(Francesco Guccini, L’ultima Thule) Dopo il varo, «AOQU. Achilles Orlando Quixote Ulysses» approda al suo secondo numero. La metafora del porto è coerente con la dimensione marina che informa i saggi di questa nuova uscita. Se nell’immaginario epico occidentale è infatti la terra a essere dominante, è pur vero che – alle sorgenti del genere – alla piana insanguinata sotto le mura di Troia seguono le onde inquietanti del nostos di Ulisse. E ancora Tasso, almeno a livello di retorica auto-pubblicitaria, aveva pensato di accostare all’impresa terrena dei Crociati un secondo poema imperniato sul ritorno in patria di uno dei suoi personaggi. Se il mondo marino è il luogo per eccellenza in cui l’eroe, e più in generale l’uomo, viene messo alla prova attraverso le sfide della fortuna, il fascino dell’ignoto e le prove del viaggio, l’epica che gli dà voce non soltanto fornisce un diverso sistema di scenari, episodi, imprese ed avversari rispetto a quello dell’epica militare di terra, ma impone anche una retorica differente e un campo metaforico altro: questioni che meritano una trattazione autonoma. Il secondo numero di «AOQU», dunque, percorre un viaggio non solo nei mari noti della letteratura occidentale, lungo rotte segnate da alcuni dei capolavori del passato, ma sperimenta anche più arditi pileggi in acque poco frequentate o lontane. AOQU – Epica marina, I, 2 (2020) - https://riviste.unimi.it/aoqu - ISBN 9788855264051- DOI 10.13130/2724-3346/2020/14722 Anche questo secondo numero non può che aprirsi con Omero, con due diverse e suggestive prospettive di lettura: Ronald Blankenborg indaga il mare dell’Odissea come mappa narratologica, mentre Yukiko Saito, partendo da un’analisi semantica, evidenzia la dimensione luministico-sacrale dei colori marini in entrambi i poemi. Restando nell’ambito della poesia esametrica greca, ma con uno scarto cronologico notevole, il contributo di Xavier Lafontaine indaga il ruolo fisico e poetico del mare (e dei fiumi) nella dimensione profetica degli Oracoli Sibillini, fra l’età ellenistica e quella bizantina. Oriane Demerliac discute, facendo perno sull’Eneide, l’assenza e presenza delle donne in relazione ai testi epici di ambientazione marina. L’intervento di Margherita Lecco ci conduce nel moderno delle letterature romanze, con il Wistasse le Moine dedicato alle avventure semileggendarie del pirata nobile Eustache; Maria Shakhray affronta poi tre poemi cinque-secenteschi in altrettante lingue, ispirati alla battaglia di Lepanto, indagando così l’impatto degli eventi storici moderni sui modelli epici. Il contributo di Cristina Montagnani si rivolge invece alla Maia di d’Annunzio, come proiezione dell’autore su Ulisse e sul mito della classicità greca. L’accostamento fra la Ballata di Rudi di Elio Pagliarani e la Terra desolata di Eliot offre a Giuseppe Carrara l’occasione per interrogarsi sul ruolo dell’epica nella poesia contemporanea. Gli ultimi due interventi, infine, affrontano affascinanti casi di epica non-letteraria: Elena Traina ci porta nella cultura oceanistica indagando la rilettura epica delle vicende storiche in un documentario e in una graphic novel dedicati al navigatore polinesiano Tupaia, mentre Francesco Toniolo chiude il cerchio della nostra esplorazione concentrandosi sul videogioco “oceanico” The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker nei suoi punti di contatto con l’Odissea. Il terzo numero di «AOQU» sarà dedicato al meraviglioso nell’epica, mentre il quarto accoglierà gli interventi di un seminario di studi sul tema della morte dell’eroe. Guglielmo Barucci, Sandra Carapezza, Michele Comelli e Cristina Zampese 8 THE TERRITORY WITHOUT A MAP: THE SEA AS A NARRATOLOGICAL FRAME AND COMPASS IN THE ODYSSEY Ronald Blankenborg Radboud University RIASSUNTO: Il contributo intende dimostrare che il mare nell’Odissea non è tanto il territorio ricostruito dalla mappa del poema, quanto piuttosto la cornice narratologica che “tiene insieme” il poema: il mare, infatti, unisce le singole disavventure di Odisseo. Pertanto il mare nel poema omerico non è solo acqua salata e scura: è il continuum su cui si muove la mente del narratore, alla ricerca di punti di approdo per saldare tra loro racconti ed episodi. Cercando nello spazio virtuale della sua immaginazione, Odisseo presenta le sue disavventure e la loro collocazione remota come isole isolate, e utilizza parimenti il mare come spazio virtuale per inquadrarle. Per il tessitore di trame Odisseo il mare è la sua tela fittizia. E come ricorda l’ammonimento di Tiresia (Od. XI 121- 137, ribadito in Od. XXIII 265-283), Odisseo deve in qualche modo fuggire da questa finzione per trovare la pace, anche se non potrà fuggire la morte che verrà proprio da lì. PAROLE CHIAVE: Odissea, narratologia, Apologo, spazio virtuale, storyworlds ABSTRACT: In this paper, I argue that the sea in Homer’s Odyssey is not the territory suggested by its map, but rather an all-encompassing narratological frame: the sea keeps the isolated locations of Odysseus’ misadventures together. As such the sea in the Odyssey is not just salty, dark-coloured water: it is the continuum in which the narrator’s mind roams, looking for anchor points to which to attach tales and episodes. Searching the virtual space of his imagination, Odysseus presents his series of misadventures and their remote locations as islands in isolation, and uses the sea as an equally virtual space to frame them. For the story-weaving Odysseus, the sea is the fictitious tapestry. And as Teiresias’ warning words show (Od. XI 121-137, repeated in Od. Its importance reflects the world view of its audience: coastal regions, islands and the open sea made up the inhabitable and accessible space, far more than mountainous areas and the remote hinterland.2 For centuries, both during the period in which archaic epic developed, and when it was written down, those listening to the stories recognized the characters’ dependence on the salty ways, and the many dangers they presented. LUCE IRIGARAY 205 In the 1950s, Desmond Pacey remarked that war writ- ing was the least examined area in Canadian literature, a comment still rele- vant today. To date, only one article on Great War fictions has appeared. Sweepingly titled "Canadian Fiction of the Great War," it sounds inclusive, but is not. Although Eric Thompson declares his intention to analyze war novels "which constitute the best fiction by Canadian writers about the experiences of Canadian fighting soldiers in the Great War of 1914-18" (81), he discusses only fictions by Peregrine Acland, Charles Yale Harrison, Philip Child, and contemporary writer Timothy Findley. In exclusively considering male writers, however, Thompson succumbs to traditional patriarchal criti- cism, which assumes that the weaponless are wordless, and that war is none of women's business; hence he ignores several of the "best" wartime writers such as Gertrude Arnold and L. M. Montgomery, whose novels also include (albeit peripherally) the experiences of Canadian fighting soldiers.     TransAntiquity TransAntiquity explores transgender practices, in particular cross-dressing, and their literary and figurative representations in antiquity. It offers a ground-breaking study of cross-dressing, both the social practice and its conceptualization, and its interaction with normative prescriptions on gender and sexuality in the ancient Mediterranean world. Special attention is paid to the reactions of the societies of the time, the impact transgender practices had on individuals’ symbolic and social capital, as well as the reactions of institutionalized power and the juridical systems. The variety of subjects and approaches demonstrates just how complex and widespread “transgender dynamics” were in antiquity. Domitilla Campanile (PhD 1992) is Associate Professor of Roman History at the University of Pisa, Italy. Filippo Carlà-Uhink is Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter, UK. After studying in Turin and Udine, he worked as a lecturer at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, and as Assistant Professor for Cultural History of Antiquity at the University of Mainz, Germany. Margherita Facella is Associate Professor of Greek History at the University of Pisa, Italy. Giordano, Ph.D. Abstract This dissertation brings a new approach to Silvina Ocampo studies by using the theory of uncanny and fantastic fields. It has been a great contribution the theoretical foundations of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud The Uncanny and Irène Bessière Le récit fantastique. The main book is titled Fantasy: The Literature of Subversion by Rosemary Jackson as it integrates the notions raised by Tzvetan Todorov and Irène Bessière. Jackson's contribution has allowed me to clarify the definition of the fantastic and the uncanny to the development of this dissertation. I think the term paraxial deserves special mention because it reaffirms the fantastic not categorically defined within the real or unreal, but rather is considered as an ambiguity. Some short stories of the writer show signs of ambiguity, a characteristic of the fantastic, but this does not classify all her works within this category. I do not intend to place it within a literary genre because it’s narrative is presented in influence of various literary forms. I proved, however, that it leans more toward the uncanny rather than other narrative categories. Silvina Ocampo is an Argentina writer who seduces readers with an approach contrary to convention.

    Ouida Bergère Also Known As: Eulalia Bergère, Ida Bergère, Mrs. George Fitzmaurice, Mrs. Basil Rathbone Lived: December 14, 1885 - November 29, 1974 Worked as: adapter, film actress, scenario editor, screenwriter Worked In: United States by Laura Jacquelyn Simmons Ouida Bergère was perhaps best known in the film industry as Mrs. Basil Rathbone and party hostess extraordinaire. However, before her marriage, to Rathbone, Bergère was a prominent and top paid scenario writer. Bergère was born in Spain, but moved to the US at the age of six. Her father was French-Spanish and her mother, British (Lowrey 1920, 22). There is some conflicting information regarding her birth name; most sources claim she was born Ida Bergère, others Eulalia Bergère. Regardless, upon entering the film industry, she changed her name to Ouida. Bergère began her film career by serving as scenario editor and actress for Pathé Freres, eventually writing her own scripts and branching out to other companies, including Vitagraph and Famous Players-Lasky, according to the New York Dramatic Mirror in 1915 (24). Much of Bergère’s screenwriting career coincides with the career of her second husband, George Fitzmaurice, to whom she was married before Rathbone. She met Fitzmaurice after she started her screenwriting career, and after their marriage, he directed almost all of the films she wrote. As is the case with the many Hollywood marriages, Bergère’s relationship to Fitzmaurice must be considered when discussing her career, and, typically, because her career was so closely linked to that of Fitzmaurice, there is confusion about their credits. She very well might have had her hand in directing some of the films that have been credited to him, as was the case with other couples such as actress Alice Terry and director Rex Ingram.

[PLATE XII.] DURING the summer of 1897 I had the opportunity of making extensive exploration in Phrygia, and the following paper gives, as a first instalment, an account of the more important results of the season's work there. I have given a map (Plate XII) based on the Ottoman Railway Survey to illustrate the watercourses of the Laodiceian district, but I regret that a map to show the new sites has had to be deferred. At the outset I must make acknow- ledgment of the valuable help I have received from Prof. W. M. Ramsay, who has kindly sent me some criticisms and suggestions. For the numerous references to his volumes on Phrygia no apology is necessary. Every student of its history must use his brilliant pages as the basis of his study; and the work of the explorer in the districts which they cover must naturally be to endeavour to amplify the information, and to confirm or correct the views, which he finds there. Few parts of Phrygia have been so frequently traversed as the Lycos valley with the adjacent Carian and Lydian frontiers: yet anyone who studies this district will be astonished at the number of unsolved problems which it presents. To begin with the Carian borderland and go round the valley of the Lycos, the first problem that confronts us is the site of KIDRAMOS, a city without annals, but important enough to possess a coinage of its own, at least from the time of Augustus to that of Julia Maesa.

  • Coins: Corinth Excavations, 1976, Forum Southwest
    COINS: CORINTH EXCAVATIONS, 1976, FORUM SOUTHWEST (PLATE 1) N 1976, the excavationsat Ancient Corinthunearthed 493 coins. All but two of these came from the southwest section of the Roman forum, while the two, Nos. 3 and 100, were found in graves discovered in the excavation of a minor project at Anaploga. Included in the above total are the remaining coins from the water-sieving of Well 75-5 in the Centaur Bath. Because the sieving is a long and painstaking process, these pieces were still unrecovered when the first part of the coins from the well appeared in the 1975 report.'
