Among the “cool” Cynthia Wimer attending were John Gajdos and Elaine Giannini who are now Secretary our newest club members. When you see them around the club, Laura McCarren Sr. Director give them a warm welcome. Jim Bruzenak You only have until November 1st to get your reservations in Director for the Commodore’s Ball, and, as Commodore, I do expect all to attend. Also, Glenda Boatman keep in mind that Saturday, November 4th is our General Meeting that will be COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSONS preceded by a potluck dinner. With a full stomach and a glass of wine all will be Captain ready for the General Meeting which promises to have something of interest to Jeff Davidson all. Ocean Fleet Captain Greg Barker The agenda for the General Meeting will include votes on the request of three Ocean Fleet Captain members for Life Membership, a motion brought to the Board for a change in the John Bodine By-Laws that would add the Port Captain to the Board along with a third Director, Day Sailer Fleet Captain Lorraine Budge a request from the Board that funds be provided from our reserves to install an Lido Fleet Captain elevator, and a dues increase of $75.00. The Port Captain’s Andrew Brown job is huge and critical to the welfare of the club and deserves, in my opinion, the Summer Glenda Boatman authority that comes with being a member of the Board. We now have three-year Junior Advisor terms for Directors and it only makes sense to me to have one elected each year. I Bruce Masterson would also suggest that we make it customary, rather than mandatory, that the Lex Budge Fun Float outgoing Commodore serves as the new Director. FROM YOUR VICE COMMODORE The next time you belly up to our famous bar, you may notice a new burgee with a big “T” on it. The Vice Commodore of the Tiburon Y.C. and I recently exchanged club burgees during an award ceremony for the San Francisco Bay Optimist Championships. The TYC enthusiasti- cally put on a very well run event with 10 races over Labor Day weekend. The MBJYC, was represented by Elizabeth Soll, Kathryn Soll, Shannon McClish and Rory McClish, all sailing in the Green Fleet. (Photos/results can be found at www.sfbayopti.org.) TYC, like MBYC, is a friendly, all –volunteer club, located on the N.E. side of the Tiburon Peninsula. And as if we weren’t having enough fun, the Opti sailor families were invited to camp on the lawn in front of the club. The sailing conditions were great and we hope to have MBJYC members attend annually. An upcoming item to be voted on at the November General Membership Meeting will be the installation of a wheelchair lift to be located on the exterior of the building near the location of the BBQ. I’ve been looking into this for some time now and I have a bid for the appropriate model for our use. Basically, it would be an enclosed elevator shaft going up to the landing at the top of the stairs with a 42” high lift car inside. The unit will be con- structed of galvanized steel and aluminum with tinted acrylic panels. This finish will best handle the salt air. Some site preparation will need to be provided, such as: electrical power, concrete work, and landing alterations. All in all, your Board of Directors believe this addition will serve our club well. A chair lift such as this one will complete the bulk of our A.D.A. compliance and of course provide much needed access for a portion of our membership, not to mention some relief in stocking the bar. So please come to the November General Member- ship Meeting and vote to fund this project. Thank you.

V.C. Dana McClish

FUN FLOAT

October 19th 10:00 AM

Warm sunshine, wafting breezes, glassy wa- ters and a great meal with friendly , intelligent people, that was our Sept. Fun Float. On Thursday, Oct. 19th at 10:00 AM our fear- less flotsom flotilla will once again sojourn into IN MEMORY OF the unknown. Bring a snack, liquids and undy- ing devotion toward the Grand Poo Pah. BOB WARREN

Bob was a generous boat owner– a fine craftsman who — G.P.P. contributed many sketches to the Masthead in the 80’s. He was most recently a fre- quent white wine sipper on Friday evenings. He will be missed. Page 4 MASTHEAD October 2006

FROM YOUR REAR COMMODORE

Ocean Fleet The Ocean Fleet ran a Makeup race on September 10th. Look for more on the Ocean Fleet in the Fleet Captain’s report from Greg Barker. Bay Fleet The Bay Fleet held several races this last month. The Morro Bay Daysailer Invitational, Fall II and Fall III, held on different days for the Lidos and the rest of the Bay Fleet. Dan MacDonald won the Fall Series for the Daysailer. Additional sailors for the Daysailer were Dana McClish, Susan Wiley, Victor Nigro, Ray Berndt, and Louis and Joni Wells. Don and Kit Lockwood won in Lidos. Also sailing were Larry Salas and daughter, Pat and Dot Rygh, Peter and Anita Rothenbuecher, Jim Orth, Terry Hensley and Bryan Watson. Upcoming Races Wysocki the 21st and 22nd of October, Juniors Regatta September 23rd, Jenkins Memorial October 7th, Lady at the Helm October 1st, and Ladies Day October 14th. Wysocki will be held at Lake Santa Margarita, water permitting, with a backup at Lake San Antonio. PROing We are still looking for Principal Race Officers, and helpers for all of the year’s final races except for Winter I which Jim Orth is doing, this being his second time PROing this year that I know of. The races left open are Drumstick, November 26th, the Commodores Cup November 18th, and a two day event Wysocki October 21st and 22nd. Conclusion Plenty of races to still get some sailing in. Many people think that this is the slow season for sailing. However, traveling sailors do a great deal of sailing during these next six months. Midwinter's in February, and Turkey days all over Southern and Northern Cal. We also have the hangover regatta, first of the year. Gail Condon discussed some of the sailing rules at the beginning of Saturdays regatta, please let me know if this was a helpful thing that you want to continue. Cheers Kevo

FROM THE PORT CAPTAIN’S DOCK

Ahoy all small boatyard users. Remember to make sure your boat that is kept in the boatyard is in pre- sentable shape. If you have a tarp covering your boat, see that it is neat and tidy, the trailer is operable, without flat tires and that there are no weeds in the area of your boat. We need to keep the boatyard in ship shape condition. All boats should have current registrations. Jeff Davidson

We sit, slack jawed, glassy eyed and drooling, staring at the silent phones. Occasionally a telemarketer calls and desperate for outside contact, we keep him on the line until he hangs up in disgust. Yes, we are the nominating committee, waiting for the flood of calls from members wanting to run for of- fice. But alas, even the telemarketers have stopped calling. Where are the outraged cries of “Throw the rascals out!”? Where are all those hubristic souls who know that they can do better? MIA I fear. The task of the nominating committee is to find two candidates for each position. We attempt this task in the hope we can complete our mission but to this date there has not been an overwhelming response. Here is the slate at this time.

Commodore: Dana McClish and ? Vice Commodore: Kevin Williams and John Schmidt Rear Commodore: Wayne Ratliff and ? Treasurer: Cynthia Wimer and ? Secretary: Sharon Brooks and ?

Nominations are always accepted from the floor at the General Meeting but why keep us in suspense?

Kai, son of Lisa and Robert Schwennicke, hails from Cayucos. At age 10, Kai attends Cayu- cos elementary in the 5th grade. His favorite subject is math. Kai's favorite activities besides sail- ing are Karate, soccer, and playing cello for the Youth Symphony. Kai sails with the Opti fleet, and loves competing. He aspires to become a better heavy wind sailor. Kai is a natural sailor and is quick to learn the concepts of sailing. Page 6 MASTHEAD October 2006

We came out in force…small but mighty… for Fall II and III. We had to reschedule with the approval of the Rear Commodore, so that we could all go to our District Championships in the Bay area. We did have to find our own race committee and ALEX FINLEY and DOUG GOULD, our staunch supporters, did the job for us and we are most grateful. We had 7 boats sail in a ripping current on Saturday, but fortunately the breeze was strong enough to keep us moving. All I can remember of the results were the final firsts. On Saturday Pat and Dot placed first. On Sunday Don and Kit took first and the Series. Hopefully R.C., Kevin, will list the full results. The next weekend 5 of us went to District II Championships. The Sacramento Fleet had about the same num- ber, as did our hosting Fleet 62. I don’t have the exact numbers but there were, I believe, 17 boats present. The weather was absolutely gorgeous…warm and windy, rather gusty. Lake Elizabeth was a bit “green”, but we weren’t planning on swimming in it. First: CONGRATULATIONS to Terry Hensley, who placed 1st in the B Fleet. Terry had his nephew crewing for him. Second: CONDOLENCES TO: Bryan Watson, who was dismasted when a shroud broke; to Larry Salas, who sailed great until he had some gear problems; to Don Lockwood whose navigator got him lost on a race; and to Pat Rygh, who had an unfortunate experience with an El Toro. And so…there are many sad stories to tell…BUT it was all so much fun. After the first day of sailing 4 races, Lockwoods were tied for 1st place with Jack Navara, from Fremont. On the second day the Ryghs sailed into two, 1st places, to make some people a little nervous. The final results came out to be 1st Jack Navara, 2nd Don Lockwood, 3rd Pat Rygh. Saturday night we all went to Joe’s Place for a great dinner party. Joe’s hospitality was over the top, as were the efforts of Fremont Sailing Club. THANK YOU so much. We did have to have a short business meeting and the Sacramento Fleet volunteered to take over the District Secretary position. Next year the District II Championships will be in Sacramento. Meanwhile, Tom and Bette Jenkins went down to Big Bear to sail in a 2 day regatta. I hear it was a bit cold and more than a bit windy, with good competition. Tom won both days. Our next big weekend is at Santa Margarita Lake October 21 & 22. It’s always good fun camping, and a beautiful place to sail. Maybe we’ll get some sailors to come up from down south. I especially want to thank Dot and Pat Rygh, who hand carved to scale, the boats on the new Junior trophy. YOU ALL DID A FANTASTIC JOB!!!. WHAT WAS SO FANTASTIC YOU ASK??? 1...For most of you it was your first regatta. 2...You pushed the start line, had 2 general recalls and a number of individual recalls...very aggressive starts!!! 3...The racing was close and competitive, fun to watch, with 2 full on TIES in two different classes. 4...You all set up your boats, put your boats away, and helped each other. 5...You all held your cool, played as fair as you knew how to, and showed good sportsmanship (nothing could make us prouder than that). CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERY JUNIOR WHO SAILED. October 2006 MASTHEAD Page 9
