Secuencias cronológicas ............................................................................... 85 INTRODUCCIÓN os trabajos publicados en este libro se derivan de las conferencias magistrales presen- tadas durante el XI Congreso de la Red Centroamericana de Antropología, el cual tuvo lugar en la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR), Ldel 27 de febrero al 3 de marzo del 2017. Esta fue la segunda vez que el Congreso de la Red se realizó en la UCR, ya que veintitrés años atrás, del 3 al 7 de octubre de 1994, se celebró el primero de ellos denominado Centroamérica ante el cambio global: identidades, etnicidad y violencia. Desde el primer congreso, la Antropología se había desarrollado sustantivamente. En Costa Rica, se creó la Comisión del Posgrado en Antropología el 12 de mayo de 1995 y en marzo de 1998 comenzó la primera promoción; el 8 de enero del 2008 la Escuela de Antropolo- gía empezó a funcionar como unidad académica independiente al separarse de la unidad anterior, la Escuela de Antropología y Sociología. A partir de marzo del 2014, la Escuela de Antropología contó con nuevas y amplias instalaciones para laboratorios y áreas para el personal administrativo, docente y estudiantil en el nuevo edificio de Ciencias Sociales en la Ciudad de la Investigación. El crecimiento permitió trabajar de manera más sistemática 8 en la propuesta de crear un centro de investigaciones antropológicas, cuya aprobación por parte del Consejo Universitario de la UCR fue confirmada en marzo del 2017. Bajo ese contexto, se valoró oportuno que los representantes ante la Red Centroamericana de Antropología, de la Escuela y del Posgrado en Antropología de la UCR, con el aval del rector Henning
