once again around the farmyard. There will be damper cooking in the camp oven, served with cocky’s joy and Billy Tea, as well as warm scones out of the stove. There will also be delicious soup and homemade refreshments available all day. For children and entertainment enjoy cart rides by Bill the Clydesdale. If it’s chilly out, warm up at the blacksmiths forge; along with sheep shearing and calves being fed. Test your luck at the water divining, and you certainly don’t want to miss the cracking whip display. Warning, beware of the bushrangers! The Tocal Homestead will transform and open up at 10am, and close at 3pm. Adult entry is $10; concession $8 and school children are free. You won’t want to miss this event. Image: Tocal Homestead. Security key to saleyards safety Visitors to the Scone and Upper Hunter Regional Saleyards will see several changes being introduced as part of safety initiative works. These works include the construction of a security fence and monitored entry gate system for the truck parking, truckwash and loading ramp areas. Upper Hunter Shire Council General Manager Waid Crockett said the new gate would improve driver safety and security at the saleyards. “The new gate allows for after-hours monitoring of trucks entering this area using the Avdata entry control system,” Mr Crockett said. “By monitoring entry to this area of the saleyards we are able to identify livestock movements, improve driver safety and provide a secure parking area for transport operators.” The new gateway requires transport operators to obtain an Avdata truckwash key which will open the gates for them when the saleyards is unstaffed. Keys can be obtained by contacting Saleyards Operations Manager Steve Kemp at the saleyards. The keys will be operational from 1 August 2014. The security measures, in addition to lighting upgrades around the loading ramps, were funded by a $50,100 federal grant under the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP) in the 2013/14 financial year. “Council is committed to continuing to improve the Scone and Upper Hunter Regional Saleyards, to keep it one of the top ten livestock selling centres within NSW,” Mr Crockett said. “The works have resulted in improved livestock handling and welfare facilities, in addition to improved safety measures for livestock handlers within the yards.” Extensive consultation was held with workers and users of the saleyards, particularly the livestock transport industry to ensure that all works were suitable to their needs and meet current Work Health and Safety and Driver Fatigue Management guidelines. Reviving the devil at Devil Ark By Rebecca Jenkins Australia is known for its diverse range of unique fauna. There’s a wide selection of oddly beautiful creatures that have become the face of our nation to the rest of the globe. Some live in excessive abundance, but sadly others are dwindling out of existence all together. With only 10% of the population remaining, the Tasmanian Devil is one such unique creature that is facing extinction. The race is definitely on to build their population once again in an effort to save the species. Sanctuary ‘Devil Ark’ has become a crucial fighter in this battle against extinction.

It was in 1996 that the first sightings of what is now known as Devil released many little healthy Devils into the wild, with the first being in Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD) appeared amongst the population of November of 2011 and the next batch due for release next year. The Devils in Tasmania. This disfiguring disease spells a death sentence for project is not only successful, but cost-effective. The average annual an infected Devil, but not before the creature is subjected to six months maintenance for a Devil through the Ark program is around $900. Through worth of starvation, dehydration and a slow, painful breakdown of its a zoo program, depending on the zoo, the cost ranges anywhere from internal organs. It’s believed the disease developed due to many years of $4000 to $20,000 per year! Obvious proof that if Devil Ark can produce hunting and land clearing by European settlers. Because of the massive healthy, happy Tasmanian Devils at a minimal cost, than it’s doing a loss of their natural habitat, there was a reduction in numbers and the fantastic job and deserves the ‘Innovation Award’ the project recently Devils were forced into inbreeding due to the ever-shrinking genepool. received from the Zoo and Aquarium Association. DFTD is the only known form of contagious cancer, hence why is has “The award is to recognise innovations towards the care and recovery impacted on the Tasmanian Devil population so significantly. Because of of species.” says ZAA’s Executive Director, Martin Phillips. “People are their somewhat ‘aggressive’ nature during feeding and mating, bites and looking at Devil Ark as a model that can be used for species recovery scratches have made it easy for the disease to take hold. around the world.” Since its appearance, the disease has reduced sightings of the Tasmanian Devil Ark has a very ambitious goal in mind to boost the Devil population. Devil in their natural habitat by 95%! This alarmed the zoo communities They currently have 120 housed at the sanctuary and they are aiming for and in 2006, the initial stages of developing the Devil Ark project came 360 by the year 2016.
