Dear IBA Membership, This is your official invitation to one of the greatest gatherings in the state of Iowa! May 9-11, 2019, at the downtown Marriott in Des Moines, the 92nd Bandmasters Conference will welcome vendors, band directors, honor bands, guest conductors, parents and some amazing clinicians! Well over a hundred individuals have been working to prepare this event…just for you! See if you can relate to any of the following questions: Do you have a student struggling to accomplish good tone? Does your ensemble need to address intonation? Need ideas how to approach sight-reading with your ensemble? How can I pace my rehearsal to accomplish more? Can technology assist with more of my goals?

These are just a few of the topics addressed at this year’s conference. Highlights include: • Scott Lang will present on Recruitment & Retention and Avoiding Burnout • Interlochen Woodwind Trio will perform a concert/clinic and individual instrument clinics • Dr. Paula Holcomb from State University of New York at Fredonia will share conducting tips • Dr. Glen Flanigan from Asbury College has ideas on sight-reading and individual practice • Patrick Sheridan will present tuba basics with a great sense of humor! • Lalo Davila will share world percussion techniques in addition to percussion grip suggestions • Cormac Cannon plans to present on planning rehearsals and rehearsal techniques • Several amazing jazz and marching band clinics!

THANK YOU, again and again, to the membership of IBA, for allowing me to be a part of planning this year’s conference. The struggles we encountered were easily resolved through the assistance of emails, phone calls, texts, and meetings with board members, colleagues and family members. It was worth every moment for the continuation of a fantastic event and organization. Compared to many associations, we are more progressive and focus on what is best for students. IBA has many things to be proud of in these challenging days in our schools and society. Meanwhile, keep up the good work in your classrooms. Be patient and kind. Our students are worth it. Be patient and kind. Remember, we set the tone in our band rooms for every student that passes through the doors. Building up our students means building up our world’s future.

“We have the power to tear down or build up the children who walk into our lives every day.” – Todd Nesloney

The Iowa Bandmaster 3 President-Elect’s Thoughts By Jayson Gerth

Community The feeling of community in our profession is strong, and that’s a good thing. Teachers who feel as though they are connected and supported by friends and mentors who “get it” are far more likely to be happy and successful than those who are out there feeling alone and isolated. Community drives us to “better- ness.” Community makes our lives more joyful; it cushions the inevitable bumps that come our way. Positive, communal connections help make us stronger teachers. We want to belong. We want to matter. Being together in community is a natural expression of those desires.

School bands and the concept of community go hand-in-hand. A “band” is defined as a group of people with a common interest or purpose. (Interestingly another definition: “a herd or flock” is also appropriate). Many of us pride ourselves on the inclusive band community we create in our schools, and actively seek ways to grow and expand it. As Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser has said, “You play ON a sports team, but you play IN a band.” From the first note to the last downbeat, everyone contributes, everyone has a role to play. Positive connections in community with our students help create islands of safety and security in which they can both express themselves, growing into confident musical artists, and take refuge from the turbulence of growing up in this day and age. The IBA is such a community. Our association is a community of people who care deeply, work tirelessly, sacrifice much, and give freely. It is this sense of community, and the effects that reverberate from it, that I believe is at the root of our longevity and success. Through its many activities and initiatives, the IBA supports the work of all of us. It advocates for our collective needs. It supports mentoring for our individual members. It encourages and inspires us by sponsoring great performances, and it feeds our desire to learn by presenting one of the finest annual state conferences in the country. This issue of The Iowa Bandmaster magazine is dedicated to the 2019 Conference. President Triplett has put together a fantastic two and a half days of learning, and I personally cannot wait to spend my time walking the exhibits, attending clinics, enjoying concerts, and networking with my friends from every corner of Iowa. Be sure to pour over this issue and make your plans to attend. This will truly be a wonderful professional development experience. Last May, we sent a survey asking for your feedback regarding the 2018 conference. As reported in our summer meeting and work session, the survey was generally very positive. A key takeaway in the survey’s comments section (and the reason I began this article by writing about community) was the frequent reference to networking. The comments were both positive about the opportunity to network, and (understandably) negative about the lack of space to get together with colleagues. (The hotel will not be under construction again this May, by the way.) It’s clear that the vast majority of you feel the same way about this community as I do! In addition to the incredible opportunity for professional development and inspiration, our annual conference is a huge celebration of community and our commonalities. It is a time and place where old friends reconnect and new professional relationships start. It is an opportunity to elevate our knowledge, stimulate our musician’s soul, commiserate about our struggles, invigorate our passion for teaching, and celebrate our belonging to the “world’s finest bandmasters organization.”

The Don Bosco Percussion Ensemble starts every year at the conclusion of the marching season and continues through the remainder of the school year. Seventy- five percent of the students in the ensemble are not percussionists, but are wind players from the band that just want the enjoyment of learning about percussion instruments and the enjoyment of performing in another ensemble in a different setting. Even though the ensemble enters the Perry Band Olympics and State Solo and Ensemble Contest each year, it also performs at other non- competitive events such as the Iowa Days of Percussion Convention each year and the annual winter and spring concerts at Don Bosco. The group averages between 14 - 16 members each year and rehearses twice a week for an hour from 6:30a.m. - 7:30a.m.

The jazz program performs three concerts a year where they perform four tunes each in a variety of styles. Both groups also partake in the SEIBA Jazz Festival. Every year the final concert features a guest artist (usually a professor or professional player) that performs with both groups. Both groups are non-auditioned and stress inclusion while maintaining traditional jazz instrumentation, allowing several students to play a second instrument. The NW Jazz philosophy is grounded in learning jazz style and history, while giving every student the opportunity for improvisation, all in a positive and enjoyable environment. The Jazz Band last performed at IBA in 1993. The program for our performance will primarily be selected from the following: Flight of the Foo Birds by Neal Hefti, arr. Peter Blair; Horsepower by Fred Sturm; Jericho arr. by Chris Sharp; Latin Quarter by Lennie Niehaus; Mystic Traveler by Michael Sweeney; Night Shot by Doug Beach; Opus One by Sy Oliver, arr. by Jerry Nowak; Ran Kan Kan by Tito Puente, arr by Rick Stitzel.

SWIBA CANDIDATE - NICHOLAS BAHR Nicholas Bahr attends Glenwood High School and enjoys participating in the band program and tennis. He works as a part-time table busser at Castle Unicorn, a wedding and reception business. Nick has participated in many musical school activities. He is a member of the Glenwood High School drumline and is their section leader. He also is in concert band and has participated in Glenwood’s Jazz A Ensemble for three years, starting his sophomore year. In high school, Nick made the district honor band every year: 2nd chair snare freshman year, 1st chair snare his sophomore year, and 2nd chair snare his junior year. As a junior, Nick tried out for All-State and was selected at a 1st Alternate for percussion. As a senior, Nick was selected as the All-State percussionist representing Southwest Iowa in the All-State Band. Nick has also been a part of the Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band his sophomore year and senior year. This year, Nick is also a member of The Railmen Indoor Percussion as a vibes player in the front ensemble. Nick is pursuing a degree in music education as he enjoys learning and encountering new music everyday. He also enjoys spreading his knowledge to others to help them enjoy music and grow in their skills.

NWIBA CANDIDATE - CARLY DRENTH Carly Drenth lives in Alta, IA with her parents, Clay and Sue Drenth, and older brother, Cole. Carly is a senior at Alta-Aurelia High School where she has been involved in various extra- curricular activities throughout high school including cross country, musical, dance, jazz band, speech, play, track and student council. She is a student of band director Corbet Butler and has received private clarinet instruction from Nikole Nuttall since 2012. Carly has been very musically involved throughout her high school career. She was selected to participate in the IHSMA All-State Music Festival all four years of high school on clarinet; her freshman year she was chosen for the orchestra, and her junior year she earned the honor of being principal chair in the band. She has also received first chair in the NWIBA Honor Band all four years of high school. Because she was a winner of the Young Artists Competition, Carly performed as a featured soloist with the Cherokee Symphony Orchestra. She has played with several ensembles during her high school career such as the Sioux City Youth Symphony, Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, NWIBA Honor Orchestra, Buena Vista University Concert Band, and Karl L. King Municipal Band. In addition to clarinet, Carly is also an accomplished player and was selected for the 2016 and 2018 1A-2A Iowa All-State Jazz Ensembles. As a junior, she received the Outstanding Soloist Award at IHSMA Solo/Small Ensemble Festival for both her clarinet and saxophone solos. Carly’s future plans include attending either The University of Northern Iowa or Drake University and majoring in instrumental music education and clarinet performance.

SEIBA CANDIDATE - KRAIG LEAHY Kraig Leahy is a senior at North Scott High School who enjoys spending his time listening to various styles of music, analyzing songs, and transcribing solos from the legends of jazz like and Duke Ellington. He participates in several ensembles outside of the school programs and teaches percussion lessons to students at North Scott Junior High. As a percussionist, Kraig performs on most of the instruments in the percussion family, and has grown attached to the piano and any keyboard instrument. He is the principal percussionist in North Scott’s Symphonic Band, and is first-chair piano in the jazz program. He has twice auditioned and been accepted to the SEIBA honor band and was recently accepted as first alternate spot for the Iowa All-State band. In his high school solo career, he has earned multiple “I” ratings. Kraig believes that “music is what makes the world go round. When you are the focus on a stage, where people sometimes pay to see you play, it gives you an emotion that no one could ever describe to you in words. This experience is something I want everyone to feel at some point in their lives. I want to help kids or young adults experience and fall in love with music the same way I did.” Going to college and majoring in music education is the first step toward achieving this goal.

SCIBA CANDIDATE - KATHRYN MEUNIER Kathryn Rose Meunier, daughter of Jacquelyn Rose Meunier and Robert William Meunier, was born on April 12th, 2001, in Des Moines, Iowa. She now lives in the small town of Pleasant Hill, Iowa. Currently, Kathryn is a senior at Southeast Polk High School. She plans to attend Drake University in the fall of 2019 to major in Music Education and

70 The Iowa Bandmaster Music Performance. Most of Kathryn’s time is spent doing homework, practicing both french horn and piano, or spending time with family and friends. She works part time at Toad Valley Golf Course and spent a few weeks the summer of 2018 working for Borst Detasseling. Kathryn is in the top 4% of her class, ranked 17 out of 513 students with a weighted G.P.A. of 4.236. She has been awarded an Academic Letter and the Lamp of Knowledge for her achievements, and was inducted into the National Honors Society. In music, Kathryn has been equally successful. She has received many honors and awards for her fench horn performance. She was the first student in the history of Southeast Polk High School, vocally or instrumentally, to receive the honor of being accepted to All-State all four years of her high school career. She has also been accepted to numerous honor bands and achieved the honor of playing principal horn in the Des Moines Youth Symphony. At her school, she participates in all three of their top music ensembles which include the Southeast Polk Wind Ensemble, Jazz 1, and Chamber Singers. She served as drum major of the Southeast Polk Marching Band during sophomore, junior, and senior year. Along with horn, Kathryn has also shown her skills on piano by placing first at her district’s Iowa Music Teachers Association (IMTA) Competition in 2017. She continued on to the State Competition within the following months and was named Honorable Mention out of 17 other pianists from her level. Since she was born, Kathryn has loved music. From the time she began playing french horn, she knew she wanted to be a musician when she grew up. Over time, she has watched her parents teach, as both are band directors, her mother at Southeast Polk High School, and her father at Drake University, and admired them. She has taught 5th and 6th graders french horn lessons, along with mentoring other horn players at her school and enjoyed every minute of it.

NEIBA CANDIDATE - MAKAYLA RASMUSSEN Makayla Rasmussen attends Waterloo West High School and participates in music and theater. Makayla mentors incoming freshmen as a member of West High’s Link Crew, and she volunteers for the West High National Honor Society. Makayla serves as a part-time waitress at the Landmark Commons Retirement Home, and she contributes to her church by playing piano on the worship team and serving at the church’s coffee house. Makayla played the alto saxophone in Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Two. Makayla is now playing the bassoon for her second year in Wind Symphony, and first year in Symphony Orchestra. She is also playing piano in Jazz One for the second year. Makayla participated in the NEIBA Honor Band in 2017 on the alto saxophone, and is participating in the NEIBA Honor Band on bassoon this year. Makayla has been in the Wahawk Marching Band for four years. She played the alto saxophone, marimba in the front ensemble, and Makayla is concluding her last two years of high school as a drum major. Makayla’s love for music stems from the positive infuences of her directors, friends, and her band community. Music is constantly changing, and Makayla enjoys the idea that there will always be an infinite amount of opportunities to learn and challenge herself with music. There is not one way to play all music because every ensemble, every piece, and every instrument is up for interpretation. Makayla would like to contribute her passion to keep the music education industry alive. She believes every student should have the opportunity to find what they love to do, and as many programs are being cut, Makayla wants to infuse her positive infuence into her students to give them that chance. She wants to give her students the same, if not, better experiences than she has had, and Makayla hopes her passion for music education will have that impact.

NCIBA CANDIDATE - EMILY WILLADSEN Emily Willadsen is from Jewell, Iowa and attends South Hamilton High School. She enjoys participating in band, choir, piano, speech, plays and musicals, National Honor Society, student council, cross country, and studio dance. She is also very active in the youth and music ministries at Saint Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames and enjoys being a Hospice volunteer. For the past two summers, Emily has worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor at the Bedell YMCA of the Okobojis. Music has been an important part of Emily’s high school experience. She has grown as a musician and leader by being a drum major, choir president, section leader, by giving lessons, and by accompanying the choir on piano and fute. She has been chosen to participate in the All-State band, honor bands, honor choirs, and jazz band, as well as has received Division I ratings at solo/ ensemble contest and a Best of Center Award for her fute solo. In addition, Emily has taken piano lessons for twelve years and is a four-time IMTA Pre-College Audition State Finalist. Emily is pursuing a degree in music education because she is extremely passionate about music and wants to share her love of music with others. From an early age, she has always enjoyed music, teaching, and serving others -- weather it be teaching swim lessons, drama classes, or music lessons. Since music is her main passion, becoming an instrumental music teacher is her dream.

Treasurer’s Report: (Prior to the meeting, committee members received the most recent financial statements via email.) EF Treasurer Ohrlund presented his report. EF Treasurer’s report APPROVED (Welch – motion, Teutsch – second)

3. Endowment Fund Budget: The proposed 2019-20 Endowment Fund budget of $8,710.00 was presented by EF Treasurer Curt Ohrlund. The proposed budget includes a contribution from the Dean Fund in the amount of $1,000.00 in support of concert bands and/or chamber music for the 2020 IBA Conference. EF 2019-20 budget of $8,710.00 was set. (Welch – motion, Teutsch – second) APPROVED There were several items of discussion and reminders relative to requests from the IBA Board of Directors and the Endowment Fund budget. a) As recommended by the IBA Board of Directors, the Endowment Fund Committee agreed, by teleconference on September 1, 2019, to contribute $1,000.00 in support of the 2019 All-Iowa Concert Band Festival (for one year only) and $3,750.00 towards the of commission of an original piece of music to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Iowa All-State Music Festival. The payment schedule of $3,750.00 in support of the commemorative commission will be determined at a later date. b) Chairman Gross reminded the Endowment Fund Committee members they approved a request for $3,000.00 from Leon Kuehner, Executive Director of the Iowa Alliance for Arts Education in support of the IAAE mentoring program. The donation from the EF is a matching contribution to the $500.00 from each of the six IBA Districts and was supported by the IBA Board of Directors. Vote and approval by the EF Committee was by email and conducted November 19-20, 2019. EF Treasurer Ohrlund was directed by Chairman Gross to send the donation in the amount of $3,000.00 to Leon Kuehner. c) Chairman Gross expressed concern about the effect on the Endowment Fund of an increase in the number of requests for financial support made in recent years. A current example is that from May of 2018 to May of 2019, the Endowment Fund Committee will have provided over $17,750.00 in support of Major Landers, State Conferences, IAAE, and the All-Iowa Concert Band Festival. Committee members requested that the Chair compose a statement to identify concerns, seek input and approval from the Committee, and communicate concerns to the IBA Board of Directors. 4. Major Landers Trophies: Chairman Gross proposed the Endowment Fund pay for the cost of Major Landers trophies. The EF will play for the cost of Major Landers trophies up to $150.00. (Aboud – motion, Teutsch – second) APPROVED 5. Endowment Fund Portfolio Review: Financial Advisor, Wayne Jacobson, reviewed the portfolio of investments held by the IBA Endowment Fund. Although 2018 was a challenging year for equities, bond funds held in the Endowment Fund minimized the downturn in equities. Mr. Jacobson recommended no changes in investments. EF will maintain investments balance. (Welch – motion, Ohrlund – second) APPROVED 6. Contingency Fund Review: CD #22 held in the Veridian Credit Union as part of the Risk Contingency Fund, matures on 2.16.19. Chairman Gross reported that $1,330.00 had been donated to the Endowment Fund as memorials to Dorothea Dean. Gross shared that Robert Dean was a clarinet player but proud to say he studied horn with Max Pottag, In addition, both Dean daughters were all-state horn players. Gross suggested the Endowment Fund Committee consider donating the $1,250.00 recognizing the clinic being sponsored in memory of Dorothea Dean. (Aboud – motion, Teutsch – second) APPROVED
