  • Vern Schuppan
Vern Schuppan Born in Australia, Vern Schuppan won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1983 and was part of the Porsche works team until 1988. Full of hope and optimism, Vern Schuppan went to England in 1969 at the age of 26 to become a racing driver. In 1970, he visited the 1,000 kilometre race at Brands Hatch, where he admired the driving skills of Jo Siffert and Pedro Rodriguez in their Porsche 917. ‘Their performance in the rain was very impressive,’ noted Schuppan. ‘I wonder if I will ever drive a 917?’ In 1972, Schuppan joined John Wyer’s Gulf team, but he was already using the Mirage Ford at this point. It was not until 2012 that his great wish came true: as a 69-year-old racing veteran, Schuppan finally had the opportunity to drive a Porsche 917 at the Le Mans Classic. In the early years of his career, Schuppan competed in some Formula One races for smaller teams like BRM, Ensign, Embassy Hill and Surtees. In the United States, he came third in the Indianapolis 500 in 1981. In the same year, Porsche required him to race in Le Mans, where he took 12th place after some engine problems in the Porsche 936. Racing manager Peter Falk was looking for drivers ‘with brains’ for the new Group C and its fuel consumption regulations – men with a consistent and gentle style. Schuppan was one of those up for selection, and in 1982 he finished second at the side of Jochen Mass when the Porsche 956 made its debut at Le Mans.

The Orange Times Bruce McLaren Trust Sept, Oct, Nov 2017 Issue #19 BMT Heritage Centre Official Opening On August 30th, on what would have been Bruce’s 80th birthday, we were delighted to officially open our Heritage Centre. And what a crazy rush it was to get everything ready in time. Areas that weren’t quite ready, along with many unopened boxes, were carefully disguised or hidden away. Around 120 members, friends, sponsors, associates and volunteers, including our new Patron Greg Murphy, Waikato District Council Mayor Allan Sanson, and representatives from the Franklin Tourism Board were welcomed with champagne, canapes and warm hospitality. Our MC for the evening was John Tomlin and he did a wonderful job despite a sore throat and the usual last minute alterations to plans that every event planner knows only too well. Jan opened the evening with a story about the Waikato and the McLaren family connections to the area. Whilst we don’t usually associate Bruce with the area, the McLaren family farm was in Ngaruawahia and she recalled many a family trip from Remuera to the farm, with Bruce in the Austin Ulster and Pop McLaren driving in the V8 Pilot. She remembered too the Mercer fog, the Rangiriri Straight and Bruce, from the moment they left Remuera, way out in front. He was usually not seen again until the V8 Pilot got to the Rangiriri Straight and there would be Bruce just high-tailing over the brow of the hill at the far end, both drivers naturally obeying all the speed rules! The straight on SH1 that leads to Hampton Downs surely does know Bruce well, and might we add that some of the McLaren family still live on that very Ngaruawahia farm today.

  • Forgotten F1 Teams – Shadow Racing This Is the Third Episode of Forgotten F1 Teams – a Miniseries Brought to You by Sidepodcast
Forgotten F1 Teams – Shadow Racing This is the third episode of Forgotten F1 Teams – a miniseries brought to you by Sidepodcast. In these episodes we are looking at teams who aren’t racing anymore, but should be remembered, either for doing very well, or maybe floundering a little bit. Today, we’re looking at Shadow Racing. The company behind Shadow Racing was founded by Don Nichols, a mysterious man with an unknown background. He set up his base in America and called the company Advanced Vehicle Systems. They produced a car and called it Shadow, ready to race in the CanAm series. At the end of 1972, Nichols confirmed they would be making the step up to Formula One the next season, with major sponsorship from Universal Oil Products ‐ UOP. The team made their debut at the South African Grand Prix, with Jackie Oliver and George Follmer – two drivers brought along from the CanAm team. They also supplied a car to Graham Hill, who was racing under his own Embassy Hill brand. Results were mixed. Follmer had a great start to the season, on the podium at the team’s second race. Oliver struggled with retirements until the penultimate round, where he equalled Follmer’s third. 1974 was a difficult year for the team. Peter Revson and Jean‐Pierre Jarier were in the driving seats, but retired from the first two races. In practice for the next South Africa Grand Prix, Revson was killed when his car suffered suspension failure and crashed. The team withdrew from the weekend. After a couple of driver changes, Tom Pryce was drafted in to replace Revson.
