He is a seducer who wins hearts and minds thanks to his powerful language”, is how the Salzburger Nachrichten described Menasse’s book Der Europä- ische Landbote. He travelled to Brussels for the book research where he discovered that hardly any of the usual clichés about fossilized Eurocrats were accurate. In his essay with echoes of Georg Büchner, Menasse called for nothing less than “the invention of a new, post-national democracy”. In cooperation with the political scientist Ulrike Guérot, he wrote the mani- festo describing the founding of a European republic. They have since constantly raised awareness based on their visionary ideas: they advocate no borders, rights for refugees to build their own towns in Europe and the reconstruction of the free world. European Literature Days Themes 2016 The Colonizers Symposium Part 1 An African country – how is it portrayed by a European novelist and an "The Colonizers" African writer? Similarly, how is India described in a European novel and an Indian writer’s work? In Patrick Deville’s novel, Peste et Choléra Fri, 4 November, 9:30 (“Plague and Cholera”), which was introduced at the European Literature Schloss zu Spitz, Renaissancesaal Days 2015, the French writer refers to a dynamic of 19th century European Free accreditation for the symposium at colonization which also concerns writers and literature. The ‘Europeani- [email protected] zation’ project in the name of progress inspired explorers, researchers, scientists as well as travel writers and adventurers to set off for suppo- sedly unknown terrain. Writing about their ideas of foreign cultures they get caught up in the process of colonization. They were followed by the military and merchants who conquered the land. Their ‘Europeanization’ finally ushered in chaos. Following the colonial powers’ race for world domination from 1860 until the present-day, travel writers also shape the image of cultures outside Europe. From Joseph Conrad and Andre Mal- raux to Hubert Fichte and Bruce Chatwin, in each case they have enriched and expanded the literature of their countries of origin. Is this true for writers today in our globalized world? How can their different approaches foster clearer insights about the world? European Literature Days Themes 2016 What Creates Interest? Multiple offers from [email protected] competing media aim to attract the readers’ attention. Many people re- gard the book world as a closed environment, which is at best accessible to writers and readers, but this universe has so many distinct planets without fixed connections that orbit around a target audience. The 2016 Diversity Report follows up current developments by reviewing translations of literature in Europe. During the last decade which writers and books were successful outside their original language contexts? What boundaries are identifiable? What is changing? Do literary awards still influence the economy of interest? What about self-published authors and their books? In their Diversity Report 2016, Rüdiger Wischenbart and his team ana- lyzed 250 writers in a dozen European countries. They considered basic conditions and market circumstances; they reviewed literature and literary translations in the wider context of a book market, which is basically in flux, and a reading culture that reacts to a multiplicity of media offers. In Symposium Part 2 the core statements from the Diversity Report 2016 will be used as a basis of the discussion with the team of writers. Reviews Th inking Europe politically Claudia Wiesner, University of Marburg Review of Robert Menasse, kursiivilla der Europäische Landbote, tavallisella Paul Zsolnay Verlag, Vienna 2012, ISBN 978-3-552-05616-9 My most pressing thoughts after having read Robert Menasse´s book were “Oh wow, this made me think!”, and: “why is it that a writer has written such a book and not an academic?” I believe that this latter aspect tells us something decisive about the state of the art of the debate on the future of democracy in the European Union, and also on the state of the art of the academic debate on this topic. Let me explain this further: I read Menasse´s book because I was invited to participate with the author in a public discussion on the topic of “Europe in Crisis”. As the state of democracy in the EU and its multilevel system is one of my main research fi elds, and also because I am a concerned pro-European, I accepted the invitation with pleasure, read the book, and took part in the discussion. What happened was not only that we had a very fruitful discussion, but also for the fi rst time in all of the interventions on the topic of democracy in the EU in which I have been involved over the last years. Th is time I was in the role of the sceptic, saying things like “we must see this in a more diff erentiated way…”. I had been expecting this, but I had still consid- ered myself an imaginative political scientist with a strong interest in the topic.

  • Holocaust Postmemory, Subjunctivity and Futurity in Katja Petrowskaja’S Vielleicht
Forum for Modern Language Studies Vol. 56,No.4,doi:10.1093/fmls/cqaa026 Advance Access Publication 23 October 2020 MOMENTS OF POSSIBILITY: HOLOCAUST POSTMEMORY, SUBJUNCTIVITY AND FUTURITY IN KATJA PETROWSKAJA’S VIELLEICHT ESTHER (2014) AND ROBERT Downloaded from https://academic.oup.com/fmls/article/56/4/406/5937248 by guest on 28 September 2021 MENASSE’S DIE HAUPTSTADT (2017) MARIA ROCA LIZARAZU ABSTRACT This article examines subjunctive approaches to history and memory as a novel aesthetic and ethical mode of Holocaust (post-)memory in two promi- nent examples of contemporary German-Jewish fiction. I argue that Katja Petrowskaja’s Vielleicht Esther (2014) and Robert Menasse’s Die Hauptstadt (2017) develop subjunctive modes of Holocaust (post-)memory as a response to a crisis of witnessing in the post-survivor era. Faced with the dying out of the survivor generation and the increasing institutionalization and hyperme- diation of Holocaust memories, these two authors invoke the subjunctive to self-reflexively account for their historical positionality and critique mono- lithic memory discourses (Petrowskaja), while also aiming to (re-)invest a stagnant culture of Holocaust memory with political urgency and futurity (Menasse). Subjunctivity thus emerges as a central yet underexamined mode of contemporary German-Jewish writing which has the potential to trans- form wider cultures of Holocaust (post-)memory, by moving ‘beyond the traumatic’ (Rigney 2018)inthedirectionoffuturity. • An Hymn to the Bureaucrats in Brussels
A hymn to the bureaucrats in Brussels Who are these EU bureaucrats, the new type of civil servants that we call eurocrats? The author Robert Menasse flew to Brussels, rented an apartment and tried to get to know as many of them as possible. The outcome surprised him. Amongst all monsters, from basilisks to Dracula through to King Kong, civil servants stand out because their imaginary presence is not merely the product of fear and excitement in the bourgeois mind, visions of menace and disaster repeatedly conjured up in order to be able to fantasise about an ultimate lucky escape, but really a fantasy of society as a whole: the image of the civil servant is a projection of all social and professional classes' prejudices. Civil servants are said to be privileged yet as other-worldly as decadent aristocrats; as indolent and pig-headed as the petty bourgeoisie; as rule-obsessed as shop stewards and yet as workshy as any member of the underclass; narrow-minded and yet as sly as foxes (and for whom rules and regulations are Holy Writ); in thinking up nonsense they are as creative as the businessmen who cunningly engineer the needs which they claim to be meeting and, like immigrants, obsessed by the idea of procreating wildly at the taxpayer's expense. It is astonishing how successfully this artefact, this fictional construct haunts the collective imagination without ever falling apart in the light of reality. After all, everybody has actually met a civil servant whereas they haven't met, say, Dracula and, what is more, if you correlate the percentage of civil servants which make up the adult population with the average size of a family, then the statistics dictate that two out of every three people must have a father, uncle, aunt, sister, father-in-law or at least one close relation working in the civil service.

Seminar: The Road to Brexit: British Discourses of Europe Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Ina Habermann Podcast Contribution, Author: Stefan Bongers Novel: Robert Menasse: Die Hauptstadt. [Translation by Jamie Bulloch]. Berlin, Suhrkamp 2017. Great Britain and the EU from a European Perspective – Robert Menasse’s Novel Die Hauptstadt Author: Robert Menasse’s Die Hauptstadt — The Capital — which won the German Book Prize in 2017, is a major novel about the European Union. Events, fittingly set for the most part in Brussels, revolve around an ill-fated jubilee project. A Public Relations campaign has been set up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the European Commission, designed to increase the reputation of this institution with the public. Significantly, in this context, the jubilee is in fact the brainchild of a British official, Mrs Atkinson, newly appointed director-general of the directorate General Communication of the European Commission. Atkinson studied marketing and management at the European Business School in London and got her position because of the female quota: Speaker: “She herself had benefited from the policy, and – as she said – she could openly admit this without putting in question her qualification for the job.“ Author: Atkinson was preferred over her British rival, George Morland, who is unable to cope with the fact that a woman got the position he was aiming for. He tells everybody that Atkinson is the perfect example for the idiocy of the quota and that she Speaker: “ (…) was such a cold woman that she suffered from freezing hands, which was why she always sat at her desk wearing an enormous muff.

Images of the Second World War in Austrian Literature after 1945 Abstract The author examines selected examples of post-1945 Austrian literature, asking what pictures of the Second World War they imparted and what role they played when, certainly from 1948 on, a certain image of history began to take shape in Austria against the background of the Cold War. This image involved a fade-out in particular of the racist nature of the war, and it had a collectively exonerating and distorting impact. Attention is paid to the stories and novels of former participants in the war and National Socialists, such as, for example, Erich Landgrebe, Erich Kern, Hans Gustl Kernmayr, Kurt Ziesel.

Council of the European Union General Secretariat NEW BOOKS FEBRUARY 2017 Library and Research Dear Readers, Welcome to the February 2017 list of recent acquisitions at the Library of the General Secretariat of the Council. We are issuing this list on a monthly basis (sign up by sending us an e-mail to: [email protected]). Personal diplomacy in the EU: political leadership and critical junctures of European integration / Roland Vogt Abingdon: Routledge, 2017 232 p. EN ISBN 9781138651715 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 104152 At a time when the economic troubles and bailouts of Greece and other European economies are casting significant doubt on the future viability of the Eurozone and the EU, it is crucial to examine the origins of the political will and leadership that is necessary to move the integration process forward. This book makes a significant conceptual and empirical contribution by elucidating the extent to which the integration process hinges not on institutions and norms, but on the relations among leaders. The author conducts a comparative diplomatic history of three critical junctures in the process of European integration: the creation of the Common Market (1955–1957), British accession (1969–1973), and the introduction of the Euro (1989– 1993). He illustrates how personal diplomacy, leadership constellations, and the dynamics among leaders enable breakthroughs or inhibit accords.
