  • Antonio Salieri's Revenge
Antonio Salieri’s Revenge newyorker.com/magazine/2019/06/03/antonio-salieris-revenge By Alex Ross 1/13 Many composers are megalomaniacs or misanthropes. Salieri was neither. Illustration by Agostino Iacurci On a chilly, wet day in late November, I visited the Central Cemetery, in Vienna, where 2/13 several of the most familiar figures in musical history lie buried. In a musicians’ grove at the heart of the complex, Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms rest in close proximity, with a monument to Mozart standing nearby. According to statistics compiled by the Web site Bachtrack, works by those four gentlemen appear in roughly a third of concerts presented around the world in a typical year. Beethoven, whose two-hundred-and-fiftieth birthday arrives next year, will supply a fifth of Carnegie Hall’s 2019-20 season. When I entered the cemetery, I turned left, disregarding Beethoven and company. Along the perimeter wall, I passed an array of lesser-known but not uninteresting figures: Simon Sechter, who gave a counterpoint lesson to Schubert; Theodor Puschmann, an alienist best remembered for having accused Wagner of being an erotomaniac; Carl Czerny, the composer of piano exercises that have tortured generations of students; and Eusebius Mandyczewski, a magnificently named colleague of Brahms. Amid these miscellaneous worthies, resting beneath a noble but unpretentious obelisk, is the composer Antonio Salieri, Kapellmeister to the emperor of Austria. I had brought a rose, thinking that the grave might be a neglected and cheerless place. Salieri is one of history’s all-time losers—a bystander run over by a Mack truck of malicious gossip.

  • Carlo Goldoni As Musical Reformer
CARLO GOLDONI AS MUSICAL REFORMER IN SEARCH OF REALISM IN THE DRAMMA GIOCOSO La vraisemblance doit toujours être la principale règle, et sans laquelle toutes les autres deviennent déréglées. -l’Abbé d’Aubignac, La Pratique du Théâtre by Pervinca Rista Dissertation submitted to the Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Baltimore, Maryland March 18, 2015 © Pervinca Rista All Rights Reserved Abstract Venetian playwright Carlo Goldoni (1707-1793), who is best remembered in literary history for his realist ‘reform’ of comic theatre, was also a prolific librettist. In particular, his texts for music written from 1748 onwards remain understudied but warrant significant reappraisal, for Goldoni was one of the first to give shape to the dramma giocoso, an innovative and realistic new genre of opera that went on to have a lasting legacy all the way to W. A. Mozart and Lorenzo da Ponte. Through an interdisciplinary, historical approach and intertextual analysis, the present study reevaluates Goldoni’s drammi giocosi, largely overlooked by scholarship, to uncover the lasting innovations in form and content introduced by the Venetian playwright. Analysis of these texts also reveals clear affinity between Goldoni's contributions to the dramma giocoso and his reform of prose theatre. Most importantly, unlike other types of comic opera, the dramma giocoso has the particularity of combining buffo with serio, a dynamic that, through Goldoni's mature output, continually evolves to bring new realism and social relevance to opera theatre. Goldoni’s influence on this type of musical representation has not been fully considered, but the realism in music that he achieves through the dramma giocoso must be acknowledged as a lasting contribution to modern literature, and to operatic history.

  • Famiglie Di Cantanti E Compagnie Di Opera Buffa Negli Anni Di Goldoni

“MIXED TASTE,” COSMOPOLITANISM, AND INTERTEXTUALITY IN GEORG PHILIPP TELEMANN’S OPERA ORPHEUS Robert A. Rue A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC May 2017 Committee: Arne Spohr, Advisor Mary Natvig Gregory Decker © 2017 Robert A. Rue All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Arne Spohr, Advisor Musicologists have been debating the concept of European national music styles in the Baroque period for nearly 300 years. But what precisely constitutes these so-called French, Italian, and German “tastes”? Furthermore, how do contemporary sources confront this issue and how do they delineate these musical constructs? In his Music for a Mixed Taste (2008), Steven Zohn achieves success in identifying musical tastes in some of Georg Phillip Telemann’s instrumental music. However, instrumental music comprises only a portion of Telemann’s musical output. My thesis follows Zohn’s work by identifying these same national styles in opera: namely, Telemann’s Orpheus (Hamburg, 1726), in which the composer sets French, Italian, and German texts to music. I argue that though identifying the interrelation between elements of musical style and the use of specific languages, we will have a better understanding of what Telemann and his contemporaries thought of as national tastes. I will begin my examination by identifying some of the issues surrounding a selection of contemporary treatises, in order explicate the problems and benefits of their use. These sources include Johann Joachim Quantz’s Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte zu spielen (1752), two of Telemann’s autobiographies (1718 and 1740), and Johann Adolf Scheibe’s Critischer Musikus (1737).

The Historical and Pedagogical Significance of Excerpts by André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry (1741–1813). Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2019, 84 pp., 9 figures, bibliography, 50 titles. This collection of 9 vocal works, taken from the oœuvre of André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry (1741–1813), was chosen for their utility in teaching undergrad voice majors. This collection offers a group of songs that are attractive in their simplicity allowing the time in their lessons to be devoted to the instruction of French pronunciation. Grétry’s attention to detail in the setting of French prosody provides undergraduate singers with a collection of songs that offer an immediate understanding as to the nuances of the French language. With funding from an I-GRO grant through the University of North Texas, research was conducted in the archives of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and work continued in the Grétry Museum in Liège, Belgium. The primary sources found within these locations formulated valuable insights into to the life and influence of Grétry, and provided first-hand experience with research techniques within foreign libraries.

  • LE MIE MEMORIE ARTISTICHE Giovanni Pacini
LE MIE MEMORIE ARTISTICHE Giovanni Pacini English translation: Adriaan van der Tang, October 2011 1 2 GIOVANNI PACINI: LE MIE MEMORIE ARTISTICHE PREFACE Pacini’s autobiography Le mie memorie artistiche has been published in several editions. For the present translation the original text has been used, consisting of 148 pages and published in 1865 by G.G. Guidi. In 1872 E. Sinimberghi in Rome published Le mie memorie artistiche di Giovanni Pacini, continuate dall’avvocato Filippo Cicconetti. The edition usually referred to was published in 1875 by Le Monnier in Florence under the title Le mie memorie artistiche: edite ed inedite, edited by Ferdinando Magnani. The first 127 pages contain the complete text of the original edition of 1865 – albeit with a different page numbering – extended with the section ‘inedite’ of 96 pages, containing notes Pacini made after publication of the 1865-edition, beginning with three ‘omissioni’. This 1875- edition covers the years as from 1864 and describes Pacini’s involvement with performances of some of his operas in several minor Italian theatres. His intensive supervision at the first performances in 1867 of Don Diego di Mendoza and Berta di Varnol was described as well, as were the executions of several of his cantatas, among which the cantata Pacini wrote for the unveiling of the Rossini- monument in Pesaro, his oratorios, masses and instrumental works. Furthermore he wrote about the countless initiatives he developed, such as the repatriation of Bellini’s remains to Catania and the erection of a monument in Arezzo in honour of the great poet Guido Monaco, much adored by him.
