We are very excited to be hosting this unique event for the fifth consecutive year. Aviation has a rich history in the state of Ohio. Since the Wright brothers’ first flight in 1903, we have continued to make significant strides in the aviation industry here in the Buckeye State. We are thrilled to welcome you to Columbus this week to continue to build a foundation in aviation. SAFECON’s emphasis on education, communication and safety will provide you with tremendous learning opportunities and the necessary training for a successful future in the industry. I hope you enjoy your time here, and best of luck in this year’s competition! Sincerely, Michael V. Drake, MD President The Ohio State University 6 | SAFECON 2017 SAFECON 2017 NIFA May 09, 2017 Dear SAFECON 2017 Competitors: Welcome back to Columbus and to The Ohio State University for the 69th NIFA National SAFECON competition! This is the 10th time The Ohio State University’s Don Scott Field has served as host to this outstanding event, and we’re pleased to continue building upon this tradition. We are, as always, honored to have you as our guest. We at Ohio State are committed to being leaders in all that we do, and we also aim to inspire leadership in others. The SAFECON competition exemplifies this same philosophy, providing an arena for showcasing student aviators’ dedication to air safety, academic excellence and the highest standards of performance. Global air travel and transport continue to grow at an unprecedented pace, and the demand for skilled fliers has never been greater or more important. It is an especially exciting time in aviation locally as well. Ohio State is celebrating the 100th anniversary of flight at the university, and as you look around this week you will see the beginnings of significant public and private investments in Don Scott Field that will take our flight education and aviation research to the next level. I commend you for earning an invitation to compete in SAFECON. Whether you realize it or not, you are exhibiting leadership through your rigorous training, your unwavering commitment to flight safety and your achievements to date. In whatever aviation career path you choose, I urge you to remain focused on these qualities and to continually pursue excellence within the classroom, in the field and beyond. On behalf of the The Ohio State University’s College of Engineering, the Center for Aviation Studies and OSU Airport, I wish you all the best of luck in this year’s competition. I look forward to watching you compete, lead and learn. Sincerely, David B. Williams, Ph.D., Sc.D Monte Ahuja Endowed Dean’s Chair Executive Dean of the Professional Colleges Dean of the College of Engineering 7 | SAFECON 2017 SAFECON 2017 NIFA May 09, 2017 Dear SAFECON 2017 Competitors: On behalf of The Ohio State University Center for Aviation Studies, welcome to SAFECON 2017! 2017 is a special year for us here at Ohio State Aviation. This year we’re marking the 100th anniversary of aviation education and research at Ohio State and the 75th anniversary of The Ohio State University Airport, Don Scott field, your home for this week of competition. We’re honored that you’re here to share these anniversaries with us. Much has changed over the years, both at Ohio State, and in collegiate aviation. Your aircraft have become more technology advanced, as have your planning tools, as have your communication tools! I encourage you to share your experiences at SAFECON with our community through your various social media channels. Our environment is beginning to change here at Ohio State Aviation, as well. You may see some new construction on the east side of the field with new hangar development, for example. Soon, we will be constructing a new corporate terminal and aviation education center, hopefully within which we’ll host future SAFECONs. Should you experience any construction related activities or other issues during your time here, please let us know so that we may make your experience as enjoyable as possible. While some things change, others stay the same. We, as you, are still highly focused on safety and professionalism. I trust that you will maintain vigilance and practice safety to the highest levels, and that you will demonstrate your professionalism, for you are the future of our industry. We at Ohio State are proud of each and every one of you. Have a tremendous week and best of luck in the competition. Seth Young, Ph.D., A.A.E., CFI McConnell Chair and Director Center for Aviation Studies The Ohio State University 8 | SAFECON 2017 SAFECON 2017 NIFA May 09, 2017 Dear SAFECON 2017 Competitors: Welcome to NIFA SAFECON 2017. I can assure you that our host, The Ohio State University, has planned an extremely rewarding and safe event this week. Plus, The Ohio State University’s airport and campus facilities are second to none! As this is my sixth national SAFECON as Executive Director of NIFA, I am extremely honored to be here with all of you! I am planning on retiring at year’s end. I have to tell you that, although I obtained my Private License very early during my senior year at Davidson, I was never a collegiate aviator like all of you are. I had a chance, once, to alter my collegiate endeavors. An Auburn aviation student picked me up once while I was hitchhiking from Greensboro to Davidson; he gave me the complete rundown on the Auburn Aviation Program, but I never made the switch! My mistake, for sure. I spent 33 years with Executive Jet and NetJets. Hired over 600 Ohio State graduates, most of which were Aviation Program Graduates. When I departed NetJets, 22 out of the 40 Vice Presidents were Ohio State graduates. It is extremely gratifying to see that the nation’s collegiate aviators are truly facing multiple job opportunities. You must all take advantage of the current “aviation climate,” as it will not last forever! So, I urge you all to “make the rounds” at SAFECON 2017. Meet your fellow competitors; meet the NIFA judges & volunteers and meet all of the Sponsor representatives. The relationships that you make here at SAFECON 2017 could ultimately be your aviation career’s “ticket to the future!” And, please fly safely all this week and carry on this great tradition! Sincerely, Richard G. Smith, III Executive Director 9 | SAFECON 2017 SAFECON 2017 NIFA May 09, 2017 Dear SAFECON 2017 Aviators: Welcome to Columbus, Ohio and congratulations on behalf of the Center for Aviation Studies at The Ohio State University for putting in the hard work and long days to make it to the 2017 Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference! All of you represent the Nation’s most skilled collegiate aviators, and believe me, all the work that you have put into being here is exhausting but beyond worth it! You have come from all over the United States to Don Scott Field to represent your school, collegiate aviation, and the skill that you have learned both in the air and on the ground.
