(©Melitta Campostrini) Together with my excellent team, the curators, our fellows and partner institutions we have consolidated the Bruno Kreisky Forum as a genuine centre of European and international thinking. We have enlarged our capacity of drawing attention to sensitive human and political problems and so could trigger a communication process between opposing parties – within Europe, between Europe and its neighbouring regions as well as between Europe and the Middle East. The crisis of democracy in Europe, the tragedies in the Middle East and their dramatic consequences for peoples’ security and wellbeing were at the centre of our activities, adding new lecture series and featuring a number of international experts. A lecture series curated by Isolde Charim addressed the confrontation between ›Fundamentalism and Modernity‹ and raised questions related to strategies to prevent the drift off to radicalization as well as questions of fundamental problems liberal society is faced with: How does a liberal society cope with violence? How does a liberal society respond to a threat to its liberalism? How can an open society avoid its clamping down? In continuation of last year’s 1325 conference ›Women in International Dialogue‹ – a feminist approach to inter- national politics – Viola Raheb joined our team of curators. Our lecture series and public debates are always attended by an impressive number of interested citizens – the Bruno Kreisky Forum being the place to express ideas and exchange views in Vienna’s public sphere. Thanks to the support of our sponsors we were able to further expand the so-called invisible part of our work, namely the activities of our working- and research groups (›protected groups‹). In co-operation with the Progressive Alliance of the Social Democratic Members of the European Parliament and academic institutions, the publication ›Rethinking the Politics of Israel/Palestine‹ was presented in the European Parliament in Brussels, in the House of Europe in Vienna, and in round table discussions in several European capitals. The Centre for Liberal Strategies in Sofia continues to be our partner institute for the series ›Europe at Risk‹ and new international partner institutes joined us in important geopolitical challenges. As recognition of our commitment I was bestowed by Austrian President Heinz Fischer with the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Austria (›Großes Ehrenzeichen für Verdienste um die Republik Österreich‹), which I gratefully accepted in the name of my team and my supportive family. During the second half of the year the Karl Kahane Foundation and the Bruno Kreisky Forum joined forces in the search for authentic voices in the refugee crisis. Together we planned and organized ›N-O-W – International Mayors’ Conference‹, which opened the first chapter of our activities in 2016. More to come in Annual ’16! I would also like to thank the Board of Directors for the confidence they have shown in me, the sponsors for their support, my team, the curators and all the participants in the working groups for their commitment and our audience for their loyalty.
