Following global changes, Croatia is experiencing increasing problems due to the introduction of new species that include aliens (due to aquaculture activities and ship- ping) and species from other Mediterranean subregions that are extending their geographic range. This work provides a checklist of introduced species in Croatian waters. A total of 113 species (15 phytoplankton, 16 zooplankton, 16 macroalgae, 44 zoobenthic and 22 fish species) have been recorded in the eastern part of the Adriatic Sea, of which 61 species are alien and 52 introduced, due to climate change. Keywords: Alien species, range expansion, Croatia, Adriatic Sea, Mediterranean Sea. Introduction Considering all major characteristics, three biogeo- graphic regions can be recognized in the Adriatic Sea: a The Adriatic Sea is an elongated semi-enclosed basin shallow northern sub-basin and a deep southern sub-ba- in the Northeastern Mediterranean Sea.

Salih Katircioglu∗ UDK 339.727.22:338.1(560) Original scientific paper Izvorni znanstveni rad FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN TURKEY: AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION BY THE BOUNDS TEST FOR CO-INTEGRATION AND CAUSALITY TESTS ABSTRACT This paper empirically investigates the level relationship and the direction of causality between net foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and economic growth in Turkey by using the bounds test for co-integration and Granger causality tests. Results suggest that both variables are in long-run equilibrium relationship only when FDI is dependent variable under the ARDL (auto- regressive distributed lag) modeling approach. Final investigation in the paper is that economic expansion in Turkey stimulates expansion in net FDI inflows. JEL: C22; C51; F43. Key Words: FDI, Economic Growth, Bounds Test, Granger Causality, Turkey. 1. Introduction The theoretical and empirical literature on the relationship between FDI and economic growth is quite extensive. FDI is often seen as an important catalyst for economic growth (Le and Suruga, 2005). Majority of empirical studies focuses on the effect of FDI on economic growth. Thus, the causal link from FDI to growth has been popular in the relevant literature. However, as also mentioned by Chakkaborty and Basu (2002), the causal link from economic growth to FDI and feedback relationship between FDI and economic growth deserves further attention. So, the direction of the relationship between FDI and economic growth needs to be further emphasized, because, FDI related spillover of knowledge promotes economic growth and economic growth in turn attracts more FDI (Chakkaborty and Basu, 2002). Empirical studies in the literature investigated the FDI – growth nexus such as Le and Suruga (2005), Durham (2004), Borensztein et al.

  • Croatia Maritime Border Dispute
UNDER THE ISTRIAN SUN: NAVIGATING INTERNATIONAL LAW SOLUTIONS FOR THE SLOVENIA- CROATIA MARITIME BORDER DISPUTE CHRISTOPHER M. HARTLEY* ABSTRACT Twenty-eight years after Slovenia and Croatia exited the Federation of Yugoslavia on the eve of its bloody civil war, the two countries are still plagued by a maritime border dispute in the northern Adriatic Sea.1 Given that the countries were not in conflict with each other during the war, and given their similar goals for integration into the greater European and international communities, it is perplexing that they have not been able to resolve this dispute. The Bay of Piran (or, Piran Bay), located in the narrow Gulf of Trieste at the land border of the two countries and having a unique, heavily indented geography, is ground zero of this dispute.2 The pivotal issues are sovereign control of the bay itself and access for Slovenian vessels to international waters, a concept that is foreclosed under traditional law of the sea maritime border principles given the constraints of the bay and Slovenia’s miniscule coastline.3 *Assistant Professor, Department of Law, United States Military Academy, West Point. • Claiming and Crossing Borders: a View on the Slovene-Croatian
https://doi.org/10.5559/di.25.4.01 CLAIMING AND CROSSING BORDERS: A VIEW ON THE SLOVENE-CROATIAN BORDER DISPUTE Renata JAMBREŠIĆ KIRIN Institute of Ethnology and Folklore, Zagreb Domagoj RAČIĆ Knowledge Network, Zagreb UDK: 330.52(497.4:497.5) 339.13(497.4:497.5) 341.722(497.4:497.5):33 Izvorni znanstveni rad Primljeno: 24. 7. 2015. Authors undertake the analysis of border disputes between Slovenia and Croatia as an example of socioeconomic processes typical of the European semi-periphery. The disputes over territorial claims and the acquisitions of Slovenian companies by their Croatian competitors are viewed as complementary processes of claiming and crossing borders, which are based on different notions of (national) sovereignty. The idea of sovereignty as control over territory is transformed and complemented into the notion of sovereignty as national ownership and control over economic assets. Cross-border takeover is thus interpreted as losing sovereignty over the national economy. The dispute over territorial claims has been since 2009 gradually replaced by media-covered business and financial transactions between major national companies (e.g. the case of Agrokor and Mercator). At the same time, borders are circumvented by wider processes of market consolidation and capital accumulation to which EU integration served as a facilitator. This places the issue of physical borders and territorial sovereignty as well as economic sovereignty largely into the symbolic arena.
