We’re time travelers.” “The Detectorists,” Mackenzie Crook and Andrew Ellard, 2017 Dedicated to Uncle Pete (17 February 1928 – 13 August 2015) Preface In 2016 I received nine boxes of materials concerning the lives of the Kleck family from the mid- 19th century to the 1980s. It included documents, photographs, letters, both typed and handwritten, notebooks, cancelled checks, wills, and many other Kleck-related items. All of the materials had been accumulated by my uncle, Pete Kleck, for many years. In 2014, Pete called me and asked if I would take the materials and I told him I would. Less than a year later, in October 2015, Pete died. His son, Wayne, his widow, Patricia, and I had agreed that at some point the “Kleck Archives” would be forwarded to me for inspection, restoration as needed, suitable retention and organized for the Kleck family. Wayne, Patricia and I all appreciated Pete’s interest in preserving the story of the Klecks through the materials in those nine boxes. Wayne was diligent in his preparation of the materials for shipment and they were successfully transported halfway across the country. Since then I have been trying to identify, preserve and digitize the materials, with a definite priority given to older and more important documents and pictures. In most cases the items required interpretation and further research.

Two Germanies, 1961-1989 Europe as Homeland (retrospective account, 2004) During his chancellorship (1982-1998), Helmut Kohl was known as both a champion of European integration and a loyal native son of Rhineland-Palatinate. As he explains below, he never regarded these two sides of his personality as contradictory but rather always saw them as inextricably linked, for German history has always been part of European history. Homeland Europe What incredible winds rush past a person over the course of time, especially in a period of transition like the one I have lived through. When I was born on April 3, 1930, a Thursday, in the Ludwigshafen municipal hospital, General Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg was the incumbent Reich President and Heinrich Brüning was Reich Chancellor in the Weimar Republic. My home region, the Palatinate, had been occupied by the French since the end of the First World War. Not until that summer of 1930 did the occupation forces leave the region west of the Rhine. The Palatines are a curious folk. This has to do with their history. They know how to celebrate and have fun. God provided the Palatinate with an abundance of wine and sun. Like the grapevine that digs itself into the ground, the people there are deeply rooted in their homeland; they are well acquainted with their history and with the tales of the Romans, who brought wine to the area, of the Speyer Cathedral, where the German kings and emperors of the Middle Ages were laid to rest in eternal peace, and of the diets of Speyer and Worms.

Castles and Palaces on the Romantic Rhine Legendary! On the romantic Rhine, there is a castle landscape which is unique in its density and variety. Between Bingen and Rüdesheim in the south and the Siebengebirge (Seven Hills) in the north, mediaeval knights’ castles, pretty Baroque palaces and impressive fortiﬁ cations unite to make up a unique cultural landscape. The va- riety of the buildings from various epochs is impressive: in this respect, some castles served to levy customs and were therefore important income sources for those in power. Other buildings on the other hand were constructed as safeguards against neighbouring archbishoprics or electorates and yet others fulﬁ lled purely representative functions. How the scores of castles and palaces on the romantic Rhine appear today could also hardly be more varied. Some of them have remained preserved over the centuries through elaborate restoration and accommodate restaurants, hotels or museums. Others radiate the mystic charm of (almost) crumbled ruins and one can only divine how many wars and revolts they have seen come and go. The count- less palaces, castles and ruins can be ideally experienced on foot, by bike or by ship on the Rhine and in the secondary valleys of the Rhine valley. The historical showpieces and weathered monuments are often linked by hiking paths.
