RAVAIOLI Zstituto di Geologia Marina Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche 40127 Bologna, Italy INTRODUCTION Most pollutants are known to have a strong tendency to interact with sus- pended organic and inorganic matter. Under certain conditions, the sediments may form deposits, where the sub- stances are stored and/or mineralized and removed from the external environ- ment. Various phenomena may, however, promote a pollutant release from the sediment towards the overlying waters. Molecular diffusion, bioturbation, resus- pension of bottom sediment and pumping due to low-intensity wave motion are phenomena that cause the transport of chemical species through the water-sedi- ment interface. The constituents that are mostly involved in these fluxes are the ones dissolved in the interstitial waters and those weakly linked to the solid. The fine mineral or flocculated sediments, which rapidly settle in the riverine prodelta,24 are the richest ones in easily exchangeable pollutants. On the other hand, the solid matter which sediments after a long transport attains a more stable equilibrium with the pollutants which are dissolved in the waters. The study of the sedimentation and transport processes of the particulate matter and associated pollutants is of great importance to understand the evolu- tion of the marine environmental quality. THE ADRIATIC SEA: GENERALITIES Problems of the open and coastal water pollution of the Adriatic Sea have been the concern of scientists and administrators for some time. Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe OSCE Mission to Croatia News in brief 12 July – 25 July 2006 Prime Minister Sanader visits Serbia On 21 July, Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader paid his second official visit to Serbia, further intensifying bilateral relations between the two countries. Prime Minister Sanader made his first visit to Belgrade in November 2004, followed by a reciprocal visit to Zagreb by Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica in November 2005. Prior to their meeting in Belgrade the two Prime Ministers officially opened the newly renovated border crossing between Croatia and Serbia in Bajakovo, Eastern Croatia. At the ceremony attended by representatives of both governments and the diplomatic corps from Zagreb and Belgrade, the Croatian Premier said that "today we are opening the future of new relations between our two countries." Echoing this sentiment, Prime Minister Koštunica added that both the "Serbian and Croatian governments will work to heal wounds from the past and build a new future for the two states in a united Europe". Later, following talks in Belgrade, both Prime Ministers declared that Serbia and Croatia have a joint objective, to join the European Union, and that strong bilateral relations between the two countries should be the foundation of political security in the region. Prime Minister Sanader commended the efforts both governments had made towards improving the position of minorities in line with the bilateral agreement on minority protection signed between the two countries in November 2004. He went on to stress his cabinet’s wish to see the Serb minority fully integrated into Croatian society. -

The author has already written several studies ahout Bogišic's collection in a more "scientific" way: In this text, M. Roskovie-Stulli follows the paths of her own wanderings and the stories she heard all over Konavle forty, and even more than forty, years ago — she tries to conjure up at least something of the narrators of that time, of the local stories, and of that landscape seen through its legends. Keywords: Croatian oral literature, oral prose, Konavle I feel the presence of Konavle now, to use the words of Villon, as my "snows of yesteryear" — as les neiges d'antan. Born and raised in northern inland regions of Croatia, the encounter with the landscape and history of that Mediterranean rural community near the City of Duhrovnik, everything I got to know and accept in that part of Croatia, was brought home to me in the family circle of my husband, who was born in Dubrovnik, and his relatives. Most of my Konavle narrators — male and female — whose oral narratives are the subject of this article, are long dead or in very advanced years now. Many of the younger ones have probably emigrated and also grown old — and I have never heard from them again. Finally, the war at the beginning of the 1990s: Konavle devastated and destroyed. -

Introduction When the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes – from 1929 Kingdom of Yugoslavia – was formed in 1918, one of its most important tasks was to forge a common collective identity. Intellectual elites in the young state with great optimism agreed that education would play a crucial role in this process. It should come as no surprise, then, that a relatively rich tradition of scholarly research into the representation of collective identities in Yugoslav education has originated, precisely to account for the failure of the Yugoslav project in the long term. Recently, a growing body of scholarly research has established textbooks as one of the more rewarding sources for studying collective identity in education, focusing on ‘what knowledge is included and rejected in ... textbooks, and how the transmission of this selected knowledge often attempts to shape a particular form of national memory, national identity and national consciousness’.1 For the Yugoslav case this emerging research field so far has primarily examined textbooks which were used in the period directly preceding, during and following the disintegration of Yugoslavia.2 However, as the present article hopes to illustrate, textbook analysis can also provide the historian with interesting new elements for the study of collective identities in Yugoslavia’s more distant past. The author inquires into the persistence of understandings that map peoples onto specific territories and terrains, such as the stereotypical association of Italians with the coast and Slavic peoples (Slovenes and Croats) with the rural interior. Focusing on representations of maritime culture along two contentious political borders – that between Italy and Slovenia and that between Slovenia and Croatia – the analysis demonstrates that museums become powerful sites for the reproduction of the coast/interior cultural boundary, even when the specific ethnic groups it maps onto change. Keywords: Adriatic, Istria, borders, maritime culture, museums, representations, stereotypes In The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World in the Age of Philip II, Fernand Braudel famously argued that, at least into the 17th century, "The Adriatic is perhaps the most unified of all the regions of the sea" (Braudel 1972:125).1 In the succeeding centuries, however, the Adriatic has often been imagined as constituting a border zone between culture areas, languages, religions, and environments. CROATIA Promoting social inclusion of children in a disadvantaged rural environment Antun Ilijaš and Gordana Petrović Centre for Social Care Zagreb Dora Dodig University of Zagreb Introduction Roma have lived in the territory of the Republic of Croatia since the 14th century. According to the 2001 population census, the Roma national minority makes up 0.21% of the population of Croatia, and includes 9463 members. However, according to the data of the Office for Ethnic Minority in Croatia, there is currently around 30 000 Roma people living in Croatia. It is difficult to accurately define the number of Roma people living in Croatia because some of them declare as members of some other nationality, and not as Roma. There is a higher density of Roma in some regions of Croatia: Medjimurje county, Osječko-baranjska county, Zagreb, Rijeka, Pula, Pitomača, Kutina, ðurñevac, Sisak, Slavonski Brod, Bjelovar, Karlovac and Vukovar. 1 Roma people in Croatia are considerably marginalised in almost all public and social activities and living conditions of Roma people are far more unsatisfactory than those of average population and other ethnic minorities. The position of Roma and their living conditions have been on the very margins of social interest for years, and this has contributed to the significant deterioration of the quality of their living conditions, as compared to the average quality of living conditions of the majority population. This regards their social status, the way in which their education, health care and social welfare are organised, the possibility to preserve their national identity, resolving of their status-related issues, employment, presentation in the media, political representation and similar issues. -
