The objective of the current Diaconía-FRIF agreement is for UAC-CP students to provide technical assistance to their rural clients on measures to adapt to climate change. Fundación Sembrar Sartawi currently finances scholarships for UAC-CP students. Direct beneficiaries: - 900 young people (at least 50% women), aged 16 to 29, mainly from the rural communities of Los Yungas, La Paz1 will receive training on business management and entrepreneurship. Of these, 45% are currently studying degree programs at UAC-CP and 55% have either graduated in previous years or are not affiliated with UAC-CP. - Of the 900 young people, 500 (at least 50% women), aged 16 to 19, mainly from the rural communities of Los Yungas, La Paz, will start a business or strengthen an existing business. Four hundred of these businesses will be sustained for one year or more after being launched. - 1 rural university, located in the Carmen Pampa community of the Los Yungas region, department of La Paz, which currently has 700 students across five degree programs: agronomy, veterinary medicine, rural tourism, education, and nursing. It will have an education model focused on rural entrepreneurship. Indirect beneficiaries: - 3,600 indirect beneficiaries, four family members per direct beneficiary. - 200 general jobs through the businesses sustained for one year after being launched, not including the entrepreneur (one part-time job is estimated for each business: 400*0.5 = 200). Background 1.1 In recent years, Bolivia has made considerable gains on social development indicators: between 2005 and 2012, extreme poverty fell at the national level from 38.2% to 21.6%, and between 2001 and 2011, the average years of education of the population aged 19 or over increased from 7.43 to 9.13. However, there are still pronounced gaps between geographic areas: extreme poverty in urban areas is 12.2%, while in rural areas, it is 40.9%, and average years of education are 10.72 and 5.46 in urban areas and rural areas, respectively.2 These figures show that rural dwellers, 32.7% of the Bolivian population, face disadvantages relative to the urban population. 1.2 There are also significant differences in terms of income-generating opportunities and employment characteristics. In cities, there are numerous sectors as well as the possibility of self-employment or work as a salaried employee.3 However, in rural areas, 72% of the population works in agriculture and 6% in commerce; 70% is self-employed. 1.3 The current structure of the agricultural GDP,4 almost half of which stems from nonindustrial agricultural products, presents an opportunity for the boost to the sector to benefit not only the large producers, but also the small and medium- sized producers5—including young people. In this regard, boosting the agriculture sector and strengthening the entrepreneurial and business capacities of young people in rural areas has great potential to improve their living conditions and contribute to poverty reduction. According to the IDB, the growth generated by agricultural GDP in Latin America could be up to four times more effective in reducing poverty than the growth generated by other sectors, because of the high percentage of the population that still has ties to the land.6 1.4 Providing education in rural areas is a key element.     Amazon Alive! A decade of discovery 1999-2009 The Amazon is the planet’s largest rainforest and river basin. It supports countless thousands of species, as well as 30 million people. © Brent Stirton / Getty Images / WWF-UK © Brent Stirton / Getty Images The Amazon is the largest rainforest on Earth. It’s famed for its unrivalled biological diversity, with wildlife that includes jaguars, river dolphins, manatees, giant otters, capybaras, harpy eagles, anacondas and piranhas. The many unique habitats in this globally significant region conceal a wealth of hidden species, which scientists continue to discover at an incredible rate. Between 1999 and 2009, at least 1,200 new species of plants and vertebrates have been discovered in the Amazon biome (see page 6 for a map showing the extent of the region that this spans). The new species include 637 plants, 257 fish, 216 amphibians, 55 reptiles, 16 birds and 39 mammals. In addition, thousands of new invertebrate species have been uncovered. Owing to the sheer number of the latter, these are not covered in detail by this report. This report has tried to be comprehensive in its listing of new plants and vertebrates described from the Amazon biome in the last decade. But for the largest groups of life on Earth, such as invertebrates, such lists do not exist – so the number of new species presented here is no doubt an underestimate.     Government of Bolivia Bolivia Coca Cultivation Survey June 2007 Bolivia Coca Survey for 2006 PREFACE The evidence from the 2006 Bolivia Coca Survey sends mixed signals. Overall, there is an 8% increase in cultivation over 2005 for a total of 27,500 hectares. Dire forecasts have not been borne out. Nevertheless, there are warning signs that should be heeded. Under Bolivian law, 12,000 hectares may be grown for traditional consumption or other legal uses: this Survey shows that the limit was exceeded in the Yungas of La Paz where most of the cultivation usually takes place. At the same time there has been a dramatic (19%) increase in the Chapare region, including more than 2,300 hectares of coca being grown in national parks in the Tropics of Cochabamba – a threat to the precious eco-system of the Amazon forests. The good news from this same region is that the amount of land devoted to the cultivation of alternative crops – such as bananas, pineapple, and palm heart – now exceeds the area used to grow coca. There are signs of hope that licit crops can help liberate vulnerable communities from poverty. Nevertheless, the considerable increase in seizures and the displacement of drug production to areas outside the coca growing areas, as reported by the Bolivian drug control police, demonstrates the need for sustained drug law enforcement of the Bolivian Government. Bolivia’s drug policy is in the spotlight. The Government needs to reassure the world that its support for coca growers will not lead to an increase in cocaine production.

To move towards sustainable development, mixed waste should be reduced, and recyclable waste recovered. The aim of the current research was to find appropriate solutions to disposable used baby-diapers recycling in Bolivia since it is a waste fraction widely produced and commonly disposed of in open dumps. Composting of the organic diaper hydrogel was assessed in five trials, adding components available locally: cow dung, activated bacteria, and Californian red earthworms (Eisenia fetida). It was observed that about 60 days were globally required for biomass decomposition with cow dung, activated bacteria, and earthworms, and more than 70 days for the treatment of the substrate mixed only with manure, while the diaper hydrogel did not degrade without cow dung. This research is the first that attempted to treat disposable used baby diapers with the vermicomposting process. In general, the outcomes of the research are promising: vermicomposting with cow manure can be a recycling option for disposable used baby diapers, introducing appropriate practices toward a circular economy in developing regions.
