Elul Learning @ Drisha August - September 2021/5781 Background Image: The Russian State Library, Moscow, Russia Ms. Guenzburg 190 Overview of the Course v Three main forms of liturgical poetry that we encounter in Elul and during the High Holidays: o Part One (today!): Selichot o Part Two (9/2): The Piyyutim (and other ) of Rosh haShana o Part Three (9/9 [@ 9pm ET]): The Seder ha-Avodah of Outline of Today’s Class

o What is ? o Selichot • A Preliminary Description and the Genre’s Main Elements • The Origins and History of the Genre • Examples of Selichot for Elul and the Aseret Yimei Tshuva o [Time Permitting: Some other timely Selichot] What is Piyyut, Anyway? Pt. 1

o Liturgical poetry (usually in Hebrew) that serves to supplement the standard text, and even replace some of it. o From the Greek word ποιητής o Originated in the Land of , around the late 4th or early 5th century o Periods: • Pre-Classical: [” לא דא ו ן / לע לכ שעמה י ם “ ,” לע י נ ו חבשל / דאל ו ן כה ל “ ,.Anonymous; no rhyme; four-accent stress pattern [e.g § • Classical: § Exceedingly complex; signed by authors in acrostics; rhyme; more and more genres; different stress patterns § Perhaps the most famous payetanim are Yannai (6th c.)—the first to sign his name—and Elazar beRabbi Qillir (7th c.) • Late: § Different centers with different aesthetics: e.g., Italy and Ashkenaz (somewhat close to the Palestinian tradition); Babylonia and communities it directly influenced, like in North Africa and Spain; though, as we will see, all were eventually influenced by Babylonian practices

What is Piyyut, Anyway? Pt. 2 o : v Ma’ariv v Yotzer v Birkat ha-Mazon v Kerovah (eventually mislabeled as Kerovetz) o Kedushta—adoring the when the Kedusha recited; in the rite of the , this was far less common than it is today, and usually only during of and holidays o Shiv’ata—adoring the Amidah of Musaf, which usually has seven blessings, and would not originally have Kedusha o Especially complex ones on Rosh haShana, Yom Kippur, First day of Pesach (Tal), Shemini Atzeret () • Kina—originally inserted as part of the blessing Boneh Yerushalayim on the 9th of Av • SELICHA Selichot—A Preliminary Description

v When? o During Elul and the Aseret Yimei Tshuva, recited at night or in the morning (preferably between midnight and dawn) o On Yom Kippur o On Fast Days v Central Themes: o Man is nothing compared to God; Difficulty to pray given our nothingness and sins; our sins cause our suffering; regret for our actions; trust in God despite calamities; the efficacy of the 13 attributes of mercy; the merit of our ancestors, especially vis a vis the Binding of ; requests for atonement and redemption o Vs. Kinot—which more specifically mark historical events The Main Elements of Selichot in the Ashkenazi Rite

K Full Kaddish The 13 Attributes

“And the Lord passed by before him and proclaimed”— R. Yohanan said: Were it not written in the text, it would be impossible for us to say such a thing; this verse teaches us that the Holy One, blessed be He, drew his robe round Him like the shaliach tsibbur and showed the order of prayer. He said to him: Whenever Israel sin, let them carry out this service before Me, and I will forgive them. … Yehudah said: A covenant has been made with the thirteen attributes that they will not be turned away empty-handed, as it says, Behold I make a covenant. - b. Rosh Hashana 17b How Early are Selichot? v Significantly, Selichot are entirely absent from the works of the classical payetanim from the Land of Israel. o Instead, on some similar occasions we often find Kinot, in the blessing of “Boneh Yerushalayim.” v Yet, with that, many scholars, for a long time, considered the genre of Selichot to be very early, largely based on the style, which is similar to what we know of early piyyutim. Ø Shulamit Elizur (apropos Tova Be’eri): This is because the genre began in Babylonia, where the “early” aesthetic continued long after it fell out of fashion in the Land of Israel. The Siddurim of the “Selichot” The Siddurim of the Geonim

v Two relevant forms of liturgy appear in the Siddurim: o “Selichot”: • Piyyutim in the repetition of the Amidah on Yom Kippur—in the blessing of Kedushat haYom; • Piyyutim on Fast Days—in the blessing of “Selach Lanu.” • In between each piyyut the 13 attributes are recited. o “Ashmorot” or “Rachamin”: Long lists of verses and simple piyyutim, to be recited late at night or in the morning during the and eventually on other days as well Over time, these two forms of prayer impacted each other greatly and were no longer distinguishable. Additional Evidence from Geonic Sources

Rav Tzedek: It is the custom in the two to say Selichot and Tachanunim in the Ten Days of Repentance, and Rav Amram said: in the Ten Days of Repentance, one is to wake up early every day and got to the and the Shaliach Tsibbur starts with Ashrei and Kaddish and starts to recite Tachanunim and finishes with “Anachnu Lo Neidah” and Kaddish. And Rav Hai said, the custom is to recite Tachanunim over the course of these ten days… - Tur Orach Chaim, 581

Rav Hai said…On the two days of Rosh Hashana and on the Shabbat between Rosh Hashana it is the תpractice in the two yeshivas to say “divrei rachamim vi-tachanunim” from early morning until Shacharit and they fall on their faces after the tachanunim as they would during the week.” - Tshuvot ha-Geonim Mizrach u-Ma’ariv 122 Later Variety

v “Edot ha-Mizrach” o Begin after Elul o Generally a fixed set o North Africa—some communities retain different Selichot for different days, particularly Monday and Thursday v Italy o Begin Monday or Thursday before Rosh Hashana o Some communal diversity v Ashkenaz o Begin Saturday night before Rosh Hashana, so long as there are at least four days of Selichot o Huge diversity between communities, to the point that thirteen different Ashkenazic rites were printed

• Following the Holocaust, the diversity greatly diminished, and almost no community continues to recite Selichot in the context of the Amidah on days other than Yom Kippur • We’ll see also that there may be a general difference in content across rites Some Common Selichot (and some associated prayers) Ashkenaz Rite (Unknown, likely Ashkenaz 11th c.)
