These included the following: ABOVE AND BEYOND AWARD The Board presented an Above and Beyond Award to Dr. Patricia Green for her receipt of the “Spirit of Unity” award earlier this month. KEYSTONE AWARDS The Keystone Awards were presented to 11 of our schools that achieved Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in their buildings. Mrs. Grosheider called the meeting to order at 8:08 p.m . and all stood and recited The Pledge of Allegiance. CALENDAR AND AGENDA Mrs. Grosheider explained that prior to the meeting, the Board had a celebration of awards and recognition including the Keystone Awards and Distinguished Achievement Awards. She reviewed the Agenda for this meeting and the Calendar for January and February 2011. There are no presentations scheduled for tonight’s meeting. At the January 26, 2011 meeting, the Board will hear a presentation on the proposed Preliminary Budget for the 2011-2012 year. On February 16, 2011, the Board will again be having Distinguished Achievement Awards and will be hearing an update on the Human Resource Report. At that meeting, the Board will also vote on the Preliminary Budget. On February 23, 2011 at their Regular Voting Meeting, the Board will be presented with an update on the Demographic Analysis and Feasibility Study and they will be hearing a Strategic Plan Update. The Board will not be meeting in Executive Session at the conclusion of the meeting SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNITION Mrs. Grosheider explained that January is School Board Recognition across the state as proclaimed by PSBA and the Board will be honored with entertainment by some of our students. Dr. Green said the School Board Recognition is done to remind the citizens within the Commonwealth that School Boards are locally elected and they are volunteers who serve their local Work Session January 19, 2011 Page 8 communities to make great things happen. She mentioned that this year’s theme for the recognition is “Taking Flight for Academic Achievement in Public Schools.” She noted that this School Board is a pre-eminent model of the highest aspirations

    H H H Trumpeter TONY BELLETTI is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts UA Concert Jazz Band degree in tumpet performance with a minor in jazz studies at the University of and UA Experiential Ensemble Arizona. He attended California State University, Long Beach from 2010-2017 and earned a bachelor’s degree in performance along with his master’s degree in music performance. During his time in Long Beach, Belletti studied with various professional trumpet players such as Dan Fornero, Wayne Bergeron, David Washburn, Ryan Darke, Rob Schaer and Rob Frear. He also worked closely with a small trumpet ensemble at Long Beach which found success at the National Trumpet Competition in 2014 and 2017 winning 3rd and 2nd in the Small Ensemble Division. Belletti also contributed his talent to three CDs with the Concert Jazz Orchestra, which received the 2015 Downbeat Student Music Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Jeff Jarvis.     ‘Between The Rock and the Commonwealth’ to be featured at the Rivers Edge Film Festival Nov. 1, 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MOREHEAD, Ky.---Morehead State University's Steven Middleton, instructor of mass communication and Kentucky filmmaker, has had his documentary “Between The Rock and the Commonwealth” selected for inclusion into the 2017 Rivers Edge Film Festival in Paducah, Nov. 3-5. The Rivers Edge Film festival is Kentucky’s longest running film festival. The film details the controversial removal of Indian Head Rock from the river in 2007 and the ensuing legal battle between Ohio and Kentucky about ownership rights. The film was coproduced by convergent media graduate John Tanner Blevins with video assistance from John Flavell, MSU instructor of journalism, and audio engineering from Dr. John Modaff, MSU professor of speech. First described in an architectural publication of the 1840s, Indian Head Rock originally sat in the Ohio River roughly 60 feet from the Kentucky shoreline near South Shore. Prior to being submerged in the 1920s, when dams raised the river level, the rock had been a gathering point for generations of visitors, many of whom carved their names or initials into its face. In 2007, the rock was removed without permit by a local historian, who donated it to Portsmouth. A legal battle over the rock’s rightful place soon erupted, gaining national attention via outlets, including National Public Radio, CBS News and The New York Times. Byers All of Me is a jazz standard written in 1931, first sung by actress-singer Belle Baker and later recorded by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Lester Young, Erroll Garner, and many others. The melody is mostly based on a circle-of-fifths progression, although the harmony cleverly evades resolution until the end of the form. Billy Byers’ arrangement of “All of Me” was for the Count Basie Orchestra, legendary for its ˘ irresistible, relaxed swing feel, lightness, precision, and expressive contrast. After the first statement of the melody, the pianist has room to solo. Better Days Ahead ...........................................Pat Metheny arr. Lindsay The Pat Metheny Group was begun in 1977 by guitarist Pat Metheny and pianist Lyle Mays. Metheny’s style of guitar playing was very different from anything that had been heard before, partially as a result of his friendship with virtuoso bassist Jaco Pastorius. The two focused on the unexplored melodic possibilities of their respective instruments rather than solely emphasizing playing good accompaniment. Metheny is also renowned for incorporating many diverse styles and instruments (such as synthesizers) into his compositions. Better Days Ahead is the third track from the group’s album Letter From Home, which was released in 1989. Both Letter From Home and their previous album, Still Life (Talking), are in the jazz fusion/crossover jazz genres, combining elements of Brazilian music with traditional jazz. This song has an upbeat, irregularly phrased melody, and features the piano, the guitar, and the bass on solos.
