Bonding Images: Photography and Film as Acts of Perpetration Christophe Busch Kazerne Dossin: Memorial, Museum and Research Center Mechelen, Belgium “Schöne Zeiten” On December 2, 1959, SS-Untersturmführer (second lieutenant) Kurt Franz was arrested at his home in Düsseldorf. As a former cook, he joined the Waffen-SS in 1937 (Third SS-Totenkopfstandarte Thuringia) and worked at the Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar. At the start of the Second World War, he was summoned to the Führer’s chancellery and was asked to serve as kitchen chief at Grafeneck, Hartheim, Brandenburg and Sonnenstein. At these psychiatric institutions, the T4 euthanasia program, which included the killing of psychiatrically ill people in Germany and Austria, was executed.
