“Living with the Right Focus and Measures” 2 Corinthians 10:12-18 May 6, 2018 Faith Presbyterian Church – Evening Service Pr. Nicoletti I’m picking up once more with my series on Second Corinthians tonight. I preached from Hebrews back in March and so it’s been seven months since we last looked at 2 Corinthians. We are up to chapter 10, verses 12-18 tonight. To remind you of what’s going on, at the beginning of chapter 10 there’s a significant shift in tone. Commentator Paul Barnett puts it like this – he says: “It appears that, as the letter draws to its conclusion, Paul’s appeal to the Corinthians becomes more intense emotionally. Like many an orator (and preacher!), he has kept the most urgent and controversial matters until the end and dealt with them passionately so that his last words make their greatest impact on the Corinthians.” [Barnett, 452] The Apostle Paul begins chapter ten by directly confronting some of the accusations his opponents have made against him. We looked at that back in March. Then, in verse 12, he shifts from responding to direct accusations, to highlighting an important difference between him and his opponents. We’ll begin there now – 2 Corinthians 10:12-18. The Apostle Paul writes: 12 Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding. 13 But we will not boast beyond limits, but will boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, to reach even to you. -

De la influencia pictórica en el cromatismo y la configuración espacial del plano (encuadre, composición, perspectiva, profundierad), al diverso tratamiento del tiempo y los mecanismos narrativos en ambos campos; además de las bŭsquedas experimentales de las vanguardias y sus interferencias, el documental sobre arte como género, o la tradición artística como apoyo para la re- creación histórica o religiosa. También la propia pintura ha sido tratada temática- mente o como punto de partida para la reflexión sobre el proceso creativo Pero en el amplio abanico de posibilidades de esta relación, las biografías ci- nematográficas sobre artistas han sido uno de los exponentes más fructíferos, has- ta el punto de constituir casi un género propio. Vincent van Gogh Summary of Van Gogh’s life Vincent van Gogh (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch Post- Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterized by bold colors and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. His suicide at 37 followed years of mental illness and poverty. Van Gogh was unsuccessful during his lifetime, and was considered a madman and a failure. He became famous after his suicide, and exists in the public imagination as the quintessential misunderstood genius, the artist "where discourses on madness and creativity converge". His reputation began to grow in the early 20th century as elements of his painting style came to be incorporated by the Fauves and the German Expressionists. He attained widespread critical, commercial and popular success over the ensuing decades, and is remembered as an important but tragic painter, whose troubled personality typifies the romantic ideal of the tortured artist. Their making usually reflects a determination on the part of the director or star to see the artist as an alter-ego. Many of them were adaptations of successful literary works, which tempted financial backers by having a ready-made audience based on a pre-established reputation. The sub-genre’s development is explored via the grouping of films with associated themes and the use of case studies. -

NEBRASKA’S CENTENARIANS AGE 107 OR ABOVE — 1867 to 2001 by E. A. Kral May 1, 2014 update of original published in The Crete News, April 24, 2002, a 40-page supplement Public Announcement for All Nebraskans Effective May 1, 2002, the Nebraska Health Care Association initiated two on-going public service projects on its website to highlight Nebraskans who reach age 107 or above. The NHCA website address is www.nehca.org. First, the NHCA has maintained a roster of living Nebraskans who have attained the age of 107 or above that provides name, birth date, and county in which the person resides. Second, the NHCA has made available access to this updated manuscript version of E. A. Kral’s “Nebraska’s Centenarians Age 107 or Above — 1867 to 2001” but without photographs. Moreover, it has also offered a brief on-going ranking of Nebraska’s supercentenarians in state history, and another document titled “Oldest Twins in Nebraska History.” Relatives, healthcare professionals, and others are asked to notify the NHCA when someone with Nebraska connections reaches age 107 for placement of name, birth date, and county of residence on the living roster. Since age verification may be necessary via census records involving the centenarian’s youth or early adult years, relatives may assist by providing names of parents and location of centenarian during 1900 to 1920. Also please notify the NHCA when the persons on the living roster become deceased so that the roster may be current. Our museum is thus still a relative newcomer on the international scene. Nonetheless, in this fairly short period, the Van Gogh Museum has established itself as one of the liveliest institutions of its kind, with a growing reputation for its collections, exhibitions and research programmes. The past year has been marked by particular success: the Van Gogh and Gauguin exhibition attracted record numbers of visitors to its Amsterdam venue. And in this Journal we publish our latest acquisitions, including Manet's The jetty at Boulogne-sur-mer, the first important work by this artist to enter any Dutch public collection. By a happy coincidence, our 30th anniversary coincides with the 150th of the birth of Vincent van Gogh. As we approach this milestone it seemed to us a good moment to reflect on the current state of Van Gogh studies. For this issue of the Journal we asked a number of experts to look back on the most significant developments in Van Gogh research since the last major anniversary in 1990, the centenary of the artist's death. Our authors were asked to filter a mass of published material in differing areas, from exhibition publications to writings about fakes and forgeries. To complement this, we also invited a number of specialists to write a short piece on one picture from our collection, an exercise that is intended to evoke the variety and resourcefulness of current writing on Van Gogh.
