“Living with the Right Focus and Measures” 2 Corinthians 10:12-18 May 6, 2018 Faith Presbyterian Church – Evening Service Pr. Nicoletti I’m picking up once more with my series on Second Corinthians tonight. I preached from Hebrews back in March and so it’s been seven months since we last looked at 2 Corinthians. We are up to chapter 10, verses 12-18 tonight. To remind you of what’s going on, at the beginning of chapter 10 there’s a significant shift in tone. Commentator Paul Barnett puts it like this – he says: “It appears that, as the letter draws to its conclusion, Paul’s appeal to the Corinthians becomes more intense emotionally. Like many an orator (and preacher!), he has kept the most urgent and controversial matters until the end and dealt with them passionately so that his last words make their greatest impact on the Corinthians.” [Barnett, 452] The Apostle Paul begins chapter ten by directly confronting some of the accusations his opponents have made against him. We looked at that back in March. Then, in verse 12, he shifts from responding to direct accusations, to highlighting an important difference between him and his opponents. We’ll begin there now – 2 Corinthians 10:12-18. The Apostle Paul writes: 12 Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding. 13 But we will not boast beyond limits, but will boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, to reach even to you. -

Our museum is thus still a relative newcomer on the international scene. Nonetheless, in this fairly short period, the Van Gogh Museum has established itself as one of the liveliest institutions of its kind, with a growing reputation for its collections, exhibitions and research programmes. The past year has been marked by particular success: the Van Gogh and Gauguin exhibition attracted record numbers of visitors to its Amsterdam venue. And in this Journal we publish our latest acquisitions, including Manet's The jetty at Boulogne-sur-mer, the first important work by this artist to enter any Dutch public collection. By a happy coincidence, our 30th anniversary coincides with the 150th of the birth of Vincent van Gogh. As we approach this milestone it seemed to us a good moment to reflect on the current state of Van Gogh studies. For this issue of the Journal we asked a number of experts to look back on the most significant developments in Van Gogh research since the last major anniversary in 1990, the centenary of the artist's death. Our authors were asked to filter a mass of published material in differing areas, from exhibition publications to writings about fakes and forgeries. To complement this, we also invited a number of specialists to write a short piece on one picture from our collection, an exercise that is intended to evoke the variety and resourcefulness of current writing on Van Gogh. -

For a younger generation, it is perhaps surprising to discover that the institution is in fact so young. Indeed, it is remarkable that in such a short period of time the Museum has been able to create its own specific niche in both the Dutch and international art worlds. This first issue of the Van Gogh Museum Journal marks the passage of the Rijksmuseum (National Museum) Vincent van Gogh to its new status as Stichting Van Gogh Museum (Foundation Van Gogh Museum). The publication is designed to both report on the Museum's activities and, more particularly, to be a motor and repository for the scholarship on the work of Van Gogh and aspects of the permanent collection in broader context. Besides articles on individual works or groups of objects from both the Van Gogh Museum's collection and the collection of the Museum Mesdag, the Journal will publish the acquisitions of the previous year. Scholars not only from the Museum but from all over the world are and will be invited to submit their contributions. -

DOCTOR WHO AND THE CREATION OF A NON-GENDERED HERO ARCHETYPE Alessandra J. Pelusi 85 Pages December 2014 This thesis investigates the ways in which the television program Doctor Who forges a new, non-gendered, hero archetype from the amalgamation of its main characters. In order to demonstrate how this is achieved, I begin with reviewing some of the significant and relevant characters that contribute to this. I then examine the ways in which female and male characters are represented in Doctor Who, including who they are, their relationship with the Doctor, and what major narrative roles they play. I follow this with a discussion of the significance of the companion, including their status as equal to the Doctor. From there, I explore the ways in which the program utilizes existing archetypes by subverting them and disrupting the status quo. -

Since they didn’t have access to a plotter, plans had to be printed on A4 paper and stuck together, in a circle. The small details of the gate had to Tweet be drawn up from scratch, using photos and video footage. The skeleton of the gate is made up of 18 X-shaped pieces, and the spinning part is made from small planks. 89 The intricate stargate symbols had to be painstakingly carved, from wood, and chevrons first had to be carved from Styrofoam. The back of the stargate, though painted in gray, is totally fake, but the front looks realistic enough, with chevrons locking and everything. Thanks to an inner track, it even spins. Mango wasn’t too satisfied with the paint-job, but all in all this is a geeky masterpiece, just like the Stargate Share home-cinema . 84 Media Education Research Journal Doctor Who, New Dimensions and the Inner World: A Reciprocal Review Two significant additions to Doctor Who’s academic ‘canon’ were published recently and, continuing our interest in new ways of approaching the review format, here we ask two authors, Iain MacRury and Matt Hills, to appraise each others’ texts. Iain MacRury, I. and Rustin, M. (2013) The Inner World of Doctor Who London: Karnac Books. This book, part of the ‘Psychoanalysis and Popular Culture’ series, does two things that are relatively unusual within the dimensions of Doctor Who scholarship. Firstly, it relates psychoanalytic thinking to the programme, and secondly it focuses on a selected range of texts, which, though they all hail from the BBC Wales’ version of the show, are not otherwise structured by production eras. Instead, case study texts are chosen on the basis of the authors’ emotional and mindful responses to them. MacRury and Rustin deliberately set out to neglect many things that have preoccupied recent media/cultural studies, e.g. the productivity of fan audiences or the proliferation of transmedia and promotional paratexts. Perhaps these might constitute the ‘outer worlds’ of Doctor Who, markers of its industrial and cultural contexts. By contrast, this book seeks to return to traditional modes of textual study. It’s a decision that leads to some characteristic strengths and occasional weaknesses. On the plus side, there are many smart observations here which provoke new ways of seeing ‘nu Who’. The Daleks, for example, have been thought about previously as symbolic of Nazism, as representing rage-filled children’s tantrums, or even as resembling BBC cameras from the 1960s.
