It reduces mobility, slows economic growth, and is a major cause of emissions. Vehicles traveling at slow speeds emit significantly more pollutants than vehicles traveling at free flow speeds. It is therefore important to determine the extent of congestion in a city, and its impact on the environment. This thesis focuses on congestion in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area. Mexico City is one of the largest cities in the world, and faces severe levels of congestion and emissions. Although much of the transportation trips are made by high capacity modes such as buses and colectivo microbuses, a growing population and increasing automobile ownership rate will further exacerbate the city's mobility and environment. -

Roberto Matta (1911-2002)
ROBERTO MATTA (1911-2002) Roberto Sebastian Matta is a Chilean surrealist painter. Multilingual and a tireless traveller, he had a profound influence on his contemporaries, especially on Abstract Expressionist artists and he also rubbed shoulders with artists of the Cobra movement. BIOGRAPHY In the summer of 1939, Matta stayed at the Château de THE YEARS OF TRAINING AND EARLY TRAVELS OF Chemillieu in the Ain département, rented by his friend THE CHILEAN PAINTER the painter Gordon Onslow Ford. Many of the solutions suggested by planners and consultants from developed countries are both expensive and require a substantial time investment before the benefits can be realised. Turner II Note from the editors This book is the fourth in a series from the United Nations University (UNU) research project, Critical Zones in Global Environmental Change, itself part of the UNU programme on the Human and Policy Dimensions of Global Change. Both endeavours explore the complex linkages between human activities and the environment. The project views the human causes of and responses to major changes in bio- chemical systems – global environmental change broadly defined – as consequences of cumulative and synergistic actions (or inactions) of individuals, groups, and states, occurring in their local and regional settings. The study examines and compares nine regional cases in which large-scale, human-induced environmental changes portend to threaten the sustainability of an existing system.
