While the Zebras were bundled out of the fi nals in the fi rst week by the Box Hill Hawks, Sandringham should view its seasons as a step in the right direction. With new captain Marcus Marigliani fi t from the get-go it will enable the Zebras to have a greater presence from the start. Sandringham lost several players to neighboring club Frankston while Essendon snaffl ed emerging ruckman Michael Sikora and the Zebras were unable to lure any profi le players to Trevor Barker Oval. It is banking on the development on fi rst and second year players coupled with a sprinkling of ex-Sandringham Dragons and the considerable input of affi liate St Kilda to drive its season. There’s little reason why Sandringham can’t again be a fi nal’s contender, but its depth falls short in comparison to Port Melbourne, Williamstown, Werribee and North Ballarat.

“Brett’s leadership skills and his application to his football has been fi rst-class, and we are not only seeing the benefi ts on the fi eld, but he is providing valuable support to his younger teammates off it,” Fantasia said.

“We are extremely proud of how much he has developed as a person throughout his time here, and as a footballer over the past few months and I look forward to seeing him continue his good form this season.”
