Personal diplomacy in the EU: political leadership and critical junctures of / Roland Vogt Abingdon: Routledge, 2017 232 p. EN ISBN 9781138651715 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 104152

At a time when the economic troubles and bailouts of Greece and other European economies are casting significant doubt on the future viability of the Eurozone and the EU, it is crucial to examine the origins of the political will and leadership that is necessary to move the integration process forward. This book makes a significant conceptual and empirical contribution by elucidating the extent to which the integration process hinges not on institutions and norms, but on the relations among leaders. The author conducts a comparative diplomatic history of three critical junctures in the process of European integration: the creation of the Common Market (1955–1957), British accession (1969–1973), and the introduction of the Euro (1989– 1993). He illustrates how personal diplomacy, leadership constellations, and the dynamics among leaders enable breakthroughs or inhibit accords.

Europe under stress: internal and external challenges for the EU and its member states / Hartmut Marhold (ed.) Baden-Baden: Nomos, 2017 165 p. EN/FR ISBN 9783848735662 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 104057

This book furnishes the first year's collection of CIFE's Policy Papers, which allows every reader to acquire an analytical and synthetical view of Europe in today's globalized world. Topical issues such as the EU's combat against the financial, economic and public debt crisis, the Ukraine crisis, or the perspective of 'Brexit' (British withdrawal from the EU) are exposed and commented, in a reader friendly way, without undue simplification. Four categories allow more orientation in the complex network of challenges: (1) EU internal policies, institutions and system adaptation, (2) a look into several EU member states and their specific stance face to current problems, (3) EU external relations, to its neighborhood and in a global dimension, and (4) issues of International Relations on the whole depict a state of the art in European and global affairs in our times.

The countries of the larger region of Eastern Europe pass through change and "modernisation" processes with ambivalent effects. This book tackles aspects of cultural diversity and change in the Baltic States, in Southeast Europe and in the Southern Caucasus. These regions are diverse not only with regard to their historical, political and religious traditions but also with regard to their status as EU-members or non-members. The articles focus on the situation of ethnic minorities and related political and public discourses as well as on aspects of political cultures. The anthology also raises the topic of cleavages between geographic Eastern Europe and Europe’s "reunited" part.

Naked diplomacy: power and statecraft in the digital age / Tom Fletcher London: William Collins, 2016. 310 p. EN ISBN 9780008127565 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 103878

Who will be in power in the 21st century? Governments? Big business? Internet titans? And how do we influence the future? In the next 100 years, the world will need to deal with the same amount of social development witnessed in the last 43 centuries - from the rebirth of the city state, the battle for new energy, and disappearing borders, to the desire of the world’s people to move to developed nations. The author, a former British ambassador, explores the core principles of a progressive 21st century foreign policy: how to balance interventionism and national interest, use global governance to achieve national objectives and set out an agenda for representative international systems. Alongside wisdom from history’s most influential global leaders and diplomats - Talleyrand, Kissinger, Mandela and the Kennedys included - he analyses the rise of smart power, soft power and the new interventionism.

The utopia of rules : on technology, stupidity, and the secret joys of bureaucracy / David Graeber Brooklyn, NY: Melville House, 2016. 261 p. EN ISBN 9781612195186 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 103879

Where does the desire for endless rules and regulations come from? How did we come to spend so much time filling out forms? And just how much are our lives being ruined by all this nonstop documentation? To answer these questions, the author, one of the most important and provocative thinkers, traces the unexpected ways we relate to bureaucracy and reveals how it shapes our lives in ways we may not even notice. Is the inane, annoying paperwork we confront daily really a cipher for state violence? Is the capitalist promise of salvation through technology just a tool for the powerful to exert more control?

The euro and the battle of ideas / Markus K. Brunnermeier, Harold James, and Jean-Pierre Landau Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 2016. 440 p. EN ISBN 9780691172927 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 103973

Why is Europe’s great monetary endeavour, the Euro, in trouble? A string of economic difficulties in Greece, Ireland, Spain, Italy, and other Eurozone nations has left observers wondering whether the currency union can survive. In this book, the authors argue that the core problem with the Euro lies in the philosophical differences between the founding countries of the Eurozone, particularly Germany and France. But the authors also show how these seemingly incompatible differences can be reconciled to ensure Europe’s survival.

Europe’s functional constitution : a theory of constitutionalism beyond the state / Turkuler Isiksel Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2016. 265 p. EN ISBN 9780198759072 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 103916

Constitutionalism has become a byword for legitimate government, but is it fated to lose its relevance as constitutional states relinquish power to international institutions? This book evaluates the extent to which constitutionalism, as an empirical idea and normative ideal, can be adapted to institutions beyond the state by surveying the sophisticated legal and political system of the European Union. Having originated in a series of

agreements between states, the EU has acquired important constitutional features like judicial review, protections for individual rights, and a hierarchy of norms. Nonetheless, it confounds traditional models of constitutional rule to the extent that its claim to authority rests on the promise of economic prosperity and technocratic competence rather than on the democratic will of citizens.

Enraged citizens, European peace and democratic deficits: or why the democracy given to us must become one we fight for / Robert Menasse; translated by Craig Decker : Seagull, 2016. 134 p. EN ISBN 9780857423627 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 103946

Spanning from the beginning of the transnational idea with 1951’s European Coal and Steel Community to the current financial crisis, the author focuses on the institutional structures and forces both advancing and obstructing the European project. Given the internal tensions among the , Parliament, and Council, the author argues that

current problems that are frequently misunderstood as resulting from the financial crisis are, in fact, political. Along the way, he makes the bold claim that either the Europe of nation-states will perish - or the project of transcending the nation-states will. A provocative book, it analyses the financial and bureaucratic structures of the European Union and sheds light on the state of the debt crisis.

Unequal Europe: social divisions and social cohesion in an old continent / James Wickham Abingdon: Routledge, 2016. 277 p. EN ISBN 9781857285512 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 103974

This wide-ranging and comparative text reviews the major theoretical and substantive debates on social inequality in Europe. It provides a valuable dual focus on European society and individual societies while placing Europe in its wider global context. Demonstrating the continued importance of national difference within Europe, the author argues that nonetheless the European Social Model has softened social inequalities such as those of wealth and income distribution, social class, gender and possibly even ethnicity. However these achievements are now being undermined, partially by the European Union itself. The book also challenges conventional wisdom on Europe’s alleged need for immigration and highlights the UK’s distinctiveness within Europe, explaining the country’s uneasy relation to the European project.
