3 TTheThhee BeBeginningginningginnininning 1177 plaplayererss parpart of many firsstststs inin CSICSI SoftballSoftball The first signee, the first hit, the first homerun, the first win - this year’s Golden Eagles will record plenty of firsts in CSI’s inaugural season of softball. The first they are striving for is first place in the Region 18 race. CSI head coach Nick Baumert knows that will be difficult with a team filled with first-year players and inexperience. Still, the enthusiasm and dedication shown so far will carry the Eagles. The young talent should give CSI a shot at competing. “All 17 players are committed to carrying on the CSI tradition in athletics,” Baumert said. “We know it won’t be easy and there will definitely be highs and lows. This is as competitive bunch as I’ve coached in my career. They compete in practice every day. Now we need to learn how to carry that to the field every game.” The Golden Eagles are led by two sophomores - Belinda Turley and Jalena Williams. Neither has collegiate softball experience but they bring a maturity to the field that should help early. A second-baseman, Turley played for Baumert in high school and under- stands his system. Williams, a third-baseman, understands the league. The standout helped CSI to the national champion- ship game as a freshman and then earned all-conference honors as a sophomore on the basketball court. Now she wants to make her mark on the softball field. “Those two players will be key to our success early,” Baumert said. “They are both very athletic and very coachable.” Joining them in the infield will be Katelynn Warren and Rachel Evans at shortstop, Candice Benard at second, Breht Montgomery at third and Sarah Haney at first base. “We’re very deep in the infield,” Baumert said. “We have three pitchers that can play first base as well as a catcher that plays third. The players that battle at the plate will be the ones that earn spots in the field.” Anna Sorrell anchors the Golden Eagles at the catcher position. Joining her there are Lauren Kurtenbach and Jenna Volgamore. “They each bring a different strength to the position,” Baumert said. “By the end of the year, they should make each other better. How our pitchers do is a direct reflection on them.” In the circle, Baumert can look to four different players for four different looks. Jody Zillner brings the most heat. Stephanie Holmes throws a heavy ball that moves a lot, while Desi Thomson throws a nasty changeup. Lacey Bowman knows how to mix it up and works well in relief. “Learning how to compete every pitch has been the toughest learning experience for our pitchers,” Baumert said. “It’s not like high school where you can go 0-2 on a kid and then blow a pitch by them to strike them out. The hitters at this level are too good so you have to be smart. Once they learn that, they will be very tough.” The Golden Eagles have lots of speed in centerfield. Both Rochelle Noren and Ali Spear can run. With both crucial to CSI’s success at the plate, Spear will play some right field. Rounding out the outfield is Jamie Stone. Pitchers Thomson, Holmes and

4 Bowman as well as shortstop Rachel Evans also will see some time in the outfield. “The key to our success in the outfield is communication and aggressiveness,” Baumert said. “Once Ali and Rochelle gain experi- ence, I expect them to be two of the best in the league.” With Dixie leaving the league to go NCAA Division II, the Region 18 race is wide open. North Idaho returns the best pitcher in the league, while Salt Lake is always tough. Snow will be solid again and Southern Nevada boasts 11 sophomores on its team. Colorado NW rounds out the six teams competing for the league title. “It makes coaching fun when every weekend counts,” Baumert said. “I don’t think there is a clear favorite in conference play so as we grow as a team, we should be right there battling with the rest of them.” The Golden Eagles will play all of their games this season at the Twin Falls High School softball fields. Work has begun on CSI’s home field and should be finished for play this fall.

5 Nick Baumert 1st Season

Nick Baumert begins his first season as the College of South- ern Idaho women's fast-pitch head softball coach. Not only is it his first season, but the program's first season as well. Baumert, who began recruiting and building this team last spring, said he is honored to be the one selected to start a new program at the college. "I consider CSI the best junior college in America," Baumert said. "This is a dream job for me. To be a part of the CSI family is really special." Baumert, who coached at Twin Falls High School from 1999- 2005, led the Bruins to a 159-46 record during that time. From 2002-2005, Courtney played profes- sionally in Japan. She was named league MVP in 2002 and led her team to the Japanese League Championship. Courtney and her husband David live in Sun Valley. They are expecting their first child in March.

“Not only is Courtney an incredible pitching coach, but even more a great person. She has been able to bring real life experience to our team and teach the players what it takes to improve every day. Her competitiveness is contagious.” - Nick Baumert

As a junior and senior, she was named Region III Co-Player of the Year. After leading Highland to a third-place finish at state, Becky played one year at Yakima Valley CC.

21 Bringing in the Best

Twice a year, CSI Softball puts on a camp and brings in top notch clinicians. This winter the Golden Eagles welcomed U.S. Olympic catcher Stacey Nuveman, along with former U.S. National Team players Courtney Dale and Julie Adams. Current U.S. Men’s National Team pitcher Cody Thomson also worked the camp. For more information on upcoming camps, visit www.csi.edu. Click on athletics and then softball. Select the camps link. As each camp is scheduled new information will be updated.

24 Our number one goal for student-athletes at the College of Southern Idaho is for them to experience hi gh qual ity education while participating in and enjoying the challenge of Division I junior college basketball. The ultimate bonus, of course, is graduat- ing from a quality institution that has prepared them for a career after athletics. The CSI Athletic Department is committed to providing students all the support and encouragement they need to find success both in academics and athletics. The college provides unlimited resources through its student services to assist student-athletes in the class- room. Students will enjoy the benefits of attending a private study table for softball, as well as the use of the Academic Development Center, and tutoring is provided as needed. Most importantly, student- athletes have the support and friendship of the coaches, their team- mates and their academic advisor. The best of everything is possible at the College of Southern Idaho. 25 Jerry Beck

Gerald L. Beck began his career at the College of Southern Idaho in 1975 and became president of the college in 2005. His many titles at the college include Instructor, Coordinator of Trade and Industry Programs, Dean of Continuing Education/Summer School, Vice President of Instruction, and Executive Vice President/Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Beck is an Idaho native. He received his bachelor’s degree in Technical Education, his master’s degree in Teacher Education, and his Ed. D. in Adult Education from the University of Idaho. He completed his post doctoral at Harvard University Institute for Educational Management. In addition to his duties at the college, Dr. Beck is a member of the Twin Falls Rotary Club, and is a board member of the State Workforce Development Council appointed by the Governor. He serves as a board member on many local organizations including Southern Idaho Economic Development Organization, Region IV Development Association and Magic Valley Regional Medical Center. He is past president of the Idaho Association of Private Industry Councils. Dr. Beck and his wife, Barbara, have three adult children and three grandchildren. He attributes much of his success to the opportunities provided by the college and the support from his family and co-workers.

Joel Bate

Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate begins his first year at the helm of Golden Eagle Athletics. Bate, who has been teaching in the English Department since he arrived on the CSI campus in 1993, gives up teaching in the classroom to work with student-athletes and coaches on a daily basis. Bate, 46, said he is excited for the new ch allenge. “I will miss teaching English but I think those skills I’ve used as a teacher are very transferable to this new position and the knowledge of the academic side of campus also will be a strength in seeing the complete vision of the student-athlete,” Bate said. “It gives me a rounded perspective of what our mission is. Having been a coach, it gives me an awareness of all that is involved in being a student-athlete and the challenges that both coaches and players have in going through a season.” Bate said he is excited to work with all associated with CSI athletics. “I think we have great coaches and a great staff here and the work they’ve done this year has been very positive, not only on the court but in the classroom and community as well,” Bate said. “I’m looking forward to working with our many boosters, fans and corporate sponsors who have helped make CSI a special place to be.” Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Golden Eagles to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled a 144- 78 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic All-Americans. Two players went on to play professional basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors. Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball, track and basketball, where he compiled a 114-32 record and four third- place state finishes. Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the University of Idaho in 1986. Bate and his wife Donna and three children live in Twin Falls.
