Signed: ____________________________ Date: ________________________ Bokyoung Kim 2 Abstract A Study on Korean Monolingual Learner’s Dictionaries for Foreign Learners - Focusing on Grammatical Information This thesis explores how to improve grammatical information provided by the Learner’s Dictionary of Korean which is the first Korean monolingual learner’s dictionary for foreign learners in order to help advanced learners of Korean produce their language accurately. In it I analyse whether the information of the dictionary is appropriate and on what principles the information is presented focusing on five selected items, which advanced learners find most difficult to use in their production. In order to look at the characteristics of target users, I gathered data using both a questionnaire and interviews as well as undertaking a dictionary compiling project. Furthermore, I built up user profiles for Korean monolingual dictionaries used for encoding activities. I then analysed advanced learners’ production based on a learners’ corpus which I designed for my research and selected five main items which learners had difficulty in using in their production. The findings show that the Learner’s Dictionary of Korean provides a considerable amount of grammatical information in various ways according to the characteristics of each item. However, there is still room for improvement in terms of the contents and presentation of the dictionary. Firstly, I recommend that when the dictionary describes a certain item, the dictionary should also deal with other items which it commonly occurs with as a pattern or phrase rather than separately. Secondly, it is necessary to compare the different function and usage of words using example sentences or syntactic codes which are often substituted incorrectly for each other in usage notes of the Learner’s Dictionary of Korean. Thirdly, there needs to be greater consistency in choosing the list of headwords and describing grammatical information.     894 Lunar New Year The lunar New Year, known as 561, W6ndan, W6ni! or Cbongch '0, is one of the most important holidays in Korea. During this holiday, there are traffic jams throughout the country as people rush to see their family and relatives. On the morning of Lunar New Year, people don traditional dress (hanbok). Various foods and wine are prepared, and then set in front of an ancestral tablet. The table is meticulously arranged according to Confucian tradition; however, many families also have their own traditions governing details of the arrangement. In general, fish is put on the east, meat on the west, fruit in front, rice and soup behind and liquor on the front table. A ceremony is then held during which the male family members pay respect to their deceased ancestors up to the fourth generation by making three full bows. Family members also visit the graves of their deceased ancestors. On this holiday, after cutting the grass from around the grave, they make a simple offering and then bow three times. In addition to paying respect to the deceased, each family member is expected to make two formal bows to his or her elders. According to custom, the elders then give the person a gift of money, particularly if the person is a child. Special foods are prepared for this holiday. In particular, rice-cake soup is typically served instead ofrice. For this reason, the question 'How many bowls of rice-cake soup have you eaten?' is sometimes used to ask one's age. In North Korea and China, mandu (dumpling) soup is often eaten instead.

In recent. months North Korea has begun what appears to be a deliberate series of provocations against South Korea in the offshore waters northwest of the port of Inch'on.     Language and Family Dispersion: North Korean Linguist Kim Su-gyŏng and the Korean War Ryuta Itagaki, Doshisha University Abstract This article analyzes the unpublished memoir of Kim Su-gyŏng (1918–2000), a linguist who was active in North Korea from the mid-1940s until the late 1960s, and situates his account of his experience of the Korean War within the context of his linguistic essays and correspondence. In doing so, the article considers the role that the personal and the social play in language, utilizing Saussure’s theoretical framework, with which Kim himself was well versed. Kim wrote his memoirs in the 1990s to his family, from whom he had become separated during the Korean War and who now lived in Toronto. In this text, he writes in “personal” language that reveals his uncertainty and his feelings for his family, but then immediately negates these feelings through the use of “social” language, which resonates with his interpretation of the linguistic thesis that Josef Stalin developed during the Korean War on language and national identity. For Kim, the relationship between language and nation was not at all self-evident, but something that he idealized in response to the dispersal of his family. By offering a reflexive reading of a memoir written by a North Korean linguist, this article makes a breakthrough in the investigation of North Korean wartime academic history, which has not risen above the level of analyzing articles in the field of linguistics that were published at the time. Truman Presidential Library and The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars’ North Korea International Documentation Project Dear Participant The North Korea International Documentation Project (NKIDP) is pleased to present you with this “document reader,” which is intended to facilitate and enrich the discussion at the June 16-17 conference “New Documents and New Histories: Twenty-First Century Perspectives on the Korean War,” held at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library in Independence, Missouri. The volume consists of select Russian and Polish archival documents that we hope will provide context for discussion on the Korean War as we mark the 60th anniversary of the conflict. The collection, compiled by NKIDP is by no means comprehensive, however, in selecting the materials, the editors sought to include some of the most important materials available and made a substantial effort to mine relevant official archives. The document reader is organized chronologically, starting with March 1949 and ending in April 1954. In compiling these documents, the editors received much appreciated cooperation and assistance from scholars from several countries, reflecting the multinational scope of this project. NKIDP is particularly grateful to Jakub Poprocki for contributing documentation from the Polish Foreign Ministry Archives and Dongkil Kim for contributing new Russian documents.

    Can China Back Down? Can China Back Kai Quek and Down? Alastair Iain Johnston Crisis De-escalation in the Shadow of Popular Opposition Many pundits and an- alysts, both inside and outside China, claim that public sentiment is an impor- tant driver in China’s coercive diplomacy in the East and South China Seas. They argue that China’s leadership faces potential domestic instability arising from ethnic unrest, socioeconomic inequality, environmental degradation, and a slowing economy. The regime therefore has an interest in pursuing tough ex- ternal policies, as variants of diversionary conºict theory might suggest. More- over, owing to socialization into the “Century of Humiliation” narrative (namely, that China was bullied by stronger imperialist powers from 1840 to 1949), the Chinese public reacts angrily to any hints of government conces- sions on territory and sovereignty issues. Public opinion, therefore, can create the worst of all worlds for Chinese leaders’ ability to control the escalation of conºicts. It explains coercive external behavior that could give rise to milita- rized crises, but it also limits the regime’s options to de-escalate once mil- itarized crises have broken out. We are not yet convinced that the potential for domestic political unrest can fully explain China’s maritime behavior over the last decade. The top leader- ship exercises considerable control over ofªcial media messaging. It sits on a massive coercive apparatus, consisting of internal security services, a paramili- tary, and the military. Moreover, it does not face elections. Thus, other factors may be at work as well—among them, a reaction to activities of other contend- ers in the East and South China Seas that Beijing perceives as challenging its deªnition of the status quo distribution of territory; an increasingly intense se- curity dilemma with the United States; organizational interests being pushed Kai Quek is Assistant Professor of Politics at the University of Hong Kong.
