Delighting in VINCENTIAN STUDIES INSTITUTE undergraduates’ idealism and their discovery of complexity. Inhabiting qui- VOL. XXVIII, NO. 2 et corners for study, or contemplation of art, or music, or theatre. Attempting to honor in practice the privilege and improvisation of good teaching. Even engaging in passionate disagreements, wherein the only recognized hierar- chy is that of a compelling idea. There is a bit of pretension, to be sure, and conversation is sometimes sacrificed to more immediately satisfying ideological grandstanding, but even these moments are occasion for quiet smiles and recognition of a shared humanity. At the end of the day, I know of no corner of our good earth that is more fertile with possibility. Ideas take shape and then spread, influence and sometimes even undermine the society around them. New generations meet the thinking of generations long before them, worlds wildly different than their own. The disciplined observation of scholars and the sheer am- bition of their projects are open-handedly shared with academic colleagues throughout the world. Students are brought into this life of love — for there is no other word for it. One cannot study the world or dedicate one’s life to educating the next generation without love. At a Vincentian university there is an additional, particularly lovely, idealism rooted in the care of two seventeenth-century saints for the poor around them. Vincent de Paul and his life-long collaborator Louise de Marillac brought people together, both informally and organizationally, so that the poor would be assisted. The simplicity of their purpose met with the still extraordinary ingenuity and complexity of their response. The legal, political, social, eccle- sial, and economic forces all had to be understood, engaged, and ultimately managed so that the work could succeed. Thousands of letters remain from both founders, coordinating their works and collaborators, raising money, 10 11 filing and fighting law suits, begging the wealthy, employing the royal court, effective if they engage the current economic and political systems. Nicoletti I’m picking up once more with my series on Second Corinthians tonight. I preached from Hebrews back in March and so it’s been seven months since we last looked at 2 Corinthians. We are up to chapter 10, verses 12-18 tonight. To remind you of what’s going on, at the beginning of chapter 10 there’s a significant shift in tone. Commentator Paul Barnett puts it like this – he says: “It appears that, as the letter draws to its conclusion, Paul’s appeal to the Corinthians becomes more intense emotionally. Like many an orator (and preacher!), he has kept the most urgent and controversial matters until the end and dealt with them passionately so that his last words make their greatest impact on the Corinthians.” [Barnett, 452] The Apostle Paul begins chapter ten by directly confronting some of the accusations his opponents have made against him. We looked at that back in March. Then, in verse 12, he shifts from responding to direct accusations, to highlighting an important difference between him and his opponents. We’ll begin there now – 2 Corinthians 10:12-18. The Apostle Paul writes: 12 Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding. 13 But we will not boast beyond limits, but will boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, to reach even to you.

Rivista digitale di Pedagogia e Didattica della musica, pp. 91-103 NICOLA BADOLATO - ANNA SCALFARO Bologna MUSIC EDUCATION IN ITALIAN SCHOOLS FROM THE UNIFICATION TO TODAY This paper reviews the main stages in the history of Music Education in Italian schools from the country’s unification to today, providing a critical, reasoned discussion of some of the key themes in ministerial programmes, from 1860 to today. This reconstruction does not make any claim to provide a definitive systematization of, or even only exhaust, such a vast subject in the limited space of an article. More realistically, it aims at showing how both the technically-oriented idea of teaching that was typical of programmes in the first half of the 20 th century, and the lucid-evasive vision that emerged from the “protest” climate of the 1960s and 1970s, have impeded a serious, effective organization of the epistemological status of the discipline, an issue which remains unresolved as of today. 1. 1860 to 1923 The first set of rules produced in a united Italy was introduced by Legge Casati, passed by Royal Decree of the Kingdom of Sardinia on November 13 th , 1859 (no. 3725) and later extended to the Kingdom of Italy. The scope of school programmes is clearly defined by article 315, which lists first of all «religious teaching, reading, writing, basic arithmetic, the Italian language, and the rudiments of the metric system».1 There are no traces of music culture or music practice in the programmes: although they show a markedly cultural approach – less so in female schools, where teaching is reduced and simplified –, they reduce music education to its technical-performing aspects, thereby confining it exclusively to the academies, musical institutions and conservatories disseminated all over the territory.

We were ruled by our passions, fears and fed by stories passed on from our ancestors about life. There was something about our lives, that made us reach for the unknown God. We knew love in the children born to us and sorrow that we experienced in the death of those we loved. But we also sorrowed for others that we did not love, but through our kinship through friends and their family members, we also wept at the death of others. This was a spiritual upheaval within us that somehow made us think outside of ourselves. This need to love and to be loved and to sorrow at the death of family and friends was deep rooted in us. We buried our dead and put up sticks or rocks to mark where they were buried. We told stories about our ancestors as a reminder and as a living memorial within our hearts as to their lives and their passing. These stories were told with respect and love. We still do this today throughout the world. This thread of spiritual realization is a sign that we are all connected somehow. We remember our friends and loved ones on the 2 anniversary of their deaths.

RYBOLT, C.M. (A conference prepared for the participants in CIF, Centre International de Formation, held in Paris, France; revised and updated.) INTRODUCTION The purpose of this week of the program is to be faithful to paragraph 50 of the Constitutions, which instructs us about our Vincentian Family. 50. We should cherish devotion to Saint Vincent and to the canonized and beatified members of the Vincentian Family. We should constantly return to the heritage of our Founder, expressed in his writings and in the tradition of the Congregation, that we may learn to love what he loved and practice what he taught. As you can see, we are really interested in just the first sentence of this paragraph. Nevertheless it tells us a great deal. We could approach this subject hagiographically: that is, in the worst sense of the term, to look at these saints and blesseds as the models of every Vincentian virtue, searching their lives for examples of these, marveling at them, and drawing out lesson for our personal daily living. You are certainly free to do so, and during these hours together, I will display several items of interest which could be read, as well as a bibliography. On the other hand, I am going to approach the subject historically, particularly by giving the historical context in which these confreres of ours lived and worked.
