Van Leemputten, Candle procession, Montaigu (Belgium), 1903; Antwerp, Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten] BEYOND THE FEMINIZATION THESIS: GENDERING THE HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY IN THE NINETEENTH AND TWENTIETH CENTURIES PATRICK PASTURE he origin of this book lies in a collective research project aimed at developing a gender perspective on socio-religious history. The project focused on Belgium, Ta country that was relatively understudied - although an extensive literature exists on the social and political aspects of Christendom in Belgium, gender was (and arguably still is) hardly used as a research perspective1 - but particularly interest- ing because of the dominant position of Catholicism and the country’s geographical position between Germany and France. At the time, the project was conceived in the perspective of the ‘feminization thesis’ that seemed to be becoming an alternative master narrative replacing secularization - a concept that was increasingly aban- doned by historians and sociologists of religion alike (it has returned to some degree since).2 However, it raised some critical issues, in particular with regard to men and masculinity, the importance of the denominational context, and chronology. It appeared that the concept as we knew it from studies on American Protestantism could not that easily be applied to Europe, and particularly not in Belgium, and that a * This text bears influence of discussions with the participants in the projectIn search of the good Catholic m/f. This volume revisits the feminization thesis in the light of the results of the project and other recent research on Europe.3 It will discuss the validity of the feminization thesis through a series of case studies mainly relating to Western Europe in the nineteenth and especially twentieth century, and will conclude that while the concept has no doubt made an important contribution to contemporary research on the functioning of religion in society and has fundamentally altered our ways of looking at this past, it is time to move beyond it. Not only is the concept used with different meanings, more specifically it entails a huge risk of failing to properly historicize gender stereotypes and, by doing so, of actually confirming them. Still, it is useful to remember the context in which the concept was developed and to point out some results it has generated, without losing sight of the criticisms that were expressed in earlier studies. This will be done in the first paragraph of this introductionary chapter. Afterwards it will become easier to develop a more sophisticated historical approach that historicizes and problemizes gendered identities and practices, with more attention for ambiguities than for clear- cut differences. This will be also the logic of the order followed to subdivide this book, along with the more obvious chronological order of the subsequent chapters. THE ORIGINAL FORMULATIONS OF THE FEMINIZATION THESIS In 1974 Barbara Welter published a seminal article on religion in North America, in which she not only argued that “the Christianization [my emphasis] of the West, indeed the domesticating of the West, was probably the most important religious, cultural, and political event of the nineteenth century”, but also that Christianity profoundly changed, in its theology, institutions, and membership: it had become, in her words, “more domesticated, more soft and accommodating - in a word, more ‘feminine’”.4 A few years later Ann Douglas in her equally seminal The Feminiza- tion of American Culture confirmed and generalized Welter’s conclusions, describing Victorian America as a “perpetual Mother’s Day”.5 Indeed, while American public life secularized and industrial capitalism triumphed, a romantic and anti-intellectual counterculture developed which cherished domesticity and sentimentalism while 3 This project also resulted in two PhD dissertations (Buerman, Katholieke mannelijkheden and Van Osselaer, The Pious Sex, publication in this series forthcoming), and another collective volume Van Osselaer and Pasture et al., eds, Households of Faith, which will be published in this series in 2012. In many ways, Douglas asserts, this was exactly the opposite of the dominant culture: [Sentimentalism] asserts that the values a society’s activity denies are precise- ly the ones it cherishes; it attempts to deal with the phenomenon of cultural bifurcation by the manipulation of nostalgia. Sentimentalism provides a way to protest a power to which one has already in part capitulated. […] Many nine- teenth-century Americans in the Northeast acted every day as if they believed that economic expansion, urbanization, and industrialization represented the greatest good. It is to their credit that they indirectly acknowledged that the pursuit of these ‘masculine’ goals meant damaging, perhaps losing, another good, one increasingly included under the ‘feminine’ ideal (p. 12).     1 The role of subsidies in seventeenth-century French foreign relations and their European context Anuschka Tischer The focus of this chapter is on the notion and practice of subsidies in French politics and diplomacy in the seventeenth century. It begins, however, with some general observations on the subject concerning the notion and practice of subsidies to demonstrate what I see as the desiderata, relevant issues, and methodological problems. I then continue with a short overview of the French practice of subsidies in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and finally present some examples of how the notion and practice were used and described in relation to French diplomacy at the Congress of Westphalia. General observations As was pointed out in the Introduction, subsidies are one of those political notions and practices common in the early modern period that are yet to be systematically researched. The methodological problem can be compared to the notion and practice of protection, which has also only recently been put on the scholarly agenda.1 The comparison is useful as protection and subsidies have several common features and are, in fact, entangled in their use in the early modern international system. Its urban model was directly inspired by the town of Louvain with its mix of land uses, in contrast to the functionalist approach in which different land uses are kept separate. Uncertainty about future growth led to a linear form of development along a pedestrian spine and a string of small squares, to priority being given to access by public transport - thanks to the national railways’ investment in a new sub-surface station - and to the collection of storm water into a reservoir, treated as a lake. The pedestrian spine has been the backbone for the development of compact neighbourhoods on each sides and of a shopping mall directly linked to the railway station.This contribution endeavours to show how these initial aims have been pursued over almost half a century and what are the present perspectives.     1 UKRAINIAN INTEGRAL NATIONALISM AND THE GREEK-CATHOLIC CHURCH IN THE 1920-30S Oleksandr Zaitsev, Ukrainian Catholic University (Lviv) In 1934, after a series of terrorist attacks carried out by the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) in Galicia, the head of the Greek-Catholic Church (GCC), Metropolitan Andrei Sheptyts’kyi, issued a pastoral letter which sharply condemned “the criminal deeds of Ukrainian terrorists”.1 It was the highest point in the conflict between the Greek- Catholic Church and the revolutionary Nationalist movement.2 Why did the conflict arise? The most obvious answer is: because the Church could not condone violence and murder. But this is only part of the truth. Although there are numerous studies on the history of radical Ukrainian Nationalism and the GCC, the ‘uncomfortable’ aspects of their relations still await special research. In full accordance with Ernest Renan’s famous aphorism, 3 nationalist historians directly resorted to selective emphasis or ‘forgetting’ of historical events: they preferred to write about how the Church supported the struggle for liberation and about the clergy participation in the Nationalist movement, but quite understandably avoided discussing the conflict between the OUN and the Church. 4 In the depiction of Soviet historians, “the criminal activities of Ukrainian bourgeois nationalists always found support on the part of the Uniate Church,” whose head, “the Trojan horse of Vatican” count Sheptyts’kyi, was the nationalists’ spiritual father.5 No conflicts between the ‘father’ and the ‘children’ were mentioned. In other words, to be— or rather, to become—a man means to be “religious.” —Mircea Eliade, A History of Religious Ideas o appreciate the radical impact women’s studies has had on the discipline Tof history of religions, it is necessary first to describe briefly how the his- tory of religions understands its task. The history of religions, which claims to be the objective, scientific study of religion, sets as its task nothing less than the study, in historical and cross- cultural perspective, of all human religious phenomena. It includes in its pur- view, not only sophisticated, literate, philosophical, and theological materials, but also popular expressions of human religiosity such as festivals, life cycle rituals, myths, and practices that are found only in oral traditions. The history of religions seeks to avoid an approach to human religiosity that privileges cer- tain materials as “higher” and others as “lower.” It assumes that all expres- sions of human religiosity are worthy of study. In the words of Mircea Eliade: “For the historian of religions, every manifestation of the sacred is important: every rite, every myth, every belief or divine figure reflects the experience of the sacred and hence implies the notions of being, of meaning, and of truth.”1 History of religions does not seek to evaluate one religion (or religious expression) vis-à-vis another with a view to declaring one superior to the other.

    A Jurisprudence of "Coming Out": Religion, Homosexuality, and Collisions of Liberty and Equality in American Public Law William N. Eskridge, Jr.! Conflicts among religious and ethnic groups have scored American cultural and political history. Some of these conflicts have involved campaigns of suppression against deviant religious and minority ethnic groups by the mainstream. Although the law has most often been deployed as an instrument of suppression, there is now a public law consensus to preserve and protect the autonomy of religious and ethnic subcultures, as well as the ability of their members to self-identify without penalty. One thesis of this Essay is that this vaunted public law consensus should be extended to sexual orientation minorities as well. Like religion, sexual orientation marks both personal identity and social divisions.' In this century, in fact, sexual orientation has steadily been replacing religion as the identity characteristic that is both physically invisible and morally polarizing. In 1900, one's group identity was largely defined by one's ethnicity, social class, sex, and religion. The norm was Anglo-Saxon, middle-class, male, and Protestant. The Jew, Roman Catholic, or Jehovah's Witness was considered deviant and was subject to social, economic, and political discrimination. In 2000, one's group identity will be largely defined by one's race, income, sex, and sexual orientation. The norm will be white, middle-income, male, and heterosexual. Ibita Introduction My heartfelt thanks to the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies (FTRS) of the KU Leuven for the invitation to give this lecture from the part of the Research Unit Biblical Studies (RUBS) on the occasion of the golden jubilee of the International Programmes in English.1 My gratitude also to the Ateneo de Manila University for the research leave grant to prepare for this lecture and its publication. While my initial excitement in drafting this piece was almost dampened by the enor- mity of the task to reflect on the future of biblical studies, it was replaced by a deep gratitude for the contributions of the KU Leuven to my own personal, academic and professional formation. Within the limited time and space, I apologize for any oversight as I paint in broad strokes the unique contributions and influences of our research unit to the greater field of global biblical studies, the current challenges for biblical research, and the possible trajectories for biblical criticism, with Psalm 109 as a test case as it talks about an ‘unsilent’ mouth (109:1), evil mouths (109:2), and praising mouth (109:30). The mouth here serves as a synecdoche, that is, with a generalizing and integrative function,2 for the whole person.
