It had 13 stars on to do! hats for Derby Day! a blue background and 13 red and white stripes. The stars stood for heaven and all men’s goals, and 13 was the number of the original states. Blue is the color of the chief, red is the color of valor and bravery, and white is the color of purity. As the number of states increased over the years, a star was added for each additional state. The last change to the flag was made by President Eisenhower in August 1959 when he added the 50th star. The history of Flag Day began in 1885 when a Wisconsin schoolteacher named BJ Cigrand wanted his pupils to observe a special “flag birthday” on June 14th. He worked tirelessly throughout his life for the national adoption of this special day. The New York State Board of Education adopted June 14th as Flag Day in 1889. It is widely recognized to have officially begun in 1891, when the Betsy Ross House A little gardening always in Philadelphia held a Flag Day celebration. President Cornhole with Legacy makes us feel good! Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first official Flag Day in 1916, but it wasn’t until 1949 that President Harry Truman signed an act of Congress designating June 14th, National Flag Day. Despite it being officially recognized, it is not a mandated holiday and only Philadelphia has made it an official state holiday.

Piñata fun on Our puzzlers finally finished Cinco de Mayo this challenging project! Legends of the Summer Solstice It’s Litha (also known as ), the longest day of the year! The sun will shine more on Sunday, June 20th, than at any other point in 2021. The day is known as the Summer Solstice, or Midsummer Day, and is a celestial event brought about when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky and seems to just hang without moving. In fact, the word “solstice” is from the Latin word solstitium, which literally means, “sun stands still.” Agricultural societies around the world mark this as the high point of summer. European traditions celebrated this time of year by setting large wheels on fire and rolling them down a hill into a body of water. If the fire went out before the wheel hit the water, a good crop was guaranteed. Romans celebrated the time as sacred to Juno, the wife of Jupiter and goddess of women and childbirth. The month of June was named for her, and because Juno was the patroness of marriage, her month remains an ever- popular time for weddings. It’s also a time for brightness and warmth. The power of the sun at Midsummer is at its most potent, and the cultures celebrate this fact through the lighting of bonfires. In England, rural villagers would “set the watch” by building bonfires on Midsummer’s Eve to keep evil spirits out of the town. Some traditions claimed that fairies would come out and dance to the light of a Midsummer’s Eve bonfire...a legend that inspired Shakespeare’s comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Make this year’s solstice a day of inner power and brightness. Find a quiet spot and meditate on the light of your own life. Get outside, breath the air and experience the great outdoors. Alzheimer’s Awareness Month We can strengthen a healthy brain through participation in certain activities or we can diminish areas of the brain through lack of use. For example, if you learn and practice a foreign language, you most likely will become more fluent. However, if you quit using that language, your vocabulary may decrease. Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of the aging process. According to the Mayo Clinic, only about 5 percent of people between the ages of 65 and 74 have a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Nearly 50 percent of people over the age of eighty-five have Alzheimer’s disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, symptoms of declining brain skills include: 1. Memory loss: Evidenced by forgetting things and frequently repeating yourself. 2. Difficulties with abstract thinking/problem solving: Skills such as balancing a checkbook. 3. New problems in speaking, reading, and writing. 4. Loss of planning and safety awareness/judgment: Poor judgment with money. 5. Difficulty performing/sequencing once outiner tasks, such as cooking and laundry. 6. Mood/personality changes: Traits such as stubbornness, withdrawal, or agitation. 7. Confusion with time, place, or date. If you have memory or wellness related questions, please reach out to Legacy Healthcare Services at 610-419-4092, or stop by our office located on the third floor and exiting to the left of the main elevator.
