Asslamualaikum ,

We worked very hard this term on researching and writing our article about our favourite role models, whom we wish to be like, our exciting hobbies and other fun and games.

We divided ourselves into editors, subeditors and feature writers and chose our own topics and met up three times in the terms as well as researching at home.

We had lots of fun winning prizes and sweets as well as work- ing in teams.

In the club we also did grammar boosting sessions such as making a punctuation bunny, doing grammar walks, and competing in grammar quizzes to help us excel with our writ- ing. We hope you enjoy!

4 Amazing Aisha Siddiqa, RA

Who was Aisha RA?

Aisha RA was married to the prophet SAW at a very young age. She was the daughter of Abu Bakr RA who was a very close friend to the prophet. Aisha RAs marriage to the prophet brought Abu Bakr and the prophet closer together.

Aisha learned to read and write although this was very rare in the people at that time. She narrated 2210 Ahadith of the prophet.

Eighteen Aayah of the Quran was revealed in her honour. This is in Surah Nur. Why is Aisha RA my role model?

Aisha RA is my role model because she was intelligent and learnt many Surah`s at a very young age. In addition, she was one of the prophets very much loved blessed wives.

Aisha RA always stood up for the truth no matter what, she was courageous and brave and would even bring water to the soldiers on the battlefield.

Aisha RA was childless nevertheless she cared for the or- phans. She was also very pious and generous. She had the ability to read and write. What an amazing role model! By Aqsa Chaudhry

5 UTHMAN IBN AFFAN: THE KIND-HEARTED CALIPH

Who is Uthman Bin Afwan? Uthman Ibn Affan (RA) became Muslim at the hands of his friend Abu Bakr (RA). He went on to marry two of the Prophet (SAW’s) daughters, Ruqqayah and Umm Kulthum. Because of this he was known as Dhun Nurayn.

What were the amazing characteristic of Uthman R.A? He was one of the most generous Companions of the Prophet (SAW). Even though he was very rich, he loved to share his wealth by helping the poor. For example, when the Muslims were travelling in the blazing heat of Arabia they grew thirsty. A man who owned the well charged a lot of money to buy water from the well, so a lot of people could not afford to buy the water. So Uthman bought the well from the man for a large sum of money and let the people take water for free! Even to this day, there is a piece of land bought by Uthman (RA) in Madinah which earns sadaqah for the poor. Why do I love and want to emulate Uthman R.A? It was because of this kind-heartedness that people then and today, love and admire him so much.

Who was Khadija?

Khadijah (ra) was the best woman of her time. She is one of the four women who will go to Jannah. Additionally, she was the first person to accept Islam .

What was Khadija’s life like before she met the Prophet p.b.u.h?

Before Islam came she was known as Al-Tahira the pure woman. She was the daughter of two very knowledgeable people and she was very rich. Her first marriage was to a great Quraysh leader but she became a widow. She then married Mohammad (saw) as she saw how he had excellent shaksiya ; Khadija (ra) was happily married to Muhammad (saw) and they never fought. What a wonderful example for us?

How did Khadija support the Prophet p.b.u.h?

Khadija (ra) supported the Prophet (saw) and Islam in many different ways. She would reas- sure him with her words, by relaying to him that Allah is never going to disgrace him. She provided him with constant reassurance and always comforted him. She also took him to her cousin Wararka who was very learned, soon after he received the first revelation at the Cave of Hira.

Furthermore, she always reassured him that Allah would grant him victory. The generous Khadija (ra) gave all her money for the sake of Allah even though she could have lived like a queen.

Why does Khadija have the title mother of the believers?

One of the toughest times she faced with the Prophet (saw) and the other Muslims was en- during the years of the boycott. During the last year of the boycott Khadija (ra) passed away at the age of 55 years old. Mohammad (saw) said the best thing Allah gave him was Khadija as she had been a wise, loyal and loving wife.

7 The Courageous Khalid Bin Walid

Who is my greatest role model? It is no other then the famous sahaba..Khalid Ibn Walid also the most courageous sahaba. Why is this sahaba so respected? He fought in many battles. Additionally, he was known for his military tactics. He fought for the Muslims. Fur- ther to this, he was victorious in over a hundred battles and descended from the tribe of the Quraysh. Was he really courageous? Khalid Ibn Walid fought so hard that he needed nine swords to battle with. He converted to Islam after the treaty of Hudaybiyyah and ruled six years of service. He defeated the Sassanid Persian forces during the con- quest of Iraq. A very brave sahaba indeed!

Choosing my role model

Before deciding who my role model was going to be, I wanted to take a few moments to ponder. I wanted to choose someone who if I copied then I would get reward. It is some- one who I love dearly and deeply for their Shakhsiyyah Islamiyah. I have chosen someone who was a humble and very respected person of his town. Folk in his town knew him to be unique as trustworthy. I want to be trustworthy and honest just like him. His relatives, friends and family and all who ever had the chance to meet him said he had a glow on his face. I heard my mum call this “Noor” on his face due to his taqwa being so amazing in- side. I think there are not too many who have this glow but I want to have this glow too as I know that it does not matter how I dress or what I look like but my inside taqwa is what Allah swt will see Insha’Allah. You might be wondering who my Role Model is…. It is my Grandfather… My “Naana”.

How should we select a role model?

The reason we choose someone to be a role model is because we want to copy their good actions. Not only did he have a good character but I remember a nice anecdote that my big sister Hafsah passed down in my memory bank. Let me share it with you :) as I am sure you will be inspired too about how we should be kind to all. Well one day my sister was 4 years old and she was very scared as a stray cat came into my Naanas home. My sister saw its teeth and froze with fear. So my Naana just clapped three times to coax the cat back into the garden, he didn't shout or hurt it’s feelings all. My sister bear hugged my Naana so hard and wouldn’t let go. He picked her up and smiled and since that day he became my sisters ‘hero’ who ‘rescued’ her from the ‘scary cat’: My sister is a big teen- ager now 15 years old and she still writes about him in school to this day.

My Nanna: the sabiroon When I was a baby my Naana was ill in hospital with Cancer; he hardly any strength to even pick up a spoon to eat his favourite dessert of raspberry cake and custard. What I find amazing was that he managed to pick me up and cradle me sub- hanAllah even though he could not lift up a piece of cake! My dad says that my Naana gave me the amount of love that he might have given me all his life in just a few moments on that day. I hope he will be in the highest part of Jannah with any cake he likes.

Lastly; a role model with immense sabar was my Naana. Having cancer can give you ex- cruciating pain. Guess what my nana did when he felt pain? He didn't moan for paraceta- mol he just said “ Allahuakbar” . These words he would say a lot – Allah is the Greatest. I pray that I can be courageous and have such sabr. My Naana wanted me to be his sad- daqa jaariyah. I hope I can be a role model like him one day inshaAllah. 10 Our Eclectic and Exciting hobbies

11 The Excellence of Electricity

What is Electricity?

An Electric charge that does not move is called static ELECTRICITY. A charge may flow in a current providing there is an unbroken loop or circuit. n my experiments, when I make a circuit and I undo one wire the electricity flow is broken and the electric will not flow.

How does Electricity flow?

An ELECTRIC current only flows through a good conductor such as copper or any material that can charge well.

Another good conductor that I tried in my experiments is foil. I think foil works well be- cause it has similar properties like metal; it is shiny and soft. I also notice in my experi- ments that a screw was a good conductor.

When does a current flow?

A current only flows if there is a driving force to push the charge. This force is called an ELECTROMOTIVE FORCE or emf.

What is EMF?

The emf is created by a battery or a generator.

I also found an economical way to push the charge which is by using solar panels instead of a battery in my electronic experiments.

So now you know the basics of electricity what are you waiting for: go and conduct some electronic experiments!

Enjoy a wide range of fun electricity facts for kids. Electricity plays an important role in everyday life, learn more about static electricity, electric eels, circuits, lightning, electric shock, volts, amps and much more.

 Electric current is measured in amperes (amps).

 Electric potential energy is measured in volts.

 Two positive charges repel each other, as do two negative charges. Opposite charges on the other hand attract each other.

 When an electric charge builds up on the surface of an object it creates static electricity. You have probably experienced static electricity in the form of a small electric shock, which is what happens when the electric charge is quickly neutralized by an opposite charge.

 Electric eels can produce strong electric shocks of around 500 volts for both self defense and hunting.

 Electric circuits can contain parts such as switches, transformers, resistors and transformers.

 A common way to produce electricity is by hydropower, a process that gener- ates electricity by using water to spin turbines attached to generators.

What is the difference between a ocean and a sea?

Ocean and sea are two words that are used frequently and interchangeably (: a continuous mass of seawater on the earth’s surface. An ocean is a large expanse of salt water that covers three-quarters of the earth’s surface. It is bounded by the continents, or the equator, and other imaginary lines. The Earth’s seven main oceans are; the Arctic, North Atlantic, South Atlantic, North Pacific, South Pacific, Indian and Antarctic Oceans. Sea on the other hand, is a body of salt water that is surrounded by land on all or most sides, or that is part of one of the oceans. That is the difference. Why are oceans and seas important?

After years and years of river inflow and evaporation, the salt content of the lake water built up to the present levels. The same process made the seas salty. Rivers carry dis- solved salts to the ocean. Water evaporates from the oceans to fall again as rain and to feed the rivers, but the salts remain in the ocean. Subhannallah!

How do oceans and seas form?

The water on Earth stayed in gaseous form until the planet's surface cooled below 100 degrees Celsius. At this time, 3.8 billion years ago, water condensed into rain and poured onto the land. Water collected in low lying areas which gradually became the primitive oceans. So there is so much more to the sea then you can see!

The life of the enormous fish

What do you know about fish?

Fishes are wonderful creation of Allah SWA and are vertebrate animals that live in the water. Vertebrate means they have a spinal cord surrounded by bone or cartilage. They have gills that extract oxygen from the water around them.

Additionally, Fish are covered in scales which are often covered in a layer of slime to help their movement through water. There are over 3,000 species of fish and 1000 of them are threatened with extinction. Some flat fish use camouflage to hide themselves on the ocean floor.

How do they survive?

There are so many fish some of them eat stones and some eat others, some even eat their brothers and sisters like sharks and sword fish.

Why is eating fish important?

It is important to eat fish because it gives you vitamin and brain fish. Some fish even give you vitamin D and C. Fishes’s oil is very good for our body. Therefore, fish are also very nutri- tious for our body.

15 The Excitement of Reading

What is reading?

Reading is the key to knowledge and knowledge is the ultimate weapon against ignorance. It is not a straightforward process of lift- ing the words off the page. More importantly, everyone has to learn to read because they can learn amazing things. Many people think of reading as a skill that is taught once and for all in the first few years of school . It is a life long process which nourishes your mind and develops your thinking. Why is reading important?

Reading is important because you can learn from it, for example: you read a non- fiction Muslim book and you learn a hadith by heart, you could tell other people the hadith and they could spread it and soon lots of Muslims will know it and you will get sadaqah jaria. It will educate you like Salahuddin ( and soon you will get into the habit of it. It is also helps enhances our writing skills. When and where you can read?

It is so simple , you can read anywhere anytime. You can read to your brother and sister at home or outside. All you need to do is take a book with you. So what are you waiting for? By Aleena (Year 5)

When did we discover Pluto?

When it was discovered in 1930, Pluto became the ninth but it was by far the smallest. Where is Pluto?

Pluto is further out than the main planets, orbiting be- tween 4437 and 7376 million km from the sun. How big is Pluto? Pluto is a tiny ball of rock covered by ice with fro- zen methane at the surface Isn’t Pluto amazing? Now go on and investigate planets and find your favourite!

17 Book Review: The Case of the Stolen Sparklers, by Anthony Read

The case of the Stolen Sparklers is a thrilling mystery. It is based in the 1800s when chimney sweeps, street children and the famous detective, Sherlock Holmes existed. In fact the book’s main characters, ‘The Baker Street Boys’ are featured in the original stories of Sher- lock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. However they are only background characters in Doyle’s books, whilst Sherlock is a background character in this one.

The story is fast-paced and within a page the reader is thrown into the mystery .It all starts when Polly the skivvy /maid is wrongly accused and framed for stealing Lady Mountjoy’s ti- ara (worth a lot of money) and other priceless diamonds. After she flees the house and is in hot pursuit by the police, Polly runs into Arnold Wiggins and Gertie who are two out of the seven Baker street boys.

They take Polly to their headquarters where she meets Shiner, Sparrow, Beaver, Queenie and Rosie. There they talk over the theft and promise to help Polly find the real culprit. Wig- gins (the leader of the Baker street boys) tells Queenie to go and ask if she could be a skivvy in replacement of Polly. From there Queenie is going to be Wiggins eyes in the house. In the morning Queenie would pass a message through the railings to Wiggins about the events she heard and saw.

The author cleverly recreates London of the nineteenth century through the use of charac- ters’ tone and speech in the story. The young detectives speak in a cockney English while the upper class speak proper English. The characters seem to remind me of familiar people as the author presents them with real-life personalities.

The characters are wonderfully different; Beaver is talkative, Sparrow is funny, Wiggins is intelligent and Gertie, who would desperately like to be one of the boys, is daring. In the story there are four prominent female characters which would make the book appeal to girls as well.

The mystery was unpredictable, the author has the reader guessing all the way through who the criminal was. There are several characters who could have easily been the thief as they each had their own motive

This book is for readers aged 8-12 years. I strongly recommend people to read this book as it is full of fiendish plans and criminals. It is a thrilling story for both boys and girls and it was really enjoyable.
