Salih Katircioglu∗ UDK 339.727.22:338.1(560) Original scientific paper Izvorni znanstveni rad FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN TURKEY: AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION BY THE BOUNDS TEST FOR CO-INTEGRATION AND CAUSALITY TESTS ABSTRACT This paper empirically investigates the level relationship and the direction of causality between net foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and economic growth in Turkey by using the bounds test for co-integration and Granger causality tests. Results suggest that both variables are in long-run equilibrium relationship only when FDI is dependent variable under the ARDL (auto- regressive distributed lag) modeling approach. Final investigation in the paper is that economic expansion in Turkey stimulates expansion in net FDI inflows. JEL: C22; C51; F43. Key Words: FDI, Economic Growth, Bounds Test, Granger Causality, Turkey. 1. Introduction The theoretical and empirical literature on the relationship between FDI and economic growth is quite extensive. FDI is often seen as an important catalyst for economic growth (Le and Suruga, 2005). Majority of empirical studies focuses on the effect of FDI on economic growth. Thus, the causal link from FDI to growth has been popular in the relevant literature. However, as also mentioned by Chakkaborty and Basu (2002), the causal link from economic growth to FDI and feedback relationship between FDI and economic growth deserves further attention. So, the direction of the relationship between FDI and economic growth needs to be further emphasized, because, FDI related spillover of knowledge promotes economic growth and economic growth in turn attracts more FDI (Chakkaborty and Basu, 2002). Empirical studies in the literature investigated the FDI – growth nexus such as Le and Suruga (2005), Durham (2004), Borensztein et al.

This article will highlight the potential for resort developments but also the possible downsides. Country Snapshot The Republic of Croatia is a central European and a Mediterranean Croatia country. It borders Slovenia to the west, Hungary to the north, Serbia to the east and Bosnia-Herzegovina to the south. Croatia has a long coastline on the Adriatic Sea, and its borders total 2,028 km. The Location of Croatia HVS International The Potential for Luxury Resort Developments in Croatia 2 Since the end of the war in 1995, Croatia’s economy and tourism have been constantly growing. In 2006, Croatia experienced GDP growth of 4.8% on the previous year.

  • Bay of Piran Or Bay of Savudrija
A Mediterranean Example of Problematic Treatment of Geographical Names: Piranski zaliv (Bay of Piran) or Savudrijska vala (Bay of Savudrija)? Drago Kladnik, Milan Orožen Adamič, Primož Pipan ABSTRACT: The established geographical name Bay of Piran refers to the largest bay in the Gulf of Trieste at the extreme north end of the Adriatic Sea. After the collapse of Yugoslavia and the emergence of independent countries demarcated along the borders of the former Yugoslav republics, the previously undemarcated body of water between Slovenia and Croatia became the focus of a border dispute between the two countries. The name ‘Bay of Piran’ (Sln. Piranski zaliv, Cro. Piranski zaljev) is derived from the Italian name Vallone di Pirano ‘Bay of Piran’, which replaced the Italian name Valle di Sicciole ‘Bay of Sečovlje’ (as well as Ital. Valle di Siciole, Sln. Sečoveljski zaliv) a century and half ago. Since 2000 there have been Croatian attempts to establish the completely new name ‘Bay of Savudrija’ (Cro. Savudrijska vala, Sln. Savudrijski zaliv). This ethos Istria: helps to showcase our region as a year-round destination. Life as it should be 'Life as it should be' is our motto. And whichever time of year you visit our beautiful peninsula, you will be able to take part in a traditional, healthy and sustainable way of life, one governed by seasons which provide a bounty of globally- recognised produce. Our crystal-clear Adriatic offers up the most exquisite, fresh seafood, providing much of the Mediterranean-style diet we consume. Famous too are our rich black and white truffles and fine cheeses, both of which stem from the same beloved terrain and terroir as our wines and olives. Beat the crowds by visiting in springtime, walking down romantic, cobbled streets unfettered by fellow tourists, or arrive in the summertime so the family can take advantage of our beautiful beaches, clean sea and dependable sun- shine. Autumn shows Istria at its best; the weather is good and the sea is still warm enough to swim in, it coincides with harvest time, the arrival of the year's new truffles and the start of the hunting season. Each season Istria has its own cultural calendar, from famous film and music festivals to time-honoured food celebrations.

A total of 136 species were recorded from 252 localities - 69 % of the Croatian butterfly fauna. Five of these from the literature have not been seen again. A full list of the species and localities is given in the appendices. Several species are of conservation interest in Europe - 6 are listed in the European Habitats Directive: Lycaena dispar (Haworth, 1802), Euphydryas aurinia (Rottemburg, 1775), Coenonympha oedippus (Fabricius, 1787), Zerynthia polyxena (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775), Phengaris arion (Linnaeus, 1758) and Lopinga achine (Scopoli, 1763). The habitat preferences of some rarer species are described. Changes in land-use in recent decades have resulted in the loss of meadows - important habitats for many species. An urgent requirement for conservation measures is identified, as well as the need for future surveys. Key words: Lepidoptera, Rhopalocera, Butterfly diversity, Natura 2000, Istria, Croatia. Riassunto breve - Sono stati raccolti i dati di letteratura relativi ai ropaloceri osservati nella Regione Istriana.

Lipovac 7, 10 000 Zagreb, [email protected] Abstract - The distribution of the C. algae/ochsi species complex in Slovenia and croatia was never a target of any systematic survey. Until now, C. ochsi was known only from the Krk island, croatia, while no records from Slovenia or other parts of croatia existed. We carried out a study of these two species in Slovenia and croatia, based exclusively on the examination of the male and female genitalia to gain an insight into the distribution, phenology and altitudinal range of these two species. The results show that C. ochsi is present mostly in the coastal, generally mediterranean and Sub-mediterranean areas of Slovenia and croatia. on the other hand, C. algae is a widely distributed species, present in most parts of both countries, but is less frequent in the mediterranean region. • When Bureaucrats Constrain the Grabbing Hand
WHEN BUREAUCRATS CONSTRAIN THE GRABBING HAND ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCE SUSTAINABILITY IN TOURISM By Sanja Hajdinjak Submitted to Central European University Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy CEU eTD Collection Supervisor: Assistant Professor Dr. Cristina Corduneanu Huci Budapest, Hungary 2017 CEU eTD Collection Declaration I hereby confirm that this dissertation contains no materials accepted for any other degrees, in any other institutions. However, tourism development frequently leads to vast resource degradation as countries struggle to balance demands for growth and sustainability. This dissertation researches why some countries successfully prevent rent-grabbing and ensure environmental resource sustainability, while others waste natural resources by allowing colluding political and business elites to capitalize on significant resource windfalls. Applying resource curse theory to the tourism sector and drawing on the tourism, corruption and veto points bodies of literature, I develop a theoretical framework focused on bureaucratic and political veto points (BVP and PVP). I argue that bureaucratic veto points, including bureaucratic expertise, decentralized spatial planning and stringent environmental legislation, provide protection against rent-grabbing and resource misuse.
