It reduces mobility, slows economic growth, and is a major cause of emissions. Vehicles traveling at slow speeds emit significantly more pollutants than vehicles traveling at free flow speeds. It is therefore important to determine the extent of congestion in a city, and its impact on the environment. This thesis focuses on congestion in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area. Mexico City is one of the largest cities in the world, and faces severe levels of congestion and emissions. Although much of the transportation trips are made by high capacity modes such as buses and colectivo microbuses, a growing population and increasing automobile ownership rate will further exacerbate the city's mobility and environment. -

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Station and train surface microbiomes of Mexico City’s metro (subway/underground) Apolinar Misael Hernández1, Daniela Vargas-Robles1,2, Luis David Alcaraz3 & Mariana Peimbert 1 ✉ The metro is one of the more representative urban transportation systems of Mexico City, and it transports approximately 4.5 million commuters every day. Large crowds promote the exchange of microbes between humans. In this study, we determined the bacterial diversity profle of the Mexico City metro by massive sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. We identifed a total of 50,174 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and 1058 genera. The metro microbiome was dominated by the phylum Actinobacteria and by the genera Cutibacterium (15%) (C. acnes 13%), Corynebacterium (13%), Streptococcus (9%), and Staphylococcus (5%) (S. epidermidis; 4%), refecting the microbe composition of healthy human skin. The metro likely microbial sources were skin, dust, saliva, and vaginal, with no fecal contribution detected. A total of 420 bacterial genera were universal to the twelve metro lines tested, and those genera contributed to 99.10% of the abundance. The annual 1.6 billion ridership makes this public transport a main hub for microbe-host-environment interactions. Finally, this study shows that the microbial composition of the Mexico City metro comes from a mixture of environmental and human sources and that commuters are exposed to healthy composition of the human microbiota. Public transport systems provide the ideal environment for the transmission of microorganisms, as they carry a multitude of passengers, and their microbiomes, daily. Te metro can assemble an extensive repository of bene- fcial bacteria, such as commensals and symbionts, or harmful bacteria, becoming a vehicle for the transmission of infectious diseases. -

Ma. del Carmen Bernárdez de la Granja Mail: [email protected] RESUMEN Existe en la Ciudad de México, como en otros lugares, una tendencia que ha protagonizado las revitalizaciones de espacios públicos realizadas en los últimos años, se trata de la peatonalización de calles o avenidas. Dicho tipo de intervención es, definitivamente impactante en cuanto que modifica determinantemente el uso y percepción del espacio. La constante insistencia por la necesidad de revitalizar el Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México ha provocado, además de una evidente transformación de imagen urbana, otras mutaciones en el espacio urbano, cambios muy evidentes de carácter social, espacial y económico principalmente. Lo que aquí se presenta, es un análisis de éste tipo de intervención, realizada en la calle Francisco I. Madero, arteria vital del centro histórico, que cerró el tránsito vehicular en 2010 para priorizar el acceso exclusivamente peatonal al centro de la ciudad; los impactos generados a partir de éste suceso, principalmente en el ámbito comercial. Palabras clave: Centro Histórico, Revitalización, Peatonalización ABSTRACT In Mexico City exists a trend, as in other places, that has played a main role in the revitalization of public spaces in recent years: the pedestrianisation of streets or avenues. Such an intervention has an important impact since it crucially modifies the use and perception of space. Constant insistence for the need to revitalize Mexico City's Historic Center has caused, in addition to a clear transformation of urban image, other important mutations in the urban space, mainly of social, spatial and economic nature. -

Representing a shift away from this, in recent years, many countries in Latin America have adopted Intercultural Bilingual Education, promoting Indigenous Peoples’ rights to education in their languages and respective to their cultures. Mexico in particular, establishes Intercultural Bilingual Education as a right of all Indigenous Peoples in various laws and the Constitution of Mexico City protects this right for its Indigenous population. This study investigates the extent to which Indigenous Peoples’ rights to education, as outlined in international human rights instruments and reinforced in Mexican law, are implemented in Mexico City, accounting for its growing urban Indigenous population. Through semi-structured interviews with government officials as well as with directors and teachers from a public primary school in Mexico City, this study illustrates the role the state and educators play in the implementation of Intercultural Bilingual Education. The findings presented in the study suggest the significance of Indigenous Peoples and educators in this process, in comparison with the Mexican government, whose improved measures can help increase urban Indigenous students’ access to their education rights. -
